The Battle for Burma

February 3, 1943

Western China

El Lobo is pushing from one hex West of Paoshan toward the Burma Border with the following Japanese ground forces (1,175 total Assault Value):

6th Division
22nd Division
39th Division
3rd Tank Division
7th Ind. Tank Bde.

The Allies have the following ground forces one hex West of Paoshan (211 total Assault Value):

77th Chindit Bde.
11th Chindit Bde.
87th Mountain Rgt.
70th Coast AA Rgt.

The following Allied ground forces are on the move to reinforce the Allied ground forces one hex West of Paoshan (871 total Assault Value):

25th Inf./A Division
268th Motorized Bde.
112th USA BF
193rd Tank Bn.
50th Indian Para Bde.
27th Infantry Division
29th British Bde.

The Allies believe that the above Allied units will begin to arrive in time to prevent the Japanese from crossing the China-Burma Border into Burma.

Note: The 25th Inf./A Division will move into Lashio after the balance of the above Allied ground forces arrive to defend the China/Burma Border.

Japanese Ground Forces in Burma

The Japanese have the following ground forces in Burma:

Unit(s) Location

13 Shwebo
8 Mandalay
10 Lashio
17 Magwe
3 Meiktila
7 Ramree Island
6 1 hex East of Ramree Island
4 Taung Gyi
4 1 hex Northwest of Prome
1 1 hex Northeast of Toungoo
9 Prome
8 Toungoo

90 Total Known Units

Intelligence indicates the following Japanese troops are loading on transports bound for Rangoon:

10/Guards Mixed Bde.
19/Guards Mixed Bde.
20/Guards Mixed Bde.
25/Guards Mixed Bde.
9/23 Mixed Ind. Bde.
2/3 Ind. Mt. Gun Rgt.
2/38 JAAF AF Bn.
Yokosuka 1st SNLF
22nd Air Flotilla

Lashio

The following Allied ground forces that presently surround Lashio have been ordered to move into Lashio (647 total Assault Value):

24th Inf./A Division
24th Inf./B Division
24th Inf./C Division
25th Inf./B Division
25th Inf./C Division
1st Medium ART Rgt.
2nd Medium ART Rgt.
78th Cst. AA Rgt.

The following Allied ground forces are on the move with orders to enter Lashio ( 875 total Assault Value):

20th Indian Division
9th Australian Division
118th USAAF BF

Surrounding Five North-Central Burma Bases

Allied ground forces continue to move to complete surrounding the five North-Central Burma Bases of Shwebo, Mandalay, Meiktila, Magwe, and Taung Gyi.

Upon completion of surrounding these five bases in approximately two weeks, these five bases will be trapped and cut-off from the Southern Burma Bases of Prome, Toungoo, Bassein, Rangoon, Pegu, and Moulmeim.

As an inner-part of cutting-off these North-Central cities form the South, the 6th and 7th Australian Divisions with armor support will move into the hex directly West of Mandalay and into Meiktila (thereby cutting off Magwe supply to Mandalay and Shwebo).

One Hex East of Ramree Island

The Allied ground forces located one hex East of Ramree Island have a total Assault Value of 2,389.

These Allied ground forces along with the Allied ground forces surrounding this location will continue to apply pressure in an attempt to hold Japanese ground forces South of Magwe and Taung Gyi in place (i.e., discourage EL Lobo from ordering Southern Japanese ground forces from attempting to break-through and reinforce the five North-Central bases).

Allied Air Bases in Southeast India and Burma

In preparation for an Allied Bombing Campaign in Burma, the Allies have built up the air bases at the following Southeastern India and Burma bases:

INDIA

AAR Format Change

For fourteen months I have cut-and pasted numerous combat actions from the Combat Reports. As the war increases in heat, the Combat Reports are becoming longer and longer. I think that to continue to cut and paste each combat action from the Combat Reports might become quite a chore for me and be rather boring for The War College.

Accordingly, I am going to change the format of The War College AAR.

