Having caught up on my old scen backlog, I've finally begun to unzip the uberzips from Redleg's monthly site update - starting with Septerber 2k2 - so, I still have a backlog, as you can see. Decided I'd AAR them up, and post, for your reading enjoyment.

AAR: Gebirgsjager Battalion 202 (The Lost Battaltion) by Redleg

Date: October 24, 1944
Time: 1000
Location: Vosges Mountains, France

Played as the US, with all options, except C+C on.

Visibility: 25, but rain and terrain will limit that.

Map: Typical mountain map, mostly hills, quite a few clumps of trees.

Mission: I have three rifle companies of the US 7th Regiment. I need to clear a ridge line of elements of the German 202nd Mountain Battalion.

The plan: Advance, find them, kill them. I'm going to try to clear the ridge north to south, to be able to max firepower and have the ability to pull battered squads back without losing momentum.

Turn 1: We advance, scouts come under harrassing fire. We hit the ridge with arty and mortars, and will keep doing so as long as ammo and contact holds up.

Turn 2: More harrassing fire. No sign of the enemy yet.

Turn 3: Contact up and down the line, on both the north and south flanks. So far, it's minor skirmishing.

Turn 4: We advance along most of the line, and press in on the north, trying to get infantry close enough to take out the known enemy units. Arty is laying into them as well as the north side of the ridge. One of my MG teams to the south gets badly shot up.

Turn 5: We push back the two enemy units we've been skirmishing with and locate others. We'll hit them with mortars, too, and work on supressing them until we can get close and overrun. German defensive fire is increasing, but, it's not hurting us.

Turn 6: We knock out a MG team and identify more enemy positions. Scouts are doing a good job. Enemy harrassing defensive fire continues.

Turn 7: We lose a scout team and the attack bogs for a moment, due to the lead US squads being unable to take fire without bailing. But, as more of them get into the fight, that won't matter. German defensive fire is starting to become annoying.

Turn 8: We make progress in the north, where 1 enemy squad is destoyed and four more pushed back.

**At the one-third point, I'm pleased. The advance is slow, but constant, and I have a good feel for how the enemy is deployed. As most of my troops aren't in the fight yet, I think that things will soon pick up for the US 7th Regiment and we'll sweep the enemy.***

Turn 9: We lose a scout team. They lose a squad and two more are pushed back. We're on the ridge. German defensive fire - thanks to mortar suppression - is limited, but deadly. For green squads, they shoot well.

Turn 10: We push onto the ridge in force. An enemy squad is down, more pushed back. The breakthrough may be starting.

Turn 11: We take the north side of the ridge and start sweeping south, hopefully flanking the German positions. A security platoon is moving up to hold the cleared area. Defensive fire gets a recon patrol.

Turn 12: We drive a squad back along the center of the ridge. The center of my own advance is stalled by fierce resistance. On the south, a flanking platoon pushes at an enemy platoon in heavy fighting. We lose a full 12 man squad to a single MG burst! How come mine never do that???

Turn 13: We finish two squads and lose a recon team, as the center of the ridgeline opens up to our advance. Three squads are holding up the advance in the center, but they'll soon be surrounded. To the south, we skirmish with the enemy.

Turn 14: We kill a squad and push others back as the center of the ridge starts to fall to us. We'll bypass the three pesky squads, surrounding them, and bypassing, and killing if they try to break out. In fact, at this point my main advance is switching over to a pinning force, as the men on the ridge can cut off all the forward German defenders, and, if they fall back, to the east, I can press them.

Turn 15: We kill another squad and take the next objective cluster. We lose another squad - this time to a surrender. It retreated into an enemy hex, and the enemy hit the hex with MG and rifle fire - and never hit Germans. How come the AI never gets blue on blue fire? :)

***At the two thirds point, I'm pleased. Half the ridge is mine, most of the enemy is forward deployed, and even with the bad luck losses of two squads, I feel we're doing well. The enemy's been flanked and is being rolled up, and I can easily exploit any collapses.***

Turn 16: We kill a MG team. Enemy resistance starting to stiffen once more.

Turn 17: We kill another squad as we sweep down the ridge. An enemy platoon from the east is attacking towards the north side of the ridge, but my security platoon should handle them.

Turn 18: Turns out it's two enemy platoon counterattacking, but, still, no sweat. We lose an MG team and take out a squad as well as take the rest of the center of the ridge.

Turn 19: We advance. German forward squads start to fall back.

Turn 20: We lose a squad, but kill three of thiers, and an MG 42 team. Two of the dead ones were trying to pull back, so that part of the plan is working.

Turn 21: We lose another recon team, but take out 3 more squads and another MG42 team.

Turn 22: We kill two more squads and take part of the southern end of the ridge. Both sides lose a squad on the last German turn.

Results: US DV, 7524 to 1400, much to my suprise, as, a good half dozen VHs were still in German hands. I lost 151 men, they lost 301.

Grade: A-. Overall, a very good scen, as Redleg's tend to be. The only ding, and it's a minor one, is that the MGs and scouts could be deployed better. Very fun and nice non armor scenario, and well worth the time to play. I'd have liked a turn or two mre, just to get the rest of the ridge, but again, that's a minor thing.
