Status: offline 		I admit I used to have an unfounded and pointless aversion to audiobooks, but in the last couple of years, I've come to really like them (depending on the book and the narrator of course).

I personally find them perfect if I'm too tired to focus on a physical book or if I'm playing a slow-paced game. I recently listened to Bravo Two Zero by Andy McNabb whilst tinkering in the mission editor for Arma 3; they fit together surpringly well and ended up steering my custom mission towards pseudo-hostage-rescue-in-the-Gulf.

This month's Audible credit just came through, so I'm considering getting Command and Control by Eric Schlosser. I imagine that would work quite nicely with CMANO, or possibly Flashpoint Campaigns.

Do any of you listen to audiobooks?

Status: offline 		Audible, while not free has a good selection of titles. Ive listened to a lot of the WW2 books; D-day, Battle(Battle of the Bulge), Battle of Midway(my favorite, very well done).

Status: offline 		After losing my battle against small fonts in games, my eyes get tired around nine so I've been doing audiobooks. I've listened to Toobin's books on OJ and Patty Hearstas well as a bio of Genghis Khan.

Status: offline 		Back in the day when the Mrs. was just my fiance and lived 660 miles away and there were still cassette tapes nothing made those lonely late night miles across western Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle pass faster than a good Louis L'Amour book on casette.

I really like Audible; they've got generally high quality narrators, plus if you didn't like a book, you can just return it. I'll take a look at those WW2 books, thanks for the recommendations!

My partner is often reminding my to stop squinting and craning forward at the computer, I'm terrible for it! I like to think I have decent eyesight, but I get migraines quite easily and a calm audiobook is quite a good remedy.

That makes me nostalgic for the Terry Pratchet audiobooks I used to listen to on cassette, narrated by the great Tony Robinson.

Status: offline 		When I lived in DC I listened to audiobooks all the time during the commute to work--it beat the morning shockjocks. But now most of my available listening time is filled with other stuff and I think that the Audible books are quite expensive; I understand that hiring a quality reader is not cheap, but still...

Dan Carlin's Hardcore history is great. I loved the Ostfront series he did a few years ago, still available for a few bucks. His WW1 series was also a 5/5 rating from me.

I signed up to audible a few years ago and they are far too pushy for me, I still cant unsign properly from their mailing lists. I dont like their business model at all

Status: offline 		I use audio books in my high school English classes in the study of literature. It helps lower level students with their reading. My options are (a) Have them read at home. Most won't. (b) Have them read silently in class. Most won't. (c) Have me or students read out loud. I can't read out loud too long, and many students I teach struggle. It takes a long time. (d) Audio files. The audio files work nicely. We read faster and more students pay attention. I believe it helps some students improve their reading speed, which is critical for timed high stakes tests. I actually employ a mix of all the methods but rely most heavily on audio files. Some of the audio books are outstanding.

Which Battle of Midway is that you recommend?

I found Waterloo . Tom Clayton {/] very good.
plus max Hastings latest look at spies and covert ops WW2.

And, for civil war buffs, there is Shelby Footes 10,000, page masterpiece on there.

They go into Yamamoto's planning prior to Pearl. How Ernie King was a real ass, and Stanhope Ring was a jerk who couldn't lead his men, the planning for the Doolittle raid. How they broke the Japanese code. The battle of the Coral sea and the effects of that on Jap strategy.
I love the narrator for this one. Id love to have Shattered Sword as an audio book but this is the next best thing.

I fired up Battles in Italy last week when it was on sale out of nostalgia(I bought it on release day) and its just not fun to squint to play a game. WITPAE Im looking at you.