In the future, I intend to keep The War College posted as to the progress of the war by commenting on events that I deem interesting or significant. Infrequently, when prudent, I will cut-and paste from the Combat Report.

Best Regards,

-Terry

Adak Island

PB Shonan Maru #1 hit an Allied mine near Adak Island and incurred heavy damage.

Burma

Intelligence suggests that El Lobo is sending the additional Japanese ground forces to Rangoon:

2/Guards Mixed Brigade
8/Guards Mixed Brigade
24/Guards Mixed Brigade
27/Guards Mixed Brigade

CHINA

Japanese Bomb Chengtu and Chungking

As usual, El Lobo's bombers continue to pound my poor Chinese. The vast majority of these Japanese airstrikes are directed at Chengtu and Chungking.

Japanese Deliberate Attack Near Chungking

The 70th Chinese Corps repels Japan's 61st Infantry Brigade, 13th Ind. Mixed Brigade, and 63rd/A Division.

Japanese Deliberate Attack Near Nanyang

The 88th Chinese Corps repels Japan's 9th RGC Route Brigade, 8th Ind. Mixed Brigade, 5th NCPC Infantry Brigade, 1st Mobile Infantry Regiment, 1st Recon Battalion, and 101st NCPC Route Brigade.

Japanese Deliberate Attack Near Paoshan

The 77th and 111th Chindit Brigades repel Japan's 7th Ind. Tank Brigade, 3rd Tank Division, 6th Infantry Division, 22nd Infantry Division, and 39th Infantry Division.

OPERATION SEA SHARK

Ground Forces

The American, Canadian, and New Zealand ground forces are preparing for their objectives for the scheduled Invasion of the Southern four Marianas Islands on or about June 15, 1943.

United States Marines and United States Army ground forces are pouring into Pearl Harbor.

New Zealand ground forces are grouping at Lahaina.

Canadian ground forces are gathering at Hilo.

Carrier Aircraft

The following aircraft squadrons require Political Points to be spent to change Command:

1 Wildcat squadron that arrives at Santa Ana on February 15, 1943.

8 Dauntless Dive Bombers (one presently stationed at Pearl and seven presently stationed at San Diego).

4 Avenger Torpedo Bombers (1 presently stationed at Pearl and 3 presently stationed at March Field).

All aircraft have flown off the American Carriers at Pearl Harbor. American Carriers have left Pearl Harbor for Los Angeles. Aircraft changing commands at Los Angles, March Field, and San Diego will fly onto the carriers and commence training for carrier duties.

As we get closer to June, 1943 more detailed Operation Sea Shark plans will be provided to The War College.

Best Regards,

-Terry

Good move on the omission of Combat Reports. Looking at every minor action is quite tedious, although a major clash is worthy of a look.

Personally, naval action is where my interests lie so occasional listing of losses for both sides is requested.

I agree. Naval action will hopefully always be reported.

And, thank you for agreeing with me.

El Lobo continues to bomb the Chinese.

There weren't any ground attacks today.

Submarines oiled the waters today.

Near Lahaina

Japanese submarine SS I-1 sinks Allied xAK John P. Holland.

Allied DD Saufley hits SS I-1 four times, setting it on fire and inflicting heavy damage.

Near Shemya Island

Allied SS Gato hits xAK Midori Maru once setting it on fire.

Japanese DD Samidare hits SS Gato once.

Near Maryborough

Allied DD Morris hits Japanese SS I-172 once.

Best Regards,

-Terry

Naval....

....and key battles in ground combat, and perhaps key air battles that accomplish a major objective i.e. closing down the airbase in anticipation of attack.

And maps where key offensive or defensive actions are taking place.

Too much ??

As you choose.

Firstly your AAR is well written ! I have followed! The format of a college tutorial is unique.

Secondly I think we all appreciate the time involved so thank you !

--

I think the underlying popularity for the really riveting "Allied AARs" (which I follow) is not so much the style because everyone has their own take.

However (limited) combat results and maps from specific hot spots do add a lot because I can visually follow in your foot steps; you are not only entertaining, you are teaching.

