My wife did her residency in Wisconsin. Veterinary residents earned extra money checking for adulteration of cow udders at local and regional dairy auctions. Prior to their intercession / intervention, upwards of 50% of cows would have air added to their udders to 'puff them up' and make them look more engorged (and by extension, more productive).

So, my belizarded friend, even the pictured species you've provided is beset with 'fake ones'.

Are there any studies on how that practice affects the cow's self esteem?

No need to study. They start groaning and bellowing because it is painful and they can't milk themselves. The bellowing translates to "Get your ass over here and milk me, STAT".

No, I mean the 'enhancement' practice.

Well, no. But for starters, they don't like being referred to as 'cows'. Too unseemly and common. "Bovidae lactation engineers" is the term du jour.

Just took a little video of a Cooper's Hawk feeding on something in my backyard. A dove I think. I'll investigate later, she's still at it.

Ha Ha.

She's eyeing a squirrel who hasn't spotted her yet. He just spotted her and ran off. She made no move, she's full.

Here she is sitting on a cedar 4x4, part of a planter. That's arugula around her. She just had her Thanksgiving dinner and popped some buttons off and is just pooped.

This is easy. Orange is named after the orange.

Thank you for sharing. Really nice picture of the Cooper's Hawk.

If you do not mind me asking. How do you identify the bird as female?

Was going to ask that since coloring is the same for this species. The male is smaller, slender than the female who is bigger, bulkier.

I can't really. I'd need to know the age. Then I'd have to measure. Now with the 4x4 (3.5") I can sorta extrapolate the size. Females are substantially larger than males. She's big. That's how.

Here's another pic. You can just see the rounded tips of her tail feathers. That's the main distinguishing characteristic of the Cooper's that tells you it's not a Sharp-Shinned Hawk.

The squirrels got tired of waiting for her to leave, so they started foraging again.

Flew off shortly after this. I went out and couldn't find any remains of whatever she was feeding on.

The diameter of that pipe is 1.25 inches. I calculate from that that this bird is 15 inches long which would mean it is most likely a he, not a her. According to the Wiki an adult female should be between 17 and 20 inches. Mea culpa (my bad).
