18 Jun 43 An enemy patrol boat finds my minefield NW of Soerbaja. The ones NE and ESE of Soerbaja are not spotted. Near Mataram, US destroyers pound RO-102, leaving it on fire. Passing through the straits ENE of Balikpapan, sub Sawfish spots a carrier task force, fires 4 torpedoes at CV Hiryu, but all miss. Hiryu is probably not alone, and probably headed south. If I'm lucky, I'll have a day to unload my troops. Near Mataram, US destroyers attack I-22, and cause heavy damage to the sub. Near Waingapoe, sub I-159 hits LST-335 with one torpedo. Later, the LST is targetted again, but the sub elects not to fire. The LST will survive if it is not engaged again. It now runs south by itself. Near Mataram, I-24 spots a small cruiser task force guarding invasion shipping. CA Shropshire is hit by one torpedo. Damage is SYS 13/FLOT 32-29/ENG 1. The cruiser breaks off with a destroyer and runs south at high speed. It's already damaged. I choose to take more system damage to get it out of the danger area as quickly as possible. Dobo is hit by a couple of heavy bomber squadrons, keeping the AF damage elevated. CV Victorious launches 13 TBFs, which attack a lone xAK at Koepang. The morning strike gets one torpedo hit. An afternoon strike gets 4 more, sinking the cargo ship. It was not carrying troops. There was no CAP. Now most of the torpedoes on Victorious are gone. The enemy launches a big naval strike out of Kendari. I'm lucky that it picked destroyers at Lautem as targets, rather than one of the many task forces near CV Victorious. 58 Zeros escort 18 Nells. CAP is 8 Kittyhawks, 15 P-40Ks, and 10 Corsairs. The CAP is tied up, for the most part. One torpedo strikes DD Beale, a Fletcher class destroyer. Losses are 18 Zeros and 6 Nells, for 2 Kittyhawks. Near Mataram PG Hindustan spots I-22, and severely damages it with depth charges. The sub surfaces, and gets into a fight with LST-22. The LST gets many gun hits on the sub, but I-22 does fire torpedoes back at the LST just before sinking. But the torpedoes miss. Sub Blackfish spots a big xAK task force east of Mindanao. Direction of movement is unknown. Torpedoes miss an AK. At Broome, an attack by the 2/9th Cav/Cdo Battalion ejects the remnants of the 16th Recon Rgt out of the town. Broome and Derby are both liberated, with this tiny enemy remnant sitting in between them. I figure they'll starve soon enough. Today is a very big day. All of the invasion targets will be invaded. US carriers will set up between Denpassar and Mataram. Recon of Denpassar shows just one unit, and a small one at that. But recon quality is poor. CV Victorious will setup between Waingapoe and Endeh. Ruteng and Memboro will also be invaded. All of the shipping over here is vulnerable. Today I am striking back at Kendari. Walker used a lot of the fighters here for escort today, so maybe the CAP won't be so bad tomorrow. 3 P-38s squadrons moved to Lautem and will sweep Kendari. Lots of heavy bombers will hit Kendari's airfield and port. Besides all the excitement of the invasions tomorrow, I decide to expedite the invasion of Dobo. Walker's search in that area is weak. My attempt at feinting this direction with a bunch of task forces failed because almost all of the ships weren't even seen, not even very close to Taberfane and Dobo. This doesn't guarantee safety, but tells me that this area isn't a priority for Walker right now. Troops will start to load for Dobo in 2 days. Dobo did have a divison when Walker recaptured it. It has, at most, 1/3 of a divison now. Taberfane is still heavily defended. I will isolate it. Both Taberfane and Dobo's airfields have been shut down and will remain that way. But the fun is further west, with many bases being invaded tomorrow. KB could be storming south, with Hiryu's spotting during the night. Plus Soerbaja is loaded up with planes. Going to be an interesting day of combat tomorrow.
