13 & 14 December 1941 Executive Summary

BB Oklahoma was scuttled. Not sure where is major effort is going to be at this point. I have had a idea/exact the location of the KB and Mini-KB all game. It looks like they are going to merge west of Johnston Island.... But to what purpose....

Raiding
Allied Ships
-----
AKL Princess of Cebu, Shell hits 2, heavy fires, heavy damage sinks
TK British Judge, Torpedo hits 1, heavy fires sinks
CM Prins van Oranje, Torpedo hits 1, heavy damage sinks
xAKL Princess of Cebu, Shell hits 2, heavy fires, heavy damage sinks
xAK Bantam, Torpedo hits 2, heavy fires, heavy damage sinks
xAP Kedah, Torpedo hits 5, heavy fires, heavy damage sinks

Japanese Ships
-----
SS I-156, hits 2
SS I-158, hits 1

Various ASW hits from the air near Pearl Harbor.

Allied Naval Forces
Fleet of Doom: USN CAR DIV 1 (Enterprise), USN CAR DIV 2 (Lexington) and USN CAR DIV 3 (Saratoga) are southeast of Christmas Island. Replenishment taffey also inbound.

KB and Mini-KB
===> KB appears to have replenished off northwest of Johnson island and is under active observation. Appears the KB will meet with the Mini-KB. They are up to something but what? He has to know he has been under observation for the last five days, is this simply to convince me not to reinforce Wake as I did in my last AAR?

==>Mini-KB Location, last seen heading east for Iwo-jima on the 12th of December.

China
A mess of units moving to hold x3 locations and establish a line to hold forward, expect this is a mistake but I am going to give it a shot.

I am moving to hold the line and send some units with no AV that start in the rear to block supply lines to slow him down until they are destroyed.

Air lifting of supplies to China is now in process.

Japanese Amphibious Landings:
Amphibious Assault at Brunei (65,87)
Amphibious Assault at Tabiteuea (137,134)

Japan Conquerors the Following Bases:
Burias
Victoira Point
Buin
San Fernadno
Tuguegarao
Calayan
Tabiteuea

Allies Amphibious Landings:
None.

Allies Conquerors the Following Bases:
None.

Hong Kong
Not long for this world, Attacks are going off at 1:1.

Singapore
Forts at 2(09%). Supplies ~66K all forces falling back to this hex. Trying to figure out if a Leader swap is the way to go or not here for the III Corps and the Army HQ.

Philippines
Forts 0(10%) at Clark and 1(09%)Manila - 2(21%) at Bataan. Forts and expanding at Manila and Bataan. Clark is held by 29k/40k troops with more in route. Manila is held by 15K of troops. The goal is to move LCU's from Manila to Clark and from Clark to Bataan (rotate) as long as possible. If we are lucky we can hold for a little longer in x3 at Clark and then fall back to our forts at Bataan. Not sure why he has not smashed the port/airfield at Bataan but not going to complain either.

NEI
I am assuming the task force I smashed with Force Z was to grab a forward base for air recon and for naval bombers. As he is in the process of grabbing Berunei he will at least have a base for naval search to make a repeat harder. Also note there is one multi-BB taffey and one multi-CA taffey operating to cover this landing.

Air Losses to Date
Japan - 195
Allies - 188

Seems I was Wrong about the Mini-KB....

Thought it was going to meet the main KB, but it seems I am wrong. It shows up four hexes from a task force built around the Boise that has not been detected.....

CL Boise
CL Tromp
CL Marblehead
DD Jupiter

All forces set to engage the enemy....

Seems we missed in the night :(

KB and Mini-KB
===> KB stuck at Brisbane with two days of Port Strikes and then retired north hitting ports as withdrew. Several AMs, XAKLs and Minor xAPs were sunk, no other targets within his range. Some AMs and minor xAPs hide in port, the one light AA unit is deployed to this base. I think he was looking for the Oz Surface forces or my CV’s but they were not near the area. Last seen January 1st heading towards Rabaul.
==>Mini-KB Location, in the Borneo area.
China
A mess of units moving to hold x3 locations and establish a line to hold forward, expect this is a mistake but I am going to give it a shot. We have caused him some issues with some of the mobile units in reserve and his advance to Changsha is on hold until he can reopen his supply lines. I tried an attack as he moved a unit out to open his retreat path but timed it poorly and did not get a good roll. I am moving to hold the line and send some units with no AV that start in the rear to block supply lines to slow him down until they are destroyed. Air lifting of supplies to China continues, only one ACU in action air lifting supplies.

