Yes, along with the inland base nearby those two. I know that Walker evacuated these bases. There could still be a fragment or two left, maybe vehicles that couldn't be airlifted.

I did forget to mention a minor operation to occur today. Hansa Bay, on New Guinea, is north of Lae. For a long time, it had over 100 fighters, and I left it alone, for the most part. The fighter estimate is now closer to 50, and there's been an AP docked there for a few days. I decided to sweep it heavily, use 2 SBD squadrons at Lae for naval attack, and send 2 heavy bomber squadrons to hit the airfield from Milne Bay.

This will be the first appearance of a P-47 squadron.

At Buna, the Marine Division that had been battling in the jungle coast hex to the north has now arrived and begins to ship out in small portions to Milne Bay, to be sent to Australia for rest and recuperation, then to the western side of New Guinea.

Another division that was at Lae has made it to Salamaua. It will be extracted in a similar manner.

Curious.

---

How good is the Recon at Kendari?

Is it specifically Recon or Naval Search ?

Are you confident they are CV or potentially mis-identified Tankers ? I have certainly seen CVs misidentified as xAK and Tankers before.

--

1) The KB leaves Kendari for some purpose which is evidently not to support a counter invasion at Buna or Lae. Perhaps just upgrades or damage repair. Fair enough.

2) However your opponent has largely abandoned a large (?? how large??) number of troops / units in the interior of New Guinea with no attempt to extract them. Not even by air... By digging into Rabul he allows you the robust development of forward bases / supply / fuel from which you will be able to stike deep into the pacific in 1944.

3) Your opponent does / must at least contest the invasions of Timor / DEI lest you get within Bomber range of supply / oil / fuel ports critical to Japan's economy...

--

I guess the CVs at Kendari could be where he chooses to draw the line - to keep you from Bomber range of i.e. Palembang.

Be wary of the counter punch !

Good luck and continued success...

I have been sending dedicated recon to Kendari, and it is in range of some naval search. I'm not 100% confident of the identification of CV's there, but lately, the intel has been fairly good. I'm 90% sure there are some carriers there. The detection levels on my subs in the area has skyrocketed also. A good indication of trouble in the area.

Walker has used KB close to the front to deter future landings. He did so in the Rabaul area for a long time. That was when I landed at Taberfane and Dobo, he reacted with everything over in that direction, and then I was able to land in force on New Guinea, taking the southern part of it. So he will counter-attack, like his retaking of Taberfane and Dobo. But I used that to my advantage in New Guinea. The weakness of my plan was that I landed a regiment at Taberfane and Dobo, and he countered with a division at each, retaking both bases. I committed everything big to New Guinea.

I do expect a vigorous counterattack with my next landings. I think that he has too. Honestly, I think that he needed to counter on Timor. Once my bases get big on Timor, the threat to his oilfields becomes very real.

Denpassar will be my most vulnerable landing, and I expect a response from Java there. But I am landing in force, and with my other base landings to the east of there, Walker will run into the problem that is a constant Japanese problem. He can't defend everywhere and the Allies can build huge bases where there was nothing when they landed.

I hope to keep up the pressure. I do expect a carrier battle soon. He could counter at Timor too. He may just need some time to prep some forces for that. But I'm there in divisional force. He won't retake that.

As you say, Macclan5, Walker has a plan, and will choose to draw the line somewhere. The question is just where will that be.

Today's action was all over Hansa Bay. On CAP was over 42 Tojos, 16 Oscars, and 15 Zeros. The numbers make me think that the Tojos were based at Hansa Bay, and the others were based either north or south of there, on ranged CAP.

16 F4Us sweep and losses are about equal, with 4 Corsairs lost.
21 P-40Ks sweep, and they get slaughtered, with 12 Warhawks lost downing no enemy planes.
B-17s and B-24s then arrive, doing minor damage to the airfield after helping to wear down the CAP.
Then a squadron of P-47s arrive, and do fairly well. There can be no doubt that the Tojo squadron has elite pilots.

15 SBDs then attack the small task force at Hansa Bay. No escort. The CAP is weak by this time. 2 SBDs are downed. The xAP that I had been seeing there turned out to really be an xAK. In this attack, a patrol boat is sunk and xAK Sinkoku Maru is heavily damaged.

Finally 25 SBDs with 15 Kittyhawk escorts arrive. CAP is light but a few attackers are lost. One more bomb hits the cargo ship, and Sinkoku Maru does sink.

