ORIGINAL: Dysta And I was too precautious of Guardian Fleet's AA Defense as I used full-blown SEAD mode, as well as I messed up with the tanker to stretch JH-7 for ARM strike. The Kilo is pretty much a SSN bait though, so I don't bring it against the fleet, instead to have it protected with Y-8 ASW. But like you said, no torpedo can dive deep enough to it. Type 903 oiler dragged the CSG to the pathetically low speed, even I set the formation speed in Flank. Too late to stop the Guardian bombarding the first reef, but in the end it becomes a gun exchange, as hostile is so delicately pinpointing 052D first. All escorts sunk except the carrier and oiler, but the Guardian also torn badly and immobilized, only 2 frigates surrounded Liaoning. This is the result I got from pre-planned mission only, only launch the attack by turn the Guardian fleet into hostile manually once they get into the zone. Minus 4000 for PLAN, but hey, neither the Guardian fleet is happy to see all the broken ships while hopelessly watching Liaoning is still floating. Interesting outcome. I have not used any pre-planned missions, though. And yes, the JH-7As need to be managed well. In reality and IIRC in the DB, they do not have IFR capability, so the H-6U tankers werent of much use for them anyway (but they helped me maintain air-superiority against the Vietnamese Su-27SK Flankers by extending the patrol time for my surprisingly capable PL-12 equipped J-8F). In my scenario, none of my core-members of my surface combattants were sunk as I didnt do any UNREP and just steamed with 30 knots down towards the enemy, ignoring my 903 AOR, as he limbed behind with 19 knots. Though, I lost both of my 056s as they werent fast enough to get into the protective umbrella of my Liaoning CBG, hence were sunk by AShMs - but not before launching their own first. In the end, I managed to sink the TF Guardian with no major losses myself. A key really is not to do UNREP before not sinking the TF Guardian and shooting down most AShM capable warplanes, because all members of the SAG will assemble around the AOR, but your carrier wont: And he will continue down with 30 knots on his own, without any protection; just asking for crap going down on him! Also, make sure to ToT all your available anti-ship strike assets: It is really a bit tricky, with the JH-7As being so short-legged, but I have simple set them to "ignore Bingo fuel", assigned them to Woody Island base and controled them manually by forcing them down to engage the TF-Guardian with their AS-17s when they still werent hostile to me (same works with the other non-carrier air-assets as well - make sure to send them out manually, and then assign to Woody Island Airstrip for the return-trip). By that time, your YJ-12 equipped H-6Gs should have engaged at stand-off range. Launch all available ship-borne missiles as well when you feel that all AShMs might arrive at roughly the same time. And dont forget your four J-15S embarked on the Liaoning, as their eight extra YJ-83s might be the straw to break the camel's back. But yeah, if your playthrough has the enemy being assigned an SSN, you are basically screwed, as you have no weapon to deal with him, even if you detect him. In my second playthrough, I had the fortune to get a Type 093 Shang-class SSN, while the enemy gets two Archer-class SSKs. While they managed to destroy two of my Platforms, my SSN and Helicopters/MPAs dealt with them quickly, giving me a Marginal Victory at the end. It was a hard fight, as I lost the majority of my Airforce in exchange for the total wipeout of the enemy's - but it was a rewarding fight. On another little nitpick I have just now realized is that the Y-8Q ASW-MPA doesnt seem to have a long range surface search radar?! This is weird, since one of the selling points of this new MPA in PLANAF service is its long range search radar with wide field of view. In the DB, it only has a 25 miles 1970s generic search radar... Was this on purpose (due to lack of evidence/data) or an othersight? Pretty weird that China would want an MPA that doesnt even have a radar comparable with the P-3 Orion's AN/APS-115 surface search radar of the late 1970s. What I've learned after playing this scenario: Range means everything. No IFR = No tactical flexibility and much reduced strike power. Makes me understand why the PLANAF wants the JH-7B a badly, as it has IFR that their predecessors dont have. Also, If I had functioning Subi/Mischief/Fiery Cross Reef Airbases in this scenario, the mission would have become much easier for me, as they truly extend my strike radius up to the Strait of Malacca (and they wouldnt have been "sunk" by torpedoes as well lol). Now, the Chinese efforts in the SCS island building makes entirely sense from the tactical point of view.
