This is the second battle in the campaign "Hell On Wheels"

Brigade Support Area (BSA) 2407890100z…

Col Dave Knack, the XO of 2AD (Fwd) was walking amongst the repair and logistics facilities that had been setup in and around Zeven, some 20kms behind the current frontlines, looking at the final Operational Readiness Report (ORR).

Over the past 36hrs, his recovery crews had brought back as much damaged and or destroyed equipment that they could. Once back in the BSA, his maintenance team chiefs evaluated each piece of equipment like medics doing triage. Those that could be salvaged went to the repair yards. The M2/3 Bradley’s and M1A1 tanks had priority. If some jackass officer wanted his Humvee fixed, he was promptly put in his place by an NCO. Those vehicles that were deemed unrepairable were stripped of every useful part by another team of mechanics. Those parts were placed into Milvans or Connexes’ marked appropriately. There was no forms to filled out, no tracking of these parts. If it was needed to put a vehicle back into the fight, it was taken.
The vehicles that were repaired were sent to a holding area where they were manned by replacements and wounded soldiers returning to duty. Once fueled and loaded out with what ammo was available, groups of 4 would be released with an escort vehicle to get them back to the units.

It was the Class V (Ammo) that concerned Knack. They knew the units would burn through their basic loads, but the battle around Buchholz had consumed a huge amount of 120mm, 25mm, M2, and TOW 2B ammo. Most of the vehicles leaving the BSA had half loads….

Hq’s 2AD (Fwd) TOC....
Gen Funk was sitting in his Humvee looking over the intelligence brief from NORTHAG. Now the 21st MRD of the 2nd GTA was attempting to continue the attack. Or at least that was what NORTHAGS G2 thought….
As in anything that concerned war, nothing was definite. 36hrs ago, his force was ordered to pull back some 20kms to shorten the defensive line. Fine, thought Funk at the time. He fell back on his support structure. The BSA was alive with purpose. Tanks and Bradley’s were repaired, soldiers showered and got hot meals, replacement personnel were integrated into units. But it wasn’t enough….. Especially for 3/41 Inf.

24hrs later he had received the warning order to defend vic Sittensen. JSTARS had picked up enemy movement vic the B75 Highway moving NW. The belief was Ivan was trying to secure the A1 Autobahn corridor to continue his advance on Bremen. 12hrs after the warning order, his Bde was on the move….

To Funk, it was all about who could secure the better ground. It was night, rain, miserable weather to most, but his forces had trained in these conditions for over a decade. His lead elements were in Sittensen, but from here, east, it was a crap shoot. His intent was to deploy his forces in a layered, mobile defense. The question was, how close were the Russian lead elements? His Recon?

2407215z…Black 2 M3A1…”Sgt, do we have air assets to the east vic Kalbe”? asked the M3’s gunner. “Whatcha got Poz?” replied SSG Hill as he dropped into the turret. “Driver stay on this road, don’t bunch up on Black 1” said Hill as he put his eye to the sight extension. The red thermal background was contrasted with white “Hot Spots”. On the right edge of the sight picture he saw it, moving slow and low above the buildings.

“****!, Black 1 Black 2 enemy choppers vic Kalbe!”

Lt Stevens keyed his CVC and transmitted the contact report over 2/66Ar’s Bn Cmd net. Each Co Cdr also heard the report. The same report came from Delta and Charlie 3/41. The Russians’ were close…

“Contact BRDM’s east out!” came the report from Black 2 who had just entered the western outskirts of Kalbe. “How many 2?!” called Stevens. “Spotted at least 3 before we pulled back” came the reply. Lt Stevens decided to set up a blocking position along the L142 between Tiste and Kalbe. There were two tank companies to his north, one of which was going into Kalbe….

“Multiple tanks, pc’s, moving west vic 347142 out” came the next spot report from White 6 of Delta 2/66Ar.

Ltc Tatum, 2/66Ar’s Cdr, made the call to his FSO, “Red 60, Knight 6, fire FASCAM TRP 1 over.” This is Red 60, standby for shot, over” “White 6, you copy, over?” “This is White 6, roger, standing by…”

The recon battle was engaged…..

LTC Miller’s forces had just made it into Hamersen when they picked up the Hinds. What the Hinds didn’t know was that there two Chaparrals sections along with a Vulcan section were assigned to his TF. Within 5 minutes, the flaming wreckage of the aircraft could be seen in the fields in front of D/3/41….