From
CICPAC
to
POTUS

As the war approaches it’s first month, please find a brief appreciation summary of current situation as of January 1st 1942.

NEI
We expect this area to fall completely to the Japanese over the next ninety days. While Force Z has won a major navel victory early on and was able to blunt two more quick thrust for loss of only two Dutch CL’s the Repulse will be under repair in India for the next sixty days, the remaining forces in Java can delay for a while but will be overwhelmed.

PHI
When supplies run out in the next ninety days, it will fall and no relief is possible. While we hold Manila, Clark and Bataan it is only a matter of time until our forces are reduced to the fall back on Bataan. The good news is that air campaign here has paused allowing our forces to rebuild and expand there fortifications.

Singapore
We may be able to hold this area longer than it appears, all forces are falling back and diggings in. We have some supply convoys in route and several have made it through. The Air Force is holding but we expect this to be reduced in the air over the coming week.

LOC to Australia
A. Johnson Island has been reinforced and should be able to hold.
B. Christmas Island is held in force and will require a major operation to be reduced and taken by Japan.
C. Penrhyn Island, Midway Island and Palmyra are help and additional reinforcements are in route to all three locations.
D. Pago Pago is now held in force by the Marines and will require a major operation to be reduced and taken by Japan.
E. Suva is now held by two NZ Brigades and US Forces and will require a major operation to be reduced and taken by Japan.
F. The NEI was stripped of as much fuel, oil and supplies and moved to Australia as possible. It does not appear at this time any additional resources can be moved out of the NEI.
G. Minor Australian LCU’s are now in Espiritu Santo and New Hebrides.
The 18th UK Infantry Division is located at Perth and its location withheld from the citizens of Australia, a US Infantry Division should arrive in the next week weeks in Melbourn. Should Japan advance here they should be in for quite a surprise.

Burma
The 1st Burma Division and server armored ACU’s are forward deployed to Pegu to hold the river crossing. The 17th Indian Division is forming at Rangoon along with additional armored units inbound with larger amounts of supply, The AVG along with British ACU’s are providing air cover. We may not be able to hold Burma but we hope to by until May or June until we are forced back into India.

Air War
Allied high command has come to the conclusion that outside of the Hurricane all allied fighters are inferior to the Japanese Zero. The F4F-3/4, P-40E and P-39 can meet the Zero but are at a disadvantage unless layered CAP is in use and properly trained pilots are used (70 A2A, 70 DEF, 50+EXP). Pilot training is in full swing but won’t meet our needs for 120 days at the earliest.

We are concerned we will not be able to gain control of anyone one front until January of 1943 given the current projected projection allocation to this theater of war. To offset this we propose following notes –

1. AA can help offset this both sea based and land based.
2. We need to leverage all of the airframes of our allies – to this effect Canadian Fighter and Bomber units are now in route to India.
3. Chinese ACU’s were transferred to the China Task Force HQ and are now training in India.
4. One Marine Fighter ACU is now in route to India.
5. AUS and NZ Bomber and Fighter ACU’s will need to be utilized as soon as possible.

Offensive Operations
Given the imbalance of Naval Forces we do not foresee offensive options on a general front until the end of August or September of this year. We in the process of identifying small local offensive options in each command that can be launched should the location of the KB be defined. But being honest until the front stabilizes we will not be able to define these.

As always……

From
SOPAC
to
CINCPACFLT

After all of areas of reasonability for this area command below is a summary of forces currently assigned and recommendation for an active defense.

Fiji
Suva is 3P /// 2AF /// 3-07% Fort with 9700 supplies. It is held by 148th UIS FAB, 45th Bae Group, 1st Fiji BN, 8th NZ BDGE Suva Navel BF & 35th NZ Bty. One Hudson ACU and one Vincent ACU is based out of this location for naval searches.

Nadi is 1P /// 1AF /// 2-14% Fort with 1300 supplies. It is held by 147th FAB, 131st FAB, 2nd Fiji BN, 1st NZ Base Force, 14th NZ BDGE & 37th NZ Bty.

Pago Pago
Pago Pago is 2P /// 1AF /// 2-84% Fort with 20000 supplies. It is held by 104th USN Bae Force, 2nd USMC Rgt, 8th USMC Rgt, 2nd USMC Para BN, 2nd USMC Pioneer BN & 7th USMC Def BN. Additional support services are in route. One PBY ACU is based out of this location for naval searches.

Auckland, NZ
The fortifications and Port are both under upgrade as this will area is projected to be our initial supply and fuel hub for the area until sufficient naval and air forces can be based out of Fiji or Samoa. Supplies are at ~15K and fuel at ~17K. A supply convoy of 40K and a fuel convoy of 140K are in route.

