Oh, BTW, getting into that clear hex between Hangchow and Shanghai would not even be enough. The force there would have to be able to immediately retreat any Imperial force that moved in from Hangchow. Why? Because we have no units in Shanghai, so all DAW HQ has to do is move a single unit from Shanghai to flip that hex side and then his units could move (and is necessary retreat) from that open hex into Shanghai. In other words, with multiple divisions and 83-83k troops in Hangchow the Imperials could very likely force the march from Hangchow to Shanghai. So I took the option to trap the units at Nanking from ever reaching Shanghai.

The Imperials at Nanyang retreated toward Sian. The Imperials at Nanking have changed direction and are heading SE, into our other division which has just entered Wusih, where it will attack at once. Our armor has made it to Kiangtu and will evict the 2,100 or so enemy there.

Hangchow is dangerous flying for Allied fighters on ground attack. Almost 3 dozen P-40 and P-38 losses were tallied there today.

Zombie clearance almost complete on Formosa.

I was especially impressed with how well single squadrons performed against a numerically greater CAP time after time. The forecast for tomorrow is rain, which would make for poor bombing weather. Our fighters will rest a day while our bombers wait for good weather.

We are sending a number of CV, CVE, and two fast BB to Pearl Harbor for upgrades with DD and DE that are also due for upgrades. That will make 6 of the 8 fast USN BB upgrading, and most of the old USN BB are due for upgrades. In a couple of cases those would be quite lengthy conversions and will be put off until after the war to keep the ships available. In other cases the ships would be out of action for at least two months considering travel time and so will wait until the fast BB are all back on line. A couple of upgrades are brief but will wait for the moment.

Intel screen. We have passed 100,000 points! Working hard to get the Japanese Army Loss Points greater than ours. Possibly they already would be so if not for the bug while some large formations were destroyed. Can't be sure.

The defenses at Sapporo were reduced and will be assaulted by a larger force tomorrow. The ex-Bihoro defenders were soundly thrashed.

The Empire's fighter legions swept the skies over Muroran and did just a little better than even. The old battleships have re-based to Hakodate and will hit three of the nearby Imperial air bases this coming night (Akita, Hirosaki/Aomori, Ominato), so any sweeps tomorrow should be meager. The two fast battleships on station will hit Hachinohe, now known to be the site of 19(2) Ki-84r Frank factories. A number of 2EB groups will strike those factories after the naval bombardments clear the way.

Rain forecast over the Home islands again tomorrow so the B-29 groups will stay on the ground, which is their natural habitat anyway.

Service Level 5 is pretty tough! I think only now are >190 of the ~209 or so B-29-25 at Taihoku available, and look how long ago the last raid was.

I don't know the numbers, but I do know - mostly from people on this forum very knowledgeable on the subject - that they required lots of care. A big difference between this game and real life is that almost all aircraft, especially bombers, fly far more frequently in the game than they did in real life.

This is not a horrible thing, because it is the whole set of models (another way of looking at the game) that has to work together to make a credible experience. That means that making any one particular aspect "correct" might pose intractable problems in other areas of the game.

Maybe someone who knows more about B-29s in WWII will chime in?

I am far from an expert.

However I agree with you WITPQS that the game models them well or 'well enough'. The operational downtime or fragility is the best abstract representation possible.

Overwhelming fleets of 100's of B29's would unbalance the strategic bombing campaign especially if setting fires / manpower / industry.

Their flying time was severely limited due to engine issues I have read many places.

Wiki says the following; I am not sure wiki is perfectly accurate however in WW2 articles I have yet to find any major errors or omissions

This principally agrees with other less detailed reading I recall over the years... the engines were the issue till post war era.

The most common cause of maintenance headaches and catastrophic failures were the engines.[22] Although the Wright R-3350 Duplex-Cyclone radial engines later became a trustworthy workhorse in large piston-engined aircraft, early models were beset with dangerous reliability problems. This problem was not fully cured until the aircraft was fitted with the more powerful Pratt & Whitney R-4360 "Wasp Major" in the B-29D/B-50 program, which arrived too late for World War II. Interim measures included cuffs placed on propeller blades to divert a greater flow of cooling air into the intakes which had baffles installed to direct a stream of air onto the exhaust valves. Oil flow to the valves was also increased, asbestos baffles installed around rubber push rod fittings to prevent oil loss, thorough pre-flight inspections made to detect unseated valves, and frequent replacement of the uppermost five cylinders (every 25 hours of engine time) and the entire engines (every 75 hours

Intel screen. Since two days ago the designation has changed from "Minor Victory" to "Major Victory", but the VP ratio is still below 2 to 1. Is this normal or is it a bug?