07240232z…2AD(Fwd) TOC…Brad Fuller, the Bde S2, had the uncanny knack of visualizing the battlefield in his head. All the units, call signs, graphics, terrain, TRP’s, all flowed into a clear picture.

The initial recon fight had gone well. The Russians’ probably did not have a clear picture how in depth the Bde defense was. The problem lay in the north where the enemy had pushed two tank companies into Kalbe.

The FASCAM strike at the bridge that the L142 crossed the Oste had done its job, separating the enemy attacking force. Like all West German streams and creeks, the side channels were lined with concrete, canted at a 60 to 70 degree angle making them into antitank ditches that required them to be bridged. The following forces were still on the east side of the Oste…

The lead enemy units had made it as far as Tiste, when flanking fires from the tanks and Bradley’s on the high ground overlooking the roadway destroyed over 20 vehicles. Elements of Delta entered Kalbe and were now engaging the enemy armored units trying to cross the Oste.

In the south, the screening force made up of C/3/41 was under attack by at least an enemy Bn with another spotted moving north of Stemmen. The veteran tankers of D/3/41 had been taking out recon BMP’s and BRDM’s trying to cross the open ground 2500m’s to their front. They now began to engage the enemy units trying to exit Helvesiek

Thanks to share AAR. I used FASCAM mines in the south in this scenario, that helped nicely.

07240249z….D/2/66 was caught up in the cluster on and around the A1 as the artillery struck. As Cpt Fisk tried to extricate his tank from the area, his XO with 2nd Plt was feeding him reports of the Company fight. The issue at hand was ammo…. D22 was reporting ammo “Black”. That meant that crew was down to around 10 main gun rounds. Their fires, along with the Scouts, had eliminated the remnants of the Soviet tank company, but they needed resupply. They had destroyed almost 2 companies of T80's. “Blue 1, Green 6, get eyes on the bridge and report set , over” “6, this is 1, roger over”, “Roger out” replied Fisk. “No reason to tell the Lt how to do it” thought Fisk…

2/C/2/66Ar…. They had taken the lead enemy tank company in the flank. They were travelling down the L142 when the fire command came over the net. Within 5 seconds, 4 T80’s were destroyed. In 5 more, 3 more perished. They began to concentrate their fires at the hot spots 4500m’s away that seem to be just sitting there………

TF D/3/41… vic Hamersen…The experience learned from the crossroads was put to use. 2 rounds max from any position, then move. The tanks of Delta were literaly “dancing” in the town. The recon fight went to them, evident by the burning wrecks all along their front. They watched as their comrades fought the fight in Helvesiek and were overrun as they bought time. Then they took their revenge…

At 2800m’s the first rounds were fired. The enemy tank company did not make it another 500m’s…

2AD (Fwd) TOC….

From what he was hearing, Gen Funk could only surmise that the 3/41 Inf and 2/66Ar were fully engaged with the enemy and were holding their own. They had won the counter-recon fight. Those units were detected and destroyed early. The Russians’ were attacking blind. They were still coming into their kill zones.

The decision to fight this battle at night, with low visibility, worked to his advantage. The enemy had not been able to counter the technology and training advantage the Americans held. Funk turned an ear towards the radio’s.
2/66Ar was reporting the FASCAM at Kalbe was breached, and there were bridges over the Oste……..

The most pressing issue was along the L142 leading into Kalbe. He could not allow the Russians’ to penetrate his lines along the L142. It would split his defense in two……

07240305z….D/2/66Ar vic Kalbe

The amount of smoke and flames in the valley below, made target ID hard, real hard. SFC Hill was looking through his TC’s Sight Extension as he slowly scanned his sector. Hill was giving his gunner a few to rest his vision. Cujo appreciated the break as he knew the fight wasn’t over, not even close.

“Breaks over bud” said Hill as he swung the massive turret of his M1A1(HA) hard to the left. “Cujo, you see em?” asked Hill. “Yeah, got em. I’m tracking the lead vehicle “ replied the gunner. “Give me a range” ordered Hill. Cujos’ thumb depressed the LRF button on his controls. “1640m” said the gunner. Hill reached for the toggle switch on his CVC. “Green 6, Blue 4, contact tanks, L142 out!”