At this time we are looking at sending several Fighter ACU’s to cover this port along with sending all of the mobile ARDs and ARs. Once we are confidante of the safety of Sydney these will relocate to this area as the largest remaining shipyard west of Pearl Habor.

Penrhyn Island
Penrhyn Island is 1P /// 0AF /// 1-20% Fort with 3900 supplies. It is held by 3rd Port Maint Engt BN & 3rd USMC Def BN. Additional support services are in route. One PBY ACU is will be based out of this location for naval searches once an AVP arrived on location.

Active Defense
Given the imbalance of Naval Forces we do not foresee offensive options on a general front until the end of August or September of this year. However, we are looking to concentrate forces for small local counter attacks as the situation warrants. Fiji and Samoa will be the areas where these forces are concentrated on this front.

The current plan is to base 150 – 300 Fighters and any available bombers on Pago Pago (this may shift to Fiji), supported by a large mine field, costal batteries, PT Boats and large surface force built around four to six of the slow BB’s. This surface force will sit under fighter cover and not venture forth but should provide the needed added protection against the use of enemy surface forces shutting down the airfields with bombardment.

As always……

The status of the United States Pacific Fleet as of January 5th 1942. In a little less than one month we have been able to restore some of the Battle Fleet to operation status though repairs.

Battle Fleet
One Task Force will be built around four to six of the slow Battleships. Battleships will be added as the receive surface and air radar upgrades. This taskforce size will not exceed fifteen ships and will be filled out by DD’s and CL’s which also have received surface and air radar upgrades

Carrier Divisions
Each Carrier will form the core of small taskforce of eight to twelve ships. CA’s, CL’s and DD’s will be added as need to flush out the taskforces. Ideally all ships will have had their surface and air radar upgrades. Given the lessons learned to date we are proposing the following changes to each carrier until the arrival of the Avenger Torpedo Bombers. Each US Carrier will exchange their TB ACU for a USMC DB ACU. In addition, one USMC Fighter ACU will be added to each Carrier to provide additional fighter cover and bring the approximate number of aircraft on each carrier to 99 planes.

USN CV DIV 1
USS Enterprise, southeast of Pago Pago and in route back to Pearl Harbor. Needs to replenish its carrier plane strength.

USN CV DIV 2
USS Lexington, southeast of Pago Pago and in route back to Pearl Harbor. Needs to replenish its carrier plane strength.

USN CV DIV 3
USS Saratoga, southeast of Pago Pago and in route back to Pearl Harbor. Needs to replenish its carrier plane strength.

USN CV DIV 4
USS Yorktown, southeast of Pago Pago and in route back to Pearl Harbor. Needs to replenish its carrier plane strength.

Oklahoma
Scuttled after Pearl Harbor.

Maryland
Leaving Pearl Harbor for the west coast, Sys Damage 02 Float Damage 37(37).

Tennessee
Leaving to leave Pearl Harbor in two days for the west coast, Sys Damage 40 Float Damage 35(35).

California
Leaving to leave Pearl Harbor in two days for the west coast, Sys Damage 21 Float Damage 20(20).

Nevada
About to enter a 21-day upgrade, Sys Damage 04 Float Damage 15(15).

Pennsylvania
About to enter a 38-day upgrade, Sys Damage 03 Float Damage 14(14) Engine 5(5).

West Virginia
In Route to Pearl Harbor needs a 68-day upgrade, currently part of the core of the USN 1st BAT DIV.

Arizona
In Route to Pearl Harbor, currently part of the core of the USN 1st BAT DIV.

Colorado
Will leave Seattle in three days for Pearl Harbor.

Warspite
Will leave Seattle in three days for Pearl Harbor.

ASW Around Pearl

Seems Lam0ttePicquet is either very good with his submarines or getting very good advise in his forum and is listening to the advice. After trying to hunt close into Pearl for the first 20 days it appears his submarines are now siting 13 - 16 hexes from Pearl. All his inital use of submianes lead to was damage to his submarines and some decent EXP for the ASW DDs. After going to ground for three weeks around Pearl they are back.

I suspect there is a shell around the islands and this is what the Maryland ran into on its way to the west coast. I am looking into this "shell" of submarines now.

Thirteen hexes is outside the ASW range of the B-17D and LB-30 ---- as of today all B-17Ds (24) LB-30 (8) and PBYs (24) are set to just naval search. I now have four groups of 3 DDs on ASW working at these ranges. If we start seeing the sub's move closer to Pearl, the rest of the bombers based at Pearl will be set to ASW (currently training gound attack). If we start to see large number of submarines 13+ hexes out we may move some of the B-17E to Naval Search to help vector in the DDs.

