Sort of a classic for those who enjoy this hobby. Sword Point too. These where first published as computer wargames became pretty good. For example Steel Panthers, WGCS- TANKS and Tiller's WW2 materials.

I liked Team Yankee a lot. I probably like Red Army and Chieftains (Bob Forrest-Web, available as ebook) better.

Here are some more suggestions when you've completed Team Yankee.

Thanks guys - looks like I have some reading to do :)
Still waiting though for the full new version of the game on Steam before jumping into it.
Any day now...
From what I understood from the review the Team Yankee book is revised after gaining access to Soviet archives.

I re-read "Red Storm Rising" this summer, probably the first re-read since it came out. Oh, at the time I probably read it a couple of times over. Still, was a bit of a surprise how little land combat the book actually has. A shame really, as the book is absolutely rocking through those few chapters! No wonder those memories stuck in

Team Yankee seems botched up as a Kindle edition, too bad. I'll try Chieftains next then

I'm leaning towards Team Yankee revised version first. Anyone know if the iOS/iBook version works better than Kindle?

So here goes, at USD 4.99 + tax this was a no brainer to buy. You can actually get a look at the first two chapters via Amazon, and true enough, the book fires up very spiritedly.

The first third provides for very nice fiction, after which the author unfortunately gets lost himself in the chaos and utter madness of the modern(ish) battlefield he paints. Characters come, with a rich introduction to their civil life, only to be almnost forgotten for a while, then haphazardly visited again with not much sense in why they were introduced in first place. Should he have concentrated on the main protagonist alone, I would have scored it higher, but as it is, a solid "C" it is.

Oh well, nothing ventured nothing gained. And it killed a few days from my waiting list on the "Blood and Bridges" boardgame of the Lock'n Load "World at War'85" series. Brits fighting the Soviets that game too

Do et me know if you find out, or went for it anyway. The Kindle edition seems unreadable, based on the feedback.

I bought it yesterday (139 SEK, about 14 USD) on iBooks and some 30 pages into it, it looks as it should.

there was also a comic adaptation of Team Yankee back in the late 80s that wasn't too bad

I always thought Team Yankee and Red Army were nice foils to one another. One where everything went the WP's way and the other where everything fell NATO's way.
'
Air Battle Central Europe is a must read. Nice nuts and bolts approach with the actual pilots telling how they would do their jobs in a hot war

Does anyone know if there is a book on this topic that is written like a hypothetical history book and/or description of how events could have panned out, rather than a work of fiction? Readin Team Yankee now and find it to be rather poorly written from a litreray standpoint :(

Closest to that would probably be Hackett's stuff.

Just a quick follow up, having finished reading the Kindle edition. I had put buying this off quite a few time due to Amazon.com reviews such as:

3.0 out of 5 stars

Read the hardcover or paperback version. This digital version is Butchered.

ByRobert J. Longon June 24, 2015
Format: Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read this book in paperback when it first came out and enjoyed it. However, the digital version is simply butchered.
The novel was not scanned and digitized, it was transcribed with grammatical errors galore.
For those thinking of getting the kindle version be advised that words like "down" has been replaced with clown. And "thing" replaced with thong.

Of all digital books, this one has been through a meat grinder and I would recommend spending the time with the printed version than the digital version.

Happy to report this is not true with the current version available. So if you have an idle tenner and have not read this yet, recommended action! Tank action especially is very nicely written, while the infantry action seems to be a bit high with John-Wayne-stuff, at least based on the infantry training I took while serving as Mot Arty guy. But a recommended read regardless

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Tom Clancy's Armored Cav. It is a bit dated, but it covers what an Armored Cavalry Regiment would've looked like during the Red Storm period quite nicely. It also has a good account of the Battle of 73 Easting, well worth the read.

Has anyone here read The Effect series by Harvey Black? Opening book is available for Kindle for a fiver, might as well buy it but thought to ask first.

Thanks Jim, just what I was hoping, and pointers to further fiction as well! Seems not perfect, but it's there and worth to have a look at least

Time to resurrect this one.

I actually went and ordered this, cost a bit, but I thought why not. Could have asked for impressions, first, of course. But since there was a thumbs up at Amazon.com by a nick called "Mad Russian"; I thought that's all I need

Anyone's read this?

The actual full name of the book is: "NATO under attack - Why the Western Alliance can fight outnumbered and win in Central Europe without nuclear weapons." From 1984. By a certain Von Mellenthin et al.

'First Clash' by Kenneth Macksey is really worth the read. Written by a Canadian Army officer as a narrative training aid for junior officers in 1985, it accurately reflects Canadian Army and Soviet Army ORBAT and doctrine in a well-written and enjoyable novel (from memory). I certainly rate it as more realistic than Team Yankee and features increasingly dated Canadian equipment of the period, such as Lynx C&R, Leopard C1 and M113. Based on what I know of upcoming Southern Storm, it could be quite a relevant read with the introduction of Canada and 4 CMBG.

Thanks for the tip, there were a good few second hand copies available at Amazon UK, ordered one

Glad I inspired you to take a look at it. I seem to remember it ending fairly abruptly, but a number of these Cold War gone hot titles do (Red Army springs to mind). I guess it’s hard to end a World War Three novel neatly if you want to avoid a nuclear Armageddon...
