Purchased on Steam last week, but have yet to be able to get Command to run. The main menu opens, but when the 'Play' button is clicked, it goes away and thinks for a couple seconds and then comes back to the menu. No message, no nothing. Command version is 1.11 SR1, OS is Windows 10. I've done everything i could find on the boards (pre-reqs, video drivers are updated, verify local cache, run as admin, delete command.ini)...nada. I'm really disappointed because I've heard such good things about this. Any help, please?

Hi,

Can you go through this sequence in greater detail please. What _exactly_ are you doing.

From your current description it appears like a "missing DB version" problem. Which scenario are you trying to run, which _version_ of the scenario (if it's a community scenario, do you have the most recent version of the community pack?). The more we know, the better guess we can make.

Thanks.

In Steam Library, double-click 'Command: Modern Air/Naval Operations WOTY' line. This brings up a dialog box. On the left hand side is a blurb for the 'you may also like' game de jour, then at the bottom buttons labeled 'Forums', Store', 'Patch Notes', 'Catalogue', 'Support', and 'EULA'. One the right hand side is a picture of a ship firing a missile as background for 3 more buttons, labeled 'Play Command Modern Air Naval Operations', Game Manual' and 'Command LIVE'.

When i press the button labeled 'Play Command Modern Air Naval Operations', the dialog box disappears for 5-10 seconds, then the dialog box comes back; no game.

Try throwing steam into 1) connected mode if you are in disconnected mode and
If you're in connected mode, try toggling to disconnected steam client. I had this problem and it seems to be intermittent, but I found that it has to do with steam and its connection status.

I navigated Steam->Go Offline, and clicked the 'Restart in offline mode' button. Tried starting Command. Same result, simply returned to the dialog box. Then navigated Steam=>Go Online, and clicked the 'Restart in online mode' button. Tried starting Command. Same result, return to the dialog box.

FWIW, I did notice that the return to the dialog box took longer in offline mode than it did in online mode.

Verify Integrity of Game Cache
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2037-QEUH-3335

and disable the steam overlay and see if that helps

quote:

also where did you get your version of windows 10 from?

as beta versions may not be supported,

including Insider Preview versions of Windows 10: Threshold 2 fast track or fast ring releases as beta products are for trials and testing only, and are not full blown windows for release use, any bugs or driver errors can't be supported as no up to date drivers will be released or fully supported so any amount of errors can be with them, please use a full RTM (released to manufacturers) version of windows, where full support will be given.

this is only my opinion, where as the game developer may have an other opinion

In the Logs sub-directory under the Steam install for Command (C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\Command... or wherever your Steam apps install), is there an ExceptionLog.txt?

Verified integrity of game cache - no problems found, but game still doesn't run. Disabled Steam overlay - same story.

There is no ExceptionLog.txt file in the Logs sub-directory. The last file date in there is from 7 months ago, which is the last time I was able to get the game to run.

Windows 10 came installed on this computer, so it isn't a beta release version.

Verified game cache; files are all good but game still does not load. I have had Steam overlay disabled from the git-go. However, tried enabling (game does not load) then re-disabling (game does not load).

The 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Command Modern Air Naval Operations\Logs' directory is empty. This game has never run.

I got Windows 10 from Micro$oft; it is not a beta. Windows 10 Pro, Version 1511.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_10_version_history

yes sorry some aren't beta versions, just older versions that have been surpassed by later fixed versions,

preview versions aren't supported same as beta ones (slow ring , fast rings ones etc)

the most stable and CB current branch are the ones which are the most stable and best to have installed.

looking at error logs provided, if you have issues with a given game, there are reasons, while most think it's game related, most of the time it's driver or user error, with what apps are pre loaded at start up the conflict with the game and stop it from running,

Problem signature:

P1: Command.exe

Problem signature:

P1: SkyrimLauncher.exe

Problem signature:

P1: unspecified

P2: HardeningTelemetry

P3: HardeningTelemetryDisableAV

the more error's in a given log, the more in looks like something else is conflicting with a given pc, so hardware / software conflict or one of the most common ones, user error.