Total air losses over Hansa Bay are 12 P-40Ks, 9 Kittyhawks, 4 F4Us, 4 P-47s, 3 B-17s, and 3 SBDs. Enemy losses are 11 Tojos, 8 Zeros, and 4 Oscars.

Many ground units start loading at Darwin. It's going to be a big operation. US carriers remain unseen. Many enemy carriers are again spotted at Kendari, but the recon is poor quality, and 0 fighters and 0 bombers are shown. Still not sure what is really there, and hoping for better information tomorrow.

I had hoped that my video card driver update would have solved my game crashing, but it occurred again. I only lost a little of my work this time, as I am saving very often. Frustrating. More information is on the Tech Support thread.

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

*************************************

Enemy units begin their retreat to Koepang. Walker may expect me to land there next, but I'll allow him to retreat there. He already has about 30,000 men there. It's a strong defense. But it is one that I am going to isolate. Nearby airbases will be able to keep the base out of action. For now, heavies from Australia do that job.

The huge armada will rendezvous with US carriers west of Darwin, skirt the coast to the west, then head northwest toward the targets. I'm hoping for surprise but not relying on it. Major landings will be at Denpassar and Waingapoe. Minor landings elsewhere. If surprise is achieved on the approach, the carriers will jump slightly ahead and hit Soerbaja's port. It's been awhile, but my last recon showed over 100 ships there.

And recon is an issue. I've done no recon at any of the invasion targets. I don't know how many troops I'll come up against. Intel has given me no information about units at these bases. They may be empty. Or not. But I'm coming. I predict fireworks.

And more fireworks if I'm not seen on the way in.

A friendly YMS sweeps all of the mines just spotted at newly conquered Dili.

Taberfane is bombarded by 3 US cruisers. Damage is minor. The 33rd Infantry Regiment and the 48th Division are confirmed to still be at Taberfane. Dili has had most of a division extracted, so it will be an easier target. I'm considering landing at Dobo and just isolating Taberfane.

B-25s bomb retreating enemy troops west of Dili. Minimal damage, but it helps keep them out of movement mode, and possibly reinforce the idea that Koepang is an invasion target soon.

Taberfane is hit by some heavy bombers, as is Dobo.

The big Allied armada west of Darwin is partially spotted. 2 of the troop carrying task forces are seen, including the big one set for Denpassar, consisting of many APAs. That will get Walker's attention, unfortunately. However, I also have smaller task forces that will split off and head to Broome and Derby. Maybe Walker will think that is what he saw. This assumes that my shipping completely disappears today, which may or may not occur. Emilys are out looking for them.

I have a number of smaller task forces heading towards Taberfane. I'm sweeping for mines, I just bombarded Taberfane, and a few ASW task forces are moving to the area. There is a dummy transport task force headed that way. It will then assume its intended movement and head out of the area to Townsville.

I do really want the armada to disappear. A big port raid on Soerbaja would be worthwhile risk. Those kind of raids, that could be a surprise, don't come around that often in the war. Once I land closer to Java, Soerbaja's shipping will run away. If it hasn't already.

Could you have caught his CVs/CVLs doing an upgrade at Kendari? Can't think why else he would park them there and offload the aircraft. CVs would be expensive bait for a CAP trap.

No, these carriers have been there for abot 5 days now, but not before. Before that, I saw BB Haruna, a few cruisers and some destroyers. This has to be a failure in recon and search. I hope to find out soon, with more recon and some at a lower altitude. I don't know if this idea is grounded in fact or hearsay, but I think that lower altitude recon is better at picking out the detail of a task force. Regardless, I'll have more planes looking now.

I have the next turn but it has to wait until later in the day.

Sub Sawfish fires on an xAK in a transport task force east of Borneo, but all torpedoes miss.

Heavies bomb Koepang. B-25s bomb retreating enemy west of Dili.

Today my invasion armada disappeared. Excellent! May my luck hold out for a few days. A huge flak unit from the Indian theater has left Perth and will be part of the Denpassar invasion. Invasion shipping for Derby and Broome are standing off those ports, waiting for the other shipping to clear the area. All ships are unseen today.

The "carriers" at Kendari probably are not carriers, in my opinion. I got a strong search result today, and show 2 BBs, 4 CAs, and 4 CVs, in that order, and 0F/0B/17. The ship composition has changed day to day, but seeing no fighters or bombers has not.

