This has probably being answered but I'm asking anyways.

In SPWAW, each time I play, at a random time, the game goes back to windows by itself. I was wondering what causes this problem. Is there a fix, files to erase or add to prevent this?

Kinda annoying especially since my autosave seems not to work at all. How do you make this stupid autosave work anyways?

First try these things, remove all 'holder.txt' files from the folders within WAW, delete the steel.prfs file(another will be made when you restart, but you'll need to reset prefs), make sure any anti-virus programs are off. You may also, depending on amount of RAM, want to shut down any other programs running except for Explorer, and Systray. Also, you might want to check on how old your power supply is, and/or how hot the computer is getting, could be your fan is gone/going, and it's getting hot, or power supply going, but most often the first mentioned items cure a problem! Oh, if you haven't already, make a shortcut to start the game from the mech.exe found in the main WAW folder. Hope this helps?!

Nope, doesn't work.

And it's not a ram problem, I got nearly 400 ram, and my fan, power supply and everything else seems to be working fine, only SPWAW is doing this.

Ok, try this then also, download and use cacheman, it will manage memory etc, many folks here, including myself, found this program a great help! Also, and this is related, what are your vcache settings in the sys.ini? WAW uses almost 100% resources, so this may be a problem if the caches are off?! Mine recently had gotten messed up inadvertantly, while 'fiddling' and as a result, a few games would either not start at all(CTD), or would crash soon after starting, it was my vcache....

It still doesn't work, although it happens less frequently.

Also, I have a problem regarding the type of battle that I do in SPWAW. When I choose easy battle 1/2, well, I get an easy battle, although I don't choose this setting anymore, only used it once to see if it was a small battle (you'll understand later why.). When I choose medium battle, I get a medium battle, but when I choose a hard battle X2, the computer player only has two dozen tanks, and a bunch of infantry, one or two platoons of on-board artillery, and that's it.

I don't get X2 for my points to buy stuff and I could buy more units than he has and of the latest tech. Instead, I buy lots of artillery since I have my dudes that I have from the start of the campaign, don't need any other units.

Why is air support so rare btw? I only got air support in my huge WW2 campaing like three times, whether it's in Europe or in North Africa.

Are you having problems playing certain scenarios? Some of them have problems that have accumulated thru the version changes and need to have fixes done. Luck and the Last ... is one that I remember having a problem, along with the one with the Yugoslav military cadets. Other problems can be sounds, I had a problem with the old non-stereo sounds, one of the UK 2pdr sounds would crash the game for me, that has gone away since ver 5.3 and the current stereo sounds.

Try some of the current scenarios that were built with 7.1 and see if they play better for you.
thanks, John.

I'm not playing any scenarios, I'm playing the WWII campaign, well, if you can call that a campaign...

But for my problems with the battle size, what could be wrong and how to fix it? Because I choose a hard battle when defending or delaying, in otherwords, defending victory flags. I find the game too easy even though I give a 70 AI bonus. I need to have those hard battles again, I miss the time when the computer controled player would crash upon my mine fields, now, he can,t even get to them, he doesn't have enough units, hell, he doesn't even have the amount of units it has in a MEDIUM battle!!!

Can anyone help? I'm in 1944 now, and have lots of nice tanks and troops. :) I want to have a challenge with these guys, the only things that the computer player sends me is two dozen tanks with a dozen infantry sometimes and some priests and empty halftracks (lmao).

HI !

I have almost the same problem. I am playing SPWAW 7.1 on a WIN XP on a 2 mon. old computer. I haven´t played any battles yet , only senarios.
The thing that happens is that sometimes in a senario the games return to windows but still remains active . I can click on the icon on the taskbar , return to the game , continue and nothing is lost ! This only happens once per game.
I suspects that it might be an antivirus program that´s causing the problem but I am not sure. I have to check !
There is some scenarios, as John g also remembers, that crasch the ongoing game and you have to start from the beginning.

Joki, your problem sounds like Windows is doing something in the background. This causes SPWAW to sometimes Minimize. You need to play with everything else turned off. I have the problem you mentioned if I play late into the night on certain days of the month that I've set my antivirus to do a full scan.

Numeric overflow?

If you start with too large a force for the player then the comp will go over 32K and lose the first 32K of their force. This is unverified since I don't use large forces and every other integer in the game seems to max out at 32K (16 bit signed integer)

It will also happen when the player uses up most of the 200 formation or 400 unit slots. If your force is 350 units then that only leaves 50 for the ai.
thanks, John.

Thanks for the info.

Well, that's a bit ridiculous, it would be great if they could remove those limits, especially the ones about points, the amount of units and formations is understandable, map size, game engine, etc, but the points?

It began to happen when I was in 1943 when I was upgrading my tanks to the latest tech for the first time I think. Like before that, I was afraid of taking a hard battle because the computer player would come with a HUGE amount of troops and units and would blow its face up in my mine field and usually passed through it and I had to call some units that were doing nothing either north or south to prevent him from going through.

Now, if I was careless, I could simply remove the miefields when defending and rush in without any problems.

I finished my campaign (WWII) with all my tanks being jagdtigers except for a few exceptions like my Panther G Uhu who were my anti infantry tanks and my tanks who could see where others couldn't, man are these tanks deadly.

Panther G and Jagd Panther and tiger are the best. :)

Thanks again for replying.
