Totally tired of saying it, tournament after tournament, but we need Rooney to prove his worth now. We really don't wan't to face Wales with a defeat under our belts so.....

Mr Rooney, remember what you did vs Croatia in 2004 (yes 2004)? Well we need more of that.
C'mon England!

There's only one cure...3 points .

Mind you, if the thugs in Marseilles carry on as they are, we'll get kicked out anyway. The news clips seem to indicate this is truly organised mindless violence and some of the scenes are just sickening .

I'm really sorry about these mindless thugs, as for the last numerous years I have supported England in football tournaments because it's our league. (I'm a Cardiff City season ticket holder which has had its own problems....)

This time I can support Wales and we have won our first match. Any team with Ramsey and Bale in it has class. We could frighten England on Thursday.

But more importantly, why is it that there has been no issue at all with Welsh football supporters in France and all this with English? (And before you say anything, I know Cardiff City supporters have not bee saints over the years!)

I will support England tonight as well. But how has their hooliganism become a headline when terrorism was the previous one?

So far I intentionally have avoided watching it. I don't want to get out of my happy that the tournament has begun mode.

Oh well...

When I first made my predictions I bet on a draw (ENG vs RUS), but then stupidly changed my mind...

I did the opposite, went for a 2-1 England win first. But then I changed my mind and figured that England wouldn't be likely to break their run of not winning the opening game at a Euro tournament.

Well it feels like a defeat but at least, for once, we played really well and didn't stink the place out . As for the score and the prediction, I should know better than to be optimistic with England.....

England played well, but the Russian defense was formidable. For some reason no one mentions this. And even if I think that England deserved to win, interestingly enough they were able to pierce the Russian only with a free-kick, whereas the Russian scored a beautiful goal.

I lost 5 points with russian goal, but it's not too bad at all. Better England stay at 1 point.

Why should North Ireland get to have a better opening than England? Isn't it enough with Wales.

I just translated the Swedish word I would have used. And that didn't work.

So why should North Ireland be allowed to have a better first match than England?

Don't get me wrong, there is only one country I "support", but would love the Welsh and the Northern Irish (as fellow Britons (Welsh) or UK (Irish) to do well - and if England don't win it then they are the two nations I would like to see win it. Failing the British, and in the absence of the Dutch, then its Sweden and Hungary. Simples .

That last gasp goal from the Russians cost me dear in more ways than one. I am doing the McDonalds fantasy football and had both Dier and Rose in my team. That's a lot of points lost for a clean sheet

I know you do. More or less same with me. I was just trying to make a joke about the fact that many dislike when then neighbours team does well.

Not really - but its er....complicated . Let's make it easy and simply say that Mrs W's family are Irish which means my little warspites have Irish heritage - so yes, I don't mind if they do well, and when it comes down to it - like Spain vs Ireland in 2002 - I will be cheering on the Irish against most other nations. Yes. I think that covers it

[Russian] State News Service Vesti proudly announces that...

"Initial reports from Moscow claim attack by English hooligans provoked their ‘heroic’ countrymen into violence"

"heroic Russians fighting off hordes of English hooligans"

"Two hundred and fifty Russian fans repulsed an attack by several thousand English and forced them to flee"

Unfortunately, with the defenders available to England, a brain fart is always just around the corner. I knew I should have put money on a draw when the game went into half time at 0-0. 'twas ever thus.

Still, it was a pretty good performance all round. Except Raheem Sterling who was (IMO at least) toss.

I'd like all the UK nations to do well, it's a shame Scotland aren't there as well. None of them will get past the quarter finals though I think. If one of the British sides doesn't win then I wouldn't mind the Swiss doing it. No strong feelings on the Irish either way.

Liverpool must be laughing all the way to the bank.....

How much for that....toss? Yes, I agree, toss is about as good a word as any. Roy should have reacted to Lallana doing his usual too. Great first half but he really faded in the second. I think Kane is really feeling the effects of the season - Hodgson should give Vardy a chance next game and for goodness sake keep Alli in check. The Welsh will try and wind him up.....

Not sure how I forgot Lallana's 2nd half and why is Kane taking free kicks? Par for the course really, at least Jordan Henderson didn't get on the pitch.

Not sure Vardy should be a starter as he doesn't really fit with what England are trying to do, but against a tired defence he's a good option.

Well Leicester destroyed Swansea last season so its worth a go! Yeah Kane taking the corners was an interesting tactical development. Can you imagine Gerd Muller, Maradona, Messi or Kempes fulfilling that role? I mean its not like we didn't have other people that can cross a ball on the pitch?