Minelaying subs will move to near Soerbaja, and will mine all 3 exits from the port at the appropriate time. Other subs will do the same around Kendari, mining the southern routes out of the port.

Lots of shipping left Rabaul today, heading north. Mostly small stuff, probably loaded with troops. I sense a general withdrawal by Walker, maybe with some type of new interior lines being drawn.

US ASW task forces boldly go north of Taberfane towards Boela. RO-62 is attacked but missed. I-35 takes moderate damage by depth charges.

36 Hellcats sweep Boela from Babar. It goes terribly. 12 Hellcats are lost, downing just 1 Tojo. We've found the Tojo squadron with ace pilots, again. These Hellcats were outmatched. I can go up against these guys with my P-38s, but their numbers are limited, and need to be conserved.

Sub Sturgeon spots a tanker convoy on the direct route from northern Borneo to Manila. 2 working torpedoes hit TK Samui Maru, a small tanker, probably sinking it.

My big invasion armada was spotted, to some degree. 3 task forces were seen: the AO task force, the big Fletcher DD task force, and the big APA task force heading to Denpassar. None of the carriers were seen. The spotted location was about 3 hexes north of Broome. I can only speculate what Walker is thinking he's seeing.

I will invade Derby with a small unit from a small task force, and drop paras on Broome today. I don't think this is really enough to make Walker think this corresponds to the ships he's seen. But I hope that my ships disappear today as they head northwest.

I still hope to make a surprise carrier strike at Soerbaja, but he may be evacuating the port after what little he has seen already. I am having minelaying subs drop mines on the 2 northern exits to Soerbaja today, but again, if he flees tonight, everything will escape. Mines will also be dropped southwest of Kendari. Other mines will be dropped southeast of Soerbaja, but not until tomorrow.

CV Victorious has arrived at Darwin and is refueling. It will move toward Koepang hoping to be seen. Then, when my armada's intentions are obvious, Victorious will go west and help cover some of the smaller landings.

Tense times. It's going to be difficult to land at so many locations. Most will go without carrier cover as things are now. I could stagger the landings with the carriers moving east to cover each landing.

Regardless, there will be plenty of time for Walker to react. Now we'll just wait and see what that reaction is going to be.

The DEI can be a very tough nut to crack because the IJ can stage interlocking airbases that support each other
over time one key problem is that your advance at sometime has to catch up in VP's and exceed by 2:1. The DEI offers much opportunity to increase the denominator of the equation
In my opinion, the DBB offers a special challenge to the IJ because the fact that refineries do not produce supplies .. supplies have to be brought in from supply centers ..
seems trivial until the fireworks start and more shipping is exposed to danger trying to supply bases in a regular scenario could be supplied by barges even ...

Denpassar and Koepang can base bombers. All of the other enemy bases in between are no bigger than size 1 AF. If they had been built up more, I wouldn't be thinking about this big jump to the west. Denpassar is going to be tough, being so close to Java. The others should be easier, if I can get the invasion shipping in and out safely, which is a big "if".

Assuming I don't lose my entire fleet of APAs in these invasion, an invasion of Dobo will quickly follow this operation.

I've lost my first LST. LST-454 is hit by 2 torpedoes from I-24. This LST group was unescorted temporarily, as I've been running them full speed to keep up with the armada, and the small escort was low on fuel and had broken off. The sub did fire guns at the LST, but missed. The torpedoes didn't. The LST had only supply on it.

With the armada, my Fletcher group ran over I-55 and got a good hit on it.

Troops unloaded at Derby. The enemy base is completely unoccupied, and will be captured today.

Near Ambon, sub Jack is run over by a couple of destroyers, and received one good hit. It now retires to Darwin.

The 2/9th Cav/Cdo Bn paratroopers drop on Broome. It is occupied by a remnant of the 16th Recon Rgt. The shock attack destroys 20 vehicles and takes the base. The remnant should be wiped out very quickly.

Any illusion of surprise with my armada was lost today. Walker had a number of subs guarding the transit area, and had plenty of search planes to spot my ships. I continue on. However, I decided to cancel the port attack on Soerbaja that I was hoping for. There won't be anything left in the port to hit tomorrow, if there was anything there to begin with. There is, however, a big task force at Soerbaja, and it looks a lot like the one that I had been watching for days at Kendari. Mixture of BBs, CAs, and CVs, with no fighters or bombers. In other words, no carriers.