Cpt Fisk heard the contact report. He also reached for his toggle and repeated the same report to Battalion. He flipped his switch on his Comms box and the radio whirred backed onto the company net. It was the loaders job to insure that the radio freqs matched. Most times, it didn’t… ”Hold up Sir, said the loader as he moved the knob two clicks. “Go!” he yelled and Fisk moved the toggle…”Blue 4, quick status, over” said Fisk. “Red/Red/Black, over” came the response. “Roger, out” said Fisk.

The Asst S3, who was monitoring all the company nets, heard the transmission and repeated the report to Knight 6. “Green is Ammo Black” Tatum acknowledged the transmission and gave the order…”Red 6, Knight 6, warning order, over……

The volley fire from the 8 Delta tanks was devastating. At ranges inside of 1500m’s, the M1’s don’t miss. An enemy tank company disappeared….

"Crew Report, and give me a fuel and ammo count" said Hill over the intercom. "3/4 rear, full fronts, Driver Up" came the report from the hole. "4 Sabot 5 HEAT, I need to get into the semi-ready rack Sarge" reported the loader.
"Give me a minute Tim" said Hill. Hill would have to turn around, take off the spall curtain, and open the blast door on his side manually. This meant he was off the sight. Even though Cujo was a great gunner, two sets of eyes are always better than one. He had to make sure his wingman could cover both sectors. "#, this is 4. Ammo drill. cover my sector over" "Roger 4. Be fast, you're covered, over" came the reply.

B/2/66Ar vic Sittensen...“That’s the spot they dropped the FASCAM” said the XO of Bravo 2/66Ar to his gunner. “ There’s at least 5 tanks I can pick out, but the range is over 4500m’s” replied the gunner as he made small movements with his gunner’s control handle.” “White this is 5, snipers are weapons free, over” Six tanks in the company were designated “snipers” for their excellence in long-ranged gunnery. All six TC’s acknowledged the transmission and went to work….

The muzzle flashes were seen by the TC’s of Delta Co to their left. The red steaks of the tracers were reaching out across the open fields to their direct front then disappearing behind the trees. The distinct sound of multiple 120mm cannons followed. The explosions in the distance confirmed the rounds found their targets.

“Jesus!” exclaimed the TC of D22. “I count at least 6 hits. You see anything gunner?” Negative Sarge, whatever they’re shooting at is way out there and the tree line is blocking my view” said the gunner as he adjusted his thermal sight. “Whatever it was, they put a hurt on them” said the TC as he raised himself off the sight extension, pushed open his hatch to full open, and looked out to his front. It would take a minute for his eyes to adjust to the dark. Then another flash caught his eye to the right, followed by 3 more. The “crack” of the cannon fire reached him shortly thereafter. “Boom, BoomBoomBoom!”

TF D/3/41Inf vic Hamersen…..

“Spartan 6, Dragon Slayer 6, the sky to my left just lit up, anything I should be worried about over,” radioed the Co Cdr of TF D/3/41. He didn’t need any more threats showing up in his sector. They had fought off two enemy tank company’s in the past 30 minutes, and another was in Helvesiek. The last attack had made it to the bridge before being stopped, and now at least 10 BMP’s were trying to flank his position.

07240321z ….2AD (Fwd) TOC…
The situation in Kalbe/Tiste was reaching a critical point. Some 15+ T-80’s had rushed the defenses of D/2/66 overlooking Kalbe and had broken through. Funk heard the reports coming over the Bde Cmd net and looked at the large map hanging off the canvas. “They still have to deal with Bravo” he said to himself. Then another report came through. An enemy tank company had crested the high ground to the east of Kalbe and was trying to flank Delta’s position. Then the radio’s went quite. He knew by the lack of radio traffic that his soldiers were in the fight…….

The Russian’s had made it into Sittensen, but that’s as far as they got. They had stumbled upon a Hq’s element and began to fire at every vehicle they saw….Their victory was short lived....

Over 15 M1A1’s fired upon the enemy tanks at less than 1000m’s into their flanks and rear……

It seemed like a lifetime…the echo’s from the front were deafening. The amount of tank cannon fire was nothing like a “CALFEX” on range 301 in Graf. It got to the point when the TOC personnel were just staring into the distance…The one comforting thing was the sound was 120mm cannon fire….

