Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Allied #9. End of Turn.

This turn continues, however, the axis need it to end. The Germans because of their out of supply and disorganized units northwest of Naples and the Japanese because of their desire for no more naval action in the South China Sea.

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Axis #10. Actions.

In the hopes of ending this turn all three axis powers pass. The reality is that there isn't any moves that the axis need to make and therefore a pass doesn't hurt. Whether passing or not the axis badly want this turn to end.

Did the Germans ever recapture the hex east of Nice? If not, the French Lyons partisan can cut off German rail movement to Italy by moving one hex to the southeast. Not sure if you want to, but it is an idea. The Allies should make an attack on Milan. They are likely to flip, but I make it a 79% chance to take the hex (+6), excluding the effects of air. This would be a bad attack at the start of the turn, but near the end of the turn, it is a good one.

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Allied #9. USSR.

The Soviets are not looking at there own possibilities to make things difficult for Germany.

It's always better to let the enemy react on move you make, than to sit around and wait for the hammer to fall.

The German Stalingrad army is in grave danger, if the Allies get a double move. And you only have to invest one ARM (and a lousy one too) to make that happen! Move the 6-6 ARM east of Stalingrad around the German units. Now, the Germans must react by moving the 6-3 INF to the south. If they don't (or can't), that 6-6 ARM is going to race towards the south and join up with the 5-3 INF sitting around Krashnodar. And that means the end of all German advances into the Soviet Union, because there simply isn't a lot around which can stop the Soviets. Now, if you also move the 8-4 MOT out of Saratov 1 hex east, you can use that city to put two fast reinforcements in too...

You can make a very nice and large Stalingrad pocket...

Unfortunately I made my move before I read your post. I may have played the moves in the south a bit conservative. I wished I'd read it before my move though.

The hex east of Nice is still allied controlled, but I decided to keep the French partisan in Lyons. With respect to attacking Milan, I really wanted to but all I could get were three CW units (two corps + division). The hex southeast of Milan contain two disorganized US units. With 3 CW units the odds would have been +2.333 A, which I deemed to risky and so I didn't attack.

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Allied #11. USSR, Southern Front.

The Soviet High Command express their disappointment in not getting General Centuur's excellent strategic advice before dispatching orders to their subordinate commanders on the Southern Front. Comrade Stalin is most displeased with his High Command over this failure and is personally looking into the matter. Not good if you're one of his officers on the High Command.

The weather roll favors the allies because rain in the North Monsoon allows for air operations in the South China Sea.

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Allied #13. Actions.

With all powers nearly spend the Soviets at war take a rare combine in order to move ships into the Black Sea and ensure supply to a number of their land troops in south. While a combine at this stage of the turn seemed like a good thing to do it almost cost the Soviets a golden opportunity. Almost, that is.

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Allied #13. US Army Air Corps. Strategic Bombing. Marseilles, France.

I haven't kept track but my feel is that allied strategic bombing results are much worse when going after German targets in France than elsewhere. Could it be that the RAF and US Army Air Corps bomber crews have a soft spot for the French?

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Allied #13. Western Allies. Italy and the Allied Front.

No attacks, just shuffling of units about.

One thing that the allies had to be aware of was that there was a 9% chance of an Italian partisan appears. So zoc on all important hexes (e.g., Rome) was absolutely necessary. Even so, there were hexes with disorganized allied planes out of a zoc and vulnerable to partisans. This will need to be corrected if the allies get another move this turn, which is unlikely.

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Allied #13. Refusal of RP from Italy to Route Through Central Atlantic.

So, the situation is that the USA wanted to route a newly captured non-oil resource point in Italy through the Central Atlantic to the USA. However, though an unused CP was present in the Central Atlantic the Italian RP refused to go through the Central Atlantic instead insisting on going through the North Atlantic. No matter what USA convoy planners did, even if the Italian RP seemed to agree, it always resorted back to the route through the North Atlantic. The problem with this was the this blocked the BP from the USA to the Soviet Union because it needed that CP in the North Atlantic than the Italian BP kept stealing.jj

After a while USA convoy planners gave up and put two more CPs into the North Atlantic. While using up two idle CPs this late in the turn isn't a big deal, what is is that now the axis as the non-phasing player in the North Atlantic can try to initiate a naval combat if the USA wishes not to.

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Allied #13. USN. North Atlantic.

The USN indeed choose no combat in the North Atlantic. But as discussed in the previous post because the USA was "forced" to move additional CPs into the North Atlantic the axis as the non-phasing player was given the opportunity to try to initiate combat.

In the spirit of the game should I allow this? If MWiF had allowed the USA convoy planner to go through the Central Atlantic instead of forcing them through the North Atlantic then this would have not been possible. In the end, I half-halfheartedly allowed the axis to try to initiate combat. They failed. My reason for allowing the axis the opportunity was based on the fact that the game allowed it even through the game also force me to take a route through the North Atlantic even through I should have been able to go through the Central Atlantic.
