The date is coming close for the free upgrade. I have talked to a few gamers already and wondering what the rest of you are going to do?

upgraded a year ago - zero issues

actually i did a clean install over the upgrade - it seems you are much more likely to get issues if you just run with the upgrade

I bought win 10 for my new machine last year, and I upgraded my old win 7 machine to win 10 a couple of weeks ago. I really wasn't planning on upgrading that machine, but I like win 10 enough. It was fairly painless as far as upgrades. I upgraded, then I ran the built in reset option to do a clean install. Both of my versions are the pro versions which means that I can enable or disable any windows features I choose.

I upgraded my home machine about seven months ago, and so far it's been working fairly well. I never set up Cortana because I'm opposed to anything that makes me register another user ID. I'm still not as comfortable with the new search function; I prefer to search from a window just as in Windows 7. And Pacific War under DOSBox seems to be more bug and crash-prone. Otherwise, it's working smoothly.

i have a computer and laptop, one was clean install one was upgrade no issues with either. I like Win 10 so far after 6 months, in fact some older wargames i had trouble with under Win7 i have run with no adjustments so far under Win 10.

I remembered one adjustment i had to make, combat command had to be installed in the C drive to work, other than that nada.

Go for it! Win7 will soon be geriatric... Let alone WinXP...

Does the Windows 10 compatibility mode work with older games (such as the SC2 games)?

A clean install will erase everything on the hard drive? Ouch

What do I need to look for when installing the upgrade?

Thanks for the replies

The default is upgrading from win 7 or 8, and leaves everything intact. I just mentioned that I upgraded from 7 to 10, then performed a clean install because I don't want all the old crap hanging around.

I still use Winxp on this machine and use a linux usb flash for work. I will never use Win10. I dont get why you feel the need to change your OS. Theres no appreciable advantage to it.

There are significant advantages in speed, security, support, etc. if you are running a modern computer (say i5, 8 gigs).

I was the ultimate XP diehard, but when I got modern computer went to Win7 and then Win10. No issues with tons of games. Was just playing an SSG game in fact.

My wife auto-upgraded from win7 to win8.3 to win10 without even knowing she did it. Amazing.

I hate change, but I hate viruses more. Plus, I want to play some modern games before I pass away

I've run the W10 upgrade on three desktops and one laptop, no issues. All data and apps remained in tact. It is pretty amazing. I much prefer the new Microsoft to that of old. Seems they care about thir customers now. And they better, with Linux and MacOS offering top notch options.

Thanks guys for the tips. I installed today and it went well. Now, I need to look at all the bells and whistles.

Any suggestions on what to turn Off? I did run a custom install and turned off some of the app location things.

Thanks Paulus, Battlefield 4 works from Origin and the one good thing that happened with the change, I didn't get the box about the screen come up asking me about my color for the screen. It was coming up every time I started a B4 game.

Battle Academy worked, Case Blue, DC3, all were fine.

Initially I had issues with Windows 10 (BSOD v2.0), but with the last update, I haven't had any issues at all. Oh and those BSOD v2.0 issues were typically due to driver updates for the graphics card on my machine.

My computer genius wants me to get it. Frankly my desktop is just an interface for my TV and a bajillion videos from my drive bay as well as Netflix.

My laptop is a typewriter.

I will probably not be using 10 until either of my machines dies from hardware failure.

like many tbh, fear and lack of understanding puts them off, imo it's no different from win xp, win 7 or 8, just added the best bits of them all and made it faster and more stable, and safe, but if your happy it does all that you want of it, it's your choice, but most won't get the option soon when only win 10 is out and a new pc is bought and it's the only options open to them, so for me i'd say get used to it now, or later as everyone on windows will be using it soon enough in one way or another.

and 10 reasons why you shouldn't just for balance

Oh dear....fortunately a limit on operating systems has never been the case-

Point being for Matrix, please dont limit game designs to Win10.

i have done the upgrade now last month finally, and i think i wll stay with it. So far it is running all my games, old and new - even still can run Napoleon in Italy and For Liberty, which is great

The only one so far which i cannot get to work is Cossacks 2 Battle for Europe, though strangely Cossacks 2 Napoleonic Wars works

No upgrsde here. Doing fine with Vista 64. I haven't seen a game I wanted yet that "required" Win10 so until that day comes I'm stayin where I am just like I did Win7, Win8 and 8.1.

Much like all things that sell, new items are just that, made to sell. They put scare tactics into you like oh you won't get virus protect and blah blah. I went nearly 10 years with no virus protection at all from 1996 to 2006. Don't really know why I ever installed it in the first place. I think it was when I started banking online instead of writing checks.

I'll probably get (have to) Win 10 when I buy a new computer in two more years. This has been a good one though. Bought it in 2008 and it's still rollin along and only bought one new thing for it in a Video card that is still rollin along as well a PowerColor 5700hd 1gb. The longevity has amazed me. I don't think I ever had one to last so long and give me so much good service as the PowerColor Model I bought.

You can follow the Jones's if you want but I never have and never will. When I think of the money I've saved not following the crowd all the time since 1996 makes me very happy.

Did the upgrade. Everything seems to be working fine except for Rome Total War (first addition). That's because of the embedded disk copywrite security thingy (as you can tell I am not an IT wiz), which is now in SEGA's ball court now, to re-release it removing the security impediment.

Rome Total War works fine on steam on win 10, it's on my list and has no issues, same as all total war games on windows 10, copy protection is another matter, just need a updated version or run it as admin with more permissions etc

Reading through steam reviews makes it sound like that game is quite buggy and many people have issues running it on recent systems.