Approximately 1500m’s north of Hamersen, HQ’s 33A, the 3/41 Inf Jump TOC, sat in a small depression that dropped off into the Oste. Inside the modified M113A1, were LTC Miller, SFC Bobby Cox, and the vehicle driver. SFC Cox was normally the S2 NCOIC, but when the Cdr needed the extra radios, he used the Jump TOC, and Cox was his Soviet Doctrine expert. Cox didn’t hold an Intel MOS; he was an infantry NCO with a ton of experience and a strong background in S2 Ops.

LTC Miller was listening to the battle that TF Delta was still in. He was now hearing that the BMP’s that had tried to bypass Hamersen were destroyed and only dismounts were visible. Enemy armor was still in Helvesiek, but the enemy commander of those units also saw the burning remnants of the first attack.
Enemy tanks were reported moving north out of Hamersen.

The M1A1’s opened fire at 3300m’s….

07240338z…The Soviet Divisional Cdr, having heard the reports that his tanks had reached Sittensen, launched the attack of his third Regt. Attacking across 3 separate axis, he expected to overwhelm the American defensive position in Hamersen. He didn’t know that his tanks in Sittensen no longer existed…

The visibility was still poor and dawn was at least an hour away as the lead elements of the Russian attack cleared the woods and the low ground. Even with the low visibility, what they saw to their fronts made them pause. Burning and smoldering vehicles littered the battlefield. Tank turrets lay next to their hulls. What used to be BMP’s were now mangled heaps of metal. The center attack column had just passed through what could only be described as hell as the drivers avoided the burning hulks as they cleared the woods. The same view greeted the the southern column as it came out of the low ground northeast of Helvesiek.

HQ’s 2AD (Fwd)…Gen Funk was standing outside the TOC when the S3 NCOIC appeared. “Sir, they need you . The Russians are launching another attack” said the Sergeant. Funk spun on his heels and quickly moved between the S2 and S3 tracks. “Brad, what’s he throwing in this time?” asked Funk to his S2. “Regt (-) Sir, three pronged. These two columns just pulled out of the woods here” pointed Fuller on his intel map. “One turned southwest towards Hamersen, the other is moving northwest towards Sittensen. The third just appeared east of Helvesiek. Looks as though they want to flank 3/41’s position in Hamersen.” offered the Capt.

“Status in Sittensen?” asked the General. “The bad guys beat up the A/4/41 Hq’s group pretty bad, but the Iron Knights made them pay for that foray. The town is secure, as is the L142. Also, Ltc Tatum just reported his reserve company (Alpha) was pulling on line just north of the town.” reported Fuller. Funk thought about that for a second…..

Turning to his FSO, Funk asked how many FASCAM mission he had left. “One”came the response……

Three axis of attacks, one mission. The General made the call. “Fire that mission at the northern most group now!” ordered Funk. He wanted to slow down that attack. He hoped to give Tatum the time needed to get his reserve company into position. He also needed to seal off any threat to 3/41’s rear area.

07240355z….vic Sittensen. The Russian tanks had just cleared the woods south of Kalbe and were deploying into company lines when the FASCAM landed. Small parachutes started to float down over the vehicles and as some landed on top of turrets, the explosions started. Chaos took over as vehicles turned left and right trying to avoid the minelets. As the carnage unfolded to their front, the tankers of A/2/66Ar pulled into the line with Bravo. The night sky lit up as the cannons of over 40 M1A1’s fired at the scrambling enemy vehicles….

Vic Hamersen…The eleven tanks and three M2’s Bradley’s of TF D 3/41 unleashed a murderous barrage of fire at the two approaching columns. The southern attack was mauled at 3000m’s before it even had a chance to deploy. They shifted fires to the center column that had dropped into the low ground in front of their positions. By the time the lead vehicles had reached the bridge, only a handful remained. It was a slaughter. The Russian return fire was inaccurate as they could only shoot at the muzzle flashes.

07240412z…As BMNT arrived over the battlefield, the light rain had turned into a downpour. Sporatic firing could still be heard along with muffled explosions as ammunition in the destroyed enemy vehicles continued to cook off. Reports were coming over all the command nets. Both LTC Tatum and Miller were on the Bde Cmd net letting Gen Funk know the status of their units and what was occurring within their sectors. Tatum was reporting no movement to his front. The attack in his sector was stopped within 1500m’s of the woods. All his Company’s except Alpha, needed resupply of Class III and V.

