For the folks in the Southeast: A real Higgins PT Boat has been restored and is due to be launched into Lake Ponchatrain near New Orleans soon. (For us Yankees there's the PT Boat Museum in Fall River, MA)

Can't seem to save/paste the link so check out the National WWII Museum website

I was stationed on a WWII destroyer from '75-'79 in Newport R.I. I used to go with my buddy to Battleship Cove in Fall River and help him take parts off the Massachusetts. We would take stuff like feed pumps, lube oil pumps, etc. The only thing they wanted us to do was put the broken/non-working pump in it's place so as to maintain the piping integrity. We would have to red tag the pump so someone else would no it was broken and not waste their time taking it. The cool part was, we had access to parts of the ship that is off limits to everyday visitors.

I was on the USCGC Bibb homeported in New Bedford, MA (77-79). We got parts for our 5"/38cal from the USS Massachusetts. Good thing nobody ever thought about recommissioning that BB in the 80's I guess.

My first ship was USS Newman K. Perry (DD-883), commissioned in August 1945. It was a Gearing class and later was FRAMed. I spent many hours inside a 5"/38, that was my General Quarters station. I started off as powderman in the upper handling room, then moved up into the mount as a hot caseman (that was fun), then as trainer. My last GQ station on that ship was mount captain for mount 52. That was the 5"/38 on the fantail.