I wish I had more PBY's the ones I have are needed to provide advance warning in other areas.

KB is Back!!!!

Not much going on here that he can interfere with.... His raid is about seven days to late as the units and supplies are ashore. The NZ Force took some damage from the strike but will fall back towards NZ at flank speed and should make their escape.

I hope he makes for a strike on Brisbane where I am staging supply and units to hold the SWPAC as there are now 75 P-40E's all with great leaders and 70 A2A skill pilots plus one Heavy AA ACU and one Light AA ACU.

I-168 must have the best sub commander the IJN has. In my game against the AI it is hanging around PH area and although several different ASW TFs have targeted it often, no one can get a hit on it. Meanwhile, I-168 has picked off a couple of AMs, a DM and a DMS. My DDs have been lucky enough to dodge his torps. Good thing the AI does not vary its patrol zone and I can send shipping around it.

I would have to agree, one of the reasons I interesting things about playing this game when things like this occur I look into some of the history with the units/ships involved. I hope this stating sub commander has an aggressive setting after reading --- "observing the torpedo hits, I-168 descended to 200 feet and slowed to three knots directly under Yorktown. American destroyers Gwin, Hughes, and Monaghan dropped 60 depth charges before damaging I-168 at 1530. A depth charge exploding near the bow put out the lights, damaged the forward battery room, sprung the hatches to No. 1 torpedo tube and reduced the submerged depth to 60 feet.

From
Chief of Staff
to
POTUS

As the war approaches the middle of the month and the carrier taskforces are soon to arrive we wanted to provide an update on the current recommendations for the change in command in the Pacific and the current assessment of the use of the INJ Combined Fleet.

Command Arrangements in the Pacific
After the receipt of the of the preliminary summary report of the air assault at Pearl Harbor, the relief of the General Short and Admiral Kimmel will be required. While not all of the blame lies with them as the commanders on the spot their relief is required if for no other reason to provide a means to reset the moral of the pacific command and possibly the nation.

As soon as the carriers arrive back at Pearl, Admiral King will be conducting a large house cleaning of ship and land commanders throughout the Pacific of commanders that have not met our expectations in this theater. While some of these commanders may be unfairly tarnished as in many cases they simply did not have the support or resources to achieve their assigned objective in these trying times we need officers that are seeking reasons why they can move forward not ones that are explain why something that can’t be accomplished.

Moving forward with the appointment of Admiral Nimitz, he will be the theater commander for all naval, ground and air forces assigned to the pacific. We are looking into further subdividing this theater into area commands reporting to the theater commander but as of this time these arrangements are not finalized.

IJN Combined Fleet

As of this time it appears the IJN maintaining its force density by keeping all of its fast carriers combined in this force. It was last seen on the 11th of January when its air forces slightly damaged the Leander, Pensacola & Achilles at Luganville. That was two days ago and the Combined Fleet (KB) has not been seen after this time.

We are not certain where or what the KB is currently up to and there are several possibilities presented during our last staff study ---

1) This simply could have been a raid into the area that fizzled once the IJN realized there was not any shipping in the area or ports to sink as they did on their Raid of Brisbane. (10%)
2) A prelude to full operations in this area with the occupation of New Hebrides and New Caledonia. (30%)
3) Sleight of Hand, with the KB in route to ambush Force Z and the Dutch Forces at Batavia from behind (10%).
4) Sleight of Hand, with the KB in route to ambush British Forces at Colombo from behind (10%).
5) Sleight of Hand, with the KB in route to ambush New Zealand and American forces at Fiji and Samoa (10%).
6) Sleight of Hand, with the KB in route to ambush Central Pacific Area. (10%)
7) Sleight of Hand, with the KB in route to ambush North Pacific Area. (10%)
8) Sleight of Hand, with the KB in route to support the advance in the NEI. (10%)

As always……

KB & Mini-KB

From
Acting CICPAC
to
All Commands

The staff study prediction for the KB and Mini-KB will move into the area of New Hebrides and New Caledonia for full occupation is correct. At this time the 6th AUS RAAF BF was lost at sea moving to Luganville and a minor supply convoy to New Caledonia has been lost.