Miller’s TF Delta was reporting the enemy tank company occupying Helvesiek was stationary and not making any attempt to leave the town. He had ordered his Alpha Company to relieve the tankers in place. Once the positons were handed off, the tanks were to pull back into Hamersen to resupply.

Gen Funk walked over to his S2’s battle map. Fuller had tracked the battle with multiple overlays and as Funk flipped the multiple sheets of acetate back and forth, he realized he need to know what was to the east of the woods that sat between the L142 and B75 highways. Was there another enemy force approaching? He ordered his last remaining OH58 Aero Scout to recon west of Wisted, then south to Konigsmoor.

Gen Funk had just received the latest report from the Aero Scout confirming the absence of any enemy forces east of the large wooded area south of Kalbe. He called over his S3, Ltc Warden. Warden put down the mic and walked outside of the S3 track. “Sam, which forces do we have that can conduct a “Recon in Force” mission southeast of Kalbe within 45 minutes?” asked Funk. “Give me a second Sir” replied Warden as he reached back into the track. He grabbed a clipboard listing the location and status of each of the Brigades combat units. “B/4/41Inf and A/2/66Ar. Bravo is still in its hide position northwest of Sittensen along the A1. Alpha has completed the relief of B/2/66Ar north of the town and reported Redcon 1 ststus Green after the last fight. There’s a Scout Section here that can reach the Oste and check out the crossing sites the Russians used” said Warden as he pointed to each location on the generals map. “Get the Scouts moving Sam but keep them north of the river. Contact Miller and inform him that Bravo will be chopped to 2/66Ar for this operation effective now. I’m going higher to get approval” said Funk as he moved towards his Humvee.

The NORTHAG commander had been following the fight of the 2AD (Fwd). As soon as dawn broke, he had ordered a recon flight of F4 Phantoms to overfly the sector to confirm the reports he’d received of the battle. The first photo’s being transmitted over a satellite link showed a battlefield covered in smoke. The following ones clearly showed hundreds of vehicles littering the countryside between Sittensen and Helvesiek. “John, take a look at this” said the British General. “ The Yanks bloodied Ivan pretty bad. That’s at least a divisions worth of equipment burning in that sector. Get Gen Funk on the radio for me…..

07240445z....The message from NORTHAG confirmed his Aero Scouts reports. The Americans owned the battlefield. There was no appreciable enemy presence in the sectors Funk wanted to recon. Higher pressed upon him that "Preservation of Force" was the current mission, but the Recon in Force was approved.

Funk sketched some graphics on his map and handed them to Ltc Warden. "Give em time to issue their orders Sam, but we need to find the RAG/DAG.

0724052z-1000z....Throughout the next five hours, the two companies slowly advanced within their sectors and when required, destroyed equipment as they came upon it. A/2/66Ar had ambushed a enemy HQ's element travelling down the B75. B/4/41 Inf had hit another in Wisted. At 0724800z, the RAG/DAG was found......

End Game....A little over 2hrs into the battle, the game informed me that over 70% of the enemy had been destroyed and that since I had over a 4-1 advantage in victory points, the US forces controlled the battlefield. This level of victory prevented the Warsaw Pact from recovering any of its units that had "Fallen Out". That was a first for me....

The choice to continue the battle and proceed to locate the enemy Regimental/Divisional Artillery Groups was "gamey" at best, but I wanted to see how it would effect the next battle within the campaign.

My decision to start the battle at 0200 was to take advantage of the M1/M3's Thermal Imagery Sights (TIS) and the long fields of view offered from the defensive positions I was determined to occupy...if I could beat the enemy to them! The weather provided another advantage by limiting visibility to 500m-1500m's for most of the fight.

The initial setup locations for the US forces dictated that this would be a "Movement to Contact" mission. The unknown was where would the contact take place? The appearance of the Hinds answered that question......

The ranges that the US forces were engaging the enemy at proved to be so decisive that it literally became a turkey shoot (as evidenced by the bulk of the kill markers being 2000ms or more from the US positions) The enemy rarely had the opportunity to return fire.........

Only in Kalbe/Tiste/Sittensen did the enemy have a chance to engage, and it was there that the only serious threat ever developed.