Walker could keep them at Soerbaja and put a lot of CAP over them. I decide to go for it. 6 US carriers will move to two hexes south of Denpassar, and six hexes from Soerbaja, and hit any task forces in the area. Only one fighter squadron will escort. Another will LR CAP the trailing armada two hexes to the south. The rest will CAP the carriers.

A group of invasion shipping breaks off and heads ENE to set up south of Waingapoe. CV Victorious will make a full speed run to rendezvous and provide at least some CAP to these ships. Waingapoe shipping has a full infantry division plus support.

Another groups of ships breaks off and heads NE, to set up west of Waingapoe. It's heading for Memboro, next to Waingapoe, and Ruteng, NE of Waingapoe. This group of shipping has no CAP at all. Just hoping for the best here. These invasions are important, but of lesser importance than Waingapoe and Denpassar.

AO's break out of the pack and head back towards Broome.

Some important sub minelaying has taken place. North of Soerbaja is mined, as is southwest and north of Kendari. The base guarding the exit ESE of Soerbaja will be mined today.

Minelaying ships are in the armada. They'll go to work after bases have been captured.

Enemy carriers haven't been seen in a long time. Recent speculative spottings at Kendari were not carriers, in my opinion. I don't know where they are or if they will show up. SigInt has been no help here.

Fun times. Operations like this take many weeks to plan and put into motion. Tomorrow we approach the landing locations, with landings the next day. Plenty of time for a reaction. There can be no doubt that I am coming.

An enemy patrol boat finds my minefield NW of Soerbaja. The ones NE and ESE of Soerbaja are not spotted.

Near Mataram, US destroyers pound RO-102, leaving it on fire.

Passing through the straits ENE of Balikpapan, sub Sawfish spots a carrier task force, fires 4 torpedoes at CV Hiryu, but all miss. Hiryu is probably not alone, and probably headed south. If I'm lucky, I'll have a day to unload my troops.

Near Mataram, US destroyers attack I-22, and cause heavy damage to the sub.

Near Waingapoe, sub I-159 hits LST-335 with one torpedo. Later, the LST is targetted again, but the sub elects not to fire. The LST will survive if it is not engaged again. It now runs south by itself.

Near Mataram, I-24 spots a small cruiser task force guarding invasion shipping. CA Shropshire is hit by one torpedo. Damage is SYS 13/FLOT 32-29/ENG 1. The cruiser breaks off with a destroyer and runs south at high speed. It's already damaged. I choose to take more system damage to get it out of the danger area as quickly as possible.

Dobo is hit by a couple of heavy bomber squadrons, keeping the AF damage elevated.

CV Victorious launches 13 TBFs, which attack a lone xAK at Koepang. The morning strike gets one torpedo hit. An afternoon strike gets 4 more, sinking the cargo ship. It was not carrying troops. There was no CAP. Now most of the torpedoes on Victorious are gone.

The enemy launches a big naval strike out of Kendari. I'm lucky that it picked destroyers at Lautem as targets, rather than one of the many task forces near CV Victorious. 58 Zeros escort 18 Nells. CAP is 8 Kittyhawks, 15 P-40Ks, and 10 Corsairs. The CAP is tied up, for the most part. One torpedo strikes DD Beale, a Fletcher class destroyer. Losses are 18 Zeros and 6 Nells, for 2 Kittyhawks.

Near Mataram PG Hindustan spots I-22, and severely damages it with depth charges. The sub surfaces, and gets into a fight with LST-22. The LST gets many gun hits on the sub, but I-22 does fire torpedoes back at the LST just before sinking. But the torpedoes miss.

Sub Blackfish spots a big xAK task force east of Mindanao. Direction of movement is unknown. Torpedoes miss an AK.

At Broome, an attack by the 2/9th Cav/Cdo Battalion ejects the remnants of the 16th Recon Rgt out of the town. Broome and Derby are both liberated, with this tiny enemy remnant sitting in between them. I figure they'll starve soon enough.

Today is a very big day. All of the invasion targets will be invaded. US carriers will set up between Denpassar and Mataram. Recon of Denpassar shows just one unit, and a small one at that. But recon quality is poor. CV Victorious will setup between Waingapoe and Endeh. Ruteng and Memboro will also be invaded. All of the shipping over here is vulnerable.