All submarine forces in the area are to march to the sound of the guns and the AUS ART Reg in route to Luganville has been re-routed to Port Moresby.
Ground combat at Luganville (120,150)

Allied Bombardment attack
Attacking force 967 troops, 6 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 36
Defending force 3825 troops, 37 guns, 4 vehicles, Assault Value = 126

Assaulting units:
39th Australian Battalion

Defending units:
Sasebo 8th SNLF
Yokosuka 4th SNLF

It is unlikely at this time any additional reinforcements can reach the New Hebrides until the carrier forces retire.

There was an image but having some issued uploading with the ASP page tonight.

Will this local counter attack matter in the long run, not at all. But we are advancing in 1942 in the PHI the hope is to slow his resupply, capture some supply and be a general pest.

From
CICPAC-Designate
to
POTUS

As I will be assuming command of all forces in the Pacific Theater of Operations (PTO) tomorrow, please find a short summary of the updates from the theater as of January 19th 1942. All carriers are currently at Pearl Harbor undergoing some much needed repairs after 45 days at sea.

NEI
We expect this area to fall completely to the Japanese over the next 45 - 90 days. While Force Z won a major naval victory early on and was able to blunt two more quick thrusts for loss of only two Dutch
CL’s, Force Z has been reduced to the Prince of Wales. Force Z has been forced from the area due to the inability to contest the Japanese forces in the air. We are looking at some options to correct this in the short term but over the next 30 days we will lose complete control of the air as additional Japanese forces and bases in the area come online.

PHI
When supplies run out in the next ninety days, it will fall and no relief is possible. While we hold Clark and Bataan it is only a matter of time until our forces are reduced and then fall back on Bataan. Supplies are at 38K between all locations and fortifications are 3 at Bataan and 2 at Clark.

Singapore
We may be able to hold this area longer than it appears, all forces have fallen back to Singapore and are diggings in. Supplies are at 67K and the Forts at 3 and building. The Air Force has been forced to withdraw due to losses but it may take him several days to be certain we are gone for good.

LOC to Australia

The KB has been spotted and is in route to the New Hebrides area again, we assume the Mini-KB is following in its wake. Additional air search in the area has allowed us detect them further out but no naval forces will be able to prevent this raid or further landings at this time.

An additional Infantry Division has been located to reinforce both Fiji and New Caledonia, if these forces can reach the front quickly enough we should be able to hold these areas. However, it will be 25 – 50 days before these forces can arrive and they will have to land when the IJN is not blockading the islands.

Burma
The 1st Burma Division, 17th Indian Infantry Division and server armored ACU’s are forward deployed to Pegu and are fighting the advanced forces of the IJA. The 7th Armored Brigade along some ART and AA ACUS are in route to Rangoon. The AVG along with British ACU’s are providing air cover. We may not be able to hold Burma but we hope to by until May or June until we are forced back into India but this may be overly optimistic.

As always……

KB?????

Not sure if this is the KB or just a raiding force either way the unloading of support units will stop at Pago Pago and the supply and fuel convoys to New Zealand may hold in route depending on what happens next turn.

Looks like pretty standard stuff for the opening months. I think you can expect more questions when you start mounting your own offensives.

SWPAC & SoPAC

The race is on to see where the final line will be in this area, not sure where the final line will be but if he wants to advance far in this area he will have to bring a little more than two SNLF forces he has in New Hebrides so far.

We need additional land forces in New Caledonia and Fiji. I have two US Divisions that are in route but it will be 40+ days until they can get them in place. I am going to look into sending some AUS forces but I need to be careful not to strip too many as my plan is to send the AUS units from the middle east to India.

I am sending two additional PBY ACUs to the area, one will be based at Waipapkauri and Tahiti. These should close any gaps in the supply runs to New Zealand or the SoPAC area. One additional PBY will be needed for Koumac but I need to see if I can hold this area before I look at sending the PBY’s to this location.

Norfolk Island
0P /// 1AF /// 0-20% Fort with 2800 supplies. AUS Light Horse Rgt and the 15th AUS AF Base Force.

Nadi
1P /// 1AF /// 3-23% Fort with 1800 supplies. It is held by 147th FAB, 131st FAB, 2nd Fiji BN, 1st NZ Base Force, 14th NZ BDGE & 37th NZ Bty. One PBY is based out of this base.

Suva
3P /// 2AF /// 3-23% Fort with 7300 supplies. It is held by 148th UIS FAB, 45th Bae Group, 1st Fiji BN, 8th NZ BDGE Suva Navel BF & 35th NZ Bty. One Hudson ACU and one Vincent ACU is based out of this location for naval searches.

Rockhampton
Aus Light Horse Rgt, 17th AUS AF Base Force. One PBY ACU based out of this airfield.

Pago Pago
