What is the most effective placement for smoke? Should I drop it in a hex between the enemy and my friendly unit, or is it more effective to drop the smoke directly on top of my own unit?

Smoke on units is effective but not as good a LOS blocker than having the smoke between target and shooter. If units are on the same elevation I go for between. If there is variation, I will smoke out my defending troops (as NATO).

Another smoke question if that's OK......how long (minutes/turns?) does the the typical smoke barrage remain in place and stay effective?

Thanks, good tactical and game mechanics' tip. I've typically used smoke on top of my units to assist them breaking contact but will try one hex in front of them moving forward.