1, How to get a DxDiag report file:

1. Click on "START" (on Windows 8 press “Windows key” and the “R” key at the same time)
2. Click "run" (skip this step on Windows 8 )
3. Type in "dxdiag" and click "OK"
4. Check through the tabs and perform all tests
5. Click "Save all Information..." and save the text file to a location of your choice

We prefer that DxDiag files be posted as message attachments (zip) rather than pasted into the body of the post.

2/ add the exe of the game to your Anti Virus and firewall program, to make sure check the logs of these to see if it was one if any of them was to blame.

3/ That usually means a 3rd party program, like an Internet security programs, is or could be interfering with the game or update installation.

4/ run the game from a admin account and use full admin permissions.

5/ please make sure all game pre requisite are installed with the game, even if you think or fully know there are already installed, it will only over write, and it may be that you have a older or newer version of these where as the game in question may need a certain version.

6/ please make sure you are running the latest game version and O/S if windows 10 and have up to date drivers installed on your pc,

7/ If you have the original version. So you'll need to update it from the Internet.
Please note that you'll only need the last update, as the updates are comprehensive. (not needed with steam)

things to try to get a given game, not just this one from working, correctly

run as admin on the install, run as admin on playing, run from a admin account, not a users account on a shared works pc, as you won't have full privileges and permissions and the game could or will fail.

add the game exe processors to your anti virus and firewall, running as admin on install does this, unless you use a really poor security setup, which then you have to add manually, see 2 & 3 above.

if all else fails, try selective start up or safe mode, which by default disables almost all startup and background programs and apps you have installed, and gives you a basic setup and clean start for you to try a given game, this way you can see what is or could be conflicting a given game from working.

if 1000 games+ and more are sold and only a selective number of people have a given issues with a install or running, it's normally a given factor that stops them from running the game or app or program, 99% of the time it's either driver or permissions either from either antivirus or firewalls or combo's of both.

looking at 2 & 3 above sorts these out, as if you've checked yours and it's empty, your log files, it wasn't that so then move on to try selective start up or safe mode with a clean start up and see what else is stopping it.

vykingz, if you need any help with any of above, just pm or ask it here, and i'll try and talk you through it, btw what security package do you use ie have installed on windows? the default one, or a different one?

i'm not staff, just a volunteer, but i ask as most of the time it's odd and poorly written packages that stop most games from running, comodo internet security, McAfee, Avira, Avast, AVG & Bitdefender Internet Security all on ones types just to name a few, don't tend to be great, while others are more game friendly, with addon's like Gamer Mode etc.

Given both are Win10 and if they are clean win10 installs, they may need to load missing library files that are on most win7 machines. We hit a similar snag with Red Storm the MS VC 2010 redist package was missing. You may wish to look into something like that.

Sigh; i hate the way real life distracts from gaming...:}

zakblood, thanks for the offer, i may take you up on that if i hit a snag going trough these. I use AVG for my antivirus.

Capn Darwin, i did check the 'MS VC 2010 redist' packages in a prior iteration, but will again.

it's just one's and zero's right, can't be that hard....:}

You may need to install those redist packages directly, using admin privs too.

Hi gents,

got down to the 'start in Safe mode' option, and when I start Command in Safe mode, i get a dialog box saying 'A new guard page for the stack cannot be created'. Wasn't able to glean much from Professor Google, but what i did find points to using a dotnet_cleanup tool to totally uninstall dot net, then reinstalling the full dotnet 4.0.

So before embarking on what sounds like a pretty major deal, thought i would get a quick reality check from the assembled gurus.

Thoughts?

YEEEEAAAAAAAAH BUDDY! Checked the Event Viewer prior to uninstalling and such, and noticed an error log. Researching what i found there led me to checking Windows compatibility settings on the executable, and it had been set to W98 sometime during a prior troubleshooting session. Command works now, and boy is it gorgeous. :}

I know you fixed your problem, but 9/10 times a problem with steam can be solved by deleting clientregistry.blob and restarting.
