I have reached end Jan 1944 and would like some advice re what I should be doing as not entirely clear from rules about some aspects.

In Italy I am up against a fortified German line North of Naples - no way through at least in Winter. I have 3 invasions planning for just south of Rome.

I assume these Amphibs then need to transfer to the UK asap or at least some of them. Cannot see I have enough for a South of France Invasion and a N Europe invasion and certainly don't have the troops so wonder where I am going wrong.

Some general pointers would greatly appreciated before I run myself into a losing cu-de-sac as it were.

Many thanks

To duplicate the historical Normandy invasions, you will require five or six TFs in the UK. They will need to be there by late February at the latest to get the best invasion prep time with two divisions by early to mid-May. That is about the earliest you can launch an invasion of northern France due to weather constraints. You could invade earlier, but the bad weather will play havoc with your logistics.

The fortified German line north of Naples is a hard nut to crack and it is best done the way you have planned - invade in force behind it and turn their flanks. Once you have gotten to Rome, the Italian front will not yield many more VPs without a large number of Casualty VPs lost in return trying to get into Northern Italy. The best way into Northern Italy is through Southern France. You will still have two TFs left in the MTO with the historic invasion level in northern France to do a shoestring invasion of southern France. You will get a lot of Free French troops in early 44 that you can task to that invasion.

You can also strip down the Allies in Italy once you get past Rome. Two armies will hold the Italian line which frees another army to reinforce the French in a southern France invasion. This is best done after the Northern France invasion as the Axis will pull out for more defense in the north. Note that sending the extra to the ETO does not help that much because it just makes a tight logistic situation even tighter. The best logistical help for the northern France invasion is a southern France invasion and getting Marseilles and Toulon sending supplies north by rail to help supply the southern flank of the invasion of Germany.

You are not doing bad. You are actually pretty typical at this time for your experience level. The Allies have a lot of possibilities but they also have a lot of limitations. The trick is to master both of those facts and come up with something that works for you.

Thank you! That is exactly the sort of steer I wanted at this stage of the campaign. Too easy to keep battering away in Italy rather than sit still and costing VP's.