Today I am striking back at Kendari. Walker used a lot of the fighters here for escort today, so maybe the CAP won't be so bad tomorrow. 3 P-38s squadrons moved to Lautem and will sweep Kendari. Lots of heavy bombers will hit Kendari's airfield and port.

Besides all the excitement of the invasions tomorrow, I decide to expedite the invasion of Dobo. Walker's search in that area is weak. My attempt at feinting this direction with a bunch of task forces failed because almost all of the ships weren't even seen, not even very close to Taberfane and Dobo. This doesn't guarantee safety, but tells me that this area isn't a priority for Walker right now. Troops will start to load for Dobo in 2 days. Dobo did have a divison when Walker recaptured it. It has, at most, 1/3 of a divison now. Taberfane is still heavily defended. I will isolate it. Both Taberfane and Dobo's airfields have been shut down and will remain that way.

But the fun is further west, with many bases being invaded tomorrow. KB could be storming south, with Hiryu's spotting during the night. Plus Soerbaja is loaded up with planes. Going to be an interesting day of combat tomorrow.

Those Brit CVs just don't carry enough torpedoes; it's kind of frustrating. I guess they were designed for operations close to the UK where they could rearm quickly and easily if needed?

Regarding Taberfane and Dobo, do they really matter anymore? If you have any success at all in the area just east of Java, then the islands much farther east become backwaters with little if any significance.

Looking forward to the fireworks next turn!

but then if you look at trying to transfer air squadrons from say Buna .... i.e. not on a ship.

I think the Taberfane and Dobo are probably very important as transit / logistic points ...even if not strategically required to "launch and attack"...

I would guess Darwin would work better as a transit node but maybe Dobo would be more direct, good point.

I consider Taberfane to be important because it has more than a division's worth of enemy troops. I'll take Dobo and isolate these troops. That's more important to me than the actual base.

Running a cruiser with 32 points of float damage at high speed won't cause just system damage - the float damage will become catastrophic!

Those Brit CVs just don't carry enough torpedoes; it's kind of frustrating. I guess they were designed for operations close to the UK where they could rearm quickly and easily if needed?

Looking forward to the fireworks next turn!

Not just Britain - the British Empire had bases scattered all over the world so their design for their ships included smaller fuel bunkers and ammo bunkers than most USN ships.

Kind of ironic that they didn't consider the danger or consequences if some of those bases were lost ...

Again no turn from Walker today. He says it will happen tomorrow. Bad luck that my invasions came during his busy part of the week.

I'm hoping for the best for running the Brit cruiser at full speed. I'm only doing it for one day. I expect some additional damage, but nothing catastrophic. If the FLOT damage was over 50, I wouldn't be running full speed. It's a risk, but so is taking my time to exit the danger area. And there are a lot of enemy subs prowling.

First the less consequential action.

Near Puerto Princesa, sub Tautog spots an xAK task force that also contains a AKV. Tautog gets a torpedo hit on xAK Hokumai Maru. There are ground troops on the ship. I am guessing that the troops are headed to Singapore. I recently got SigInt of a division headed that way. Just a guess here though.

During the night, 5 of the 6 invasion targets are invaded. It is notable that no troops unloaded at Denpassar, although I thought that they would. Watching the replay, I feared that I had mistakenly set the Denpassar task force to "Do Not Unload" when I saw this result. As it turned out, they started to unload in the afternoon.

US DMSs at Denpassar start to sweep mines at adjacent Banjoewangi, on the eastern tip of Java. This might have raised a bit of alarm for my opponent, seeing possible preparation for landing on Java itself. I noticed that there are now troops headed out of Soerbaja, headed to some beach hex, no doubt.

My big strikes at Kendari took place in the desired order, but results were not as good as expected. 3 squadrons of P-38s swept from Lautem, one squadron at a time. The first lost about 8 P-38s, downing about 6 Zeros. The second lost about 4 P-38s, shooting nothing down. The third downed about 8 Zeros for the loss of a couple of P-38s. I've been careful with the P-38s, using them in situations that I deemed critical. The pool of P-38Gs is empty. P-38Hs are being built, I think, but not all of these squadrons will use them. (Remember, this is PDU OFF).

Many B-24s then hit Kendari's airfield and port. An ACM was sunk in port. The airfield took moderate damage, and a handful of Bettys were destroyed on the ground.