I can place myself in your position and ponder: What would I do? or I hadn't considered that ? or how in the h-e-double hockey sticks did he organize those troops there !

That's were simple comments add value like: Northern Pacific ~ nothing ever to report

Have you moved anybody into evidently vacant Rabaul/New Guinea area? I hate to harp, but at this point you to need to start some serious engagement if for no other reason than to start the attrition process. The India/Burma skirmish isn't going touch the IJN. Your esteemed opponent is obviously quite content to sit back fortify and upgrade planes and production. We don't want him calling you Rio Yeller!!

Pont—

I don't wish to speak for Rio, but allow me to interject if you will.

Rabaul is being built up slowly—while hopefully, in appearance, maintaining its guileless, sleepy backwater character.

It will become important to my SS OPS during Operation Sea Shark.

Remember, IJN will be rudely cuffed across the chin when Sea Shark launches. Each side will suddenly be propelled out of this easy pace and be presented with an existential dilemma.

As for our dilemma we have long decided: to risk everything at the Marianas.

At the instant his alarm sounds at our approach, El Lobo's dilemma will be rudely thrust upon him, and I suspect he will respond with full fury.

For my part, the operation will include around 115 submarines (baring catastrophic losses until then) and around 60 minesweepers.

Rio's far greater participation is no less committed: Everything means everything.

Hope that helps, my friend,

Hag

Sorry for the hyperbole. I guess I'm just another overly-excited newbie

I'm not certain of the kickoff date...

Always good to hear from you!

Macclan5-

Thank you for following The War College AAR and for the compliment regarding this AAR.

All of your recommendations above are good and appropriate for this AAR; and no doubt good for any AAR.

I can't take credit for my organization skills regarding troop movement; Luke Robitae is my troop movement adviser. *laughing*

pontiouspilot-

*cracking up at Rio Yeller* You are going to make John Wayne roll over in his gave!

At this time, I don't have any plans to occupy Rabaul and New Guinea. I am earmarking and stockpiling every toothbrush for Operation Sea Shark. As it is, I will only have close to 6,000 AV to invade the four Southern Marianas Islands on or about June 15, 1943.

I disagree with you on the Burma situation for the following reasons:

1.) Though it is taking longer than anticipated to take back Burma due to El Lobo's heavy investment in Burma, Burma is tying-up numerous Japanese ground forces that I would have to face sooner or later elsewhere.

2.) Burma has forced El Lobo to divert Japanese ground forces from his attempt to capture Chengtu and Chungking resulting in it taking him longer than expected to conquer all of China. Note the number of infantry and tank divisions he has sent to the border to protect his back door.

3.) Within two to three weeks, all Allied ground forces in Burma will have completed their initial mission to completely surround and cut off all Japanese ground forces North of Toungoo and Prome. At that point, he will be unable to extract all of his forces in the North. Accordingly, his attempted retreat will be very costly for him. Further, the Magwe oil will not get back to Japan.

4.) Within ten days, the Allies will commence pounding the Japanese in Burma with 4Es and B-24 Liberators with massive fighter support. El Lobo is going to lose numerous aircraft as the Allies will have overwhelming air superiority.

5.) Once the Allies begin deliberate attacks, artillery bombardments, and of course the air bombing. El Lobo will use lots of supply.

I could have moved in one massive stack and just shoved my way through Burma. However, that wasn't my goal. My goal is to trap and destroy as many Japanese ground forces in Burma as possible.

So, who's opinion is right, yours or mine. *cracking up* At this point, I haven't a clue. I suppose time will let us know.

Thank you for commenting and don't desert me as I will surely need you as the war heats up more and more.

Best Regards,

-Terry

BBfanboy-

The armada is presently scheduled to leave the Hawaiian Islands on June 1, 1943. The invasion force will sail directly to the four Southern Marianas Islands, passing one hex below Wake Island. It will take approximately two weeks to reach the Marianas Islands. I suspect that the invasion fleet will be detected about a week before the landings take place.

I anticipate troops landing on or about June 15, 1943 on Saipan, Tinian, Rota, and Guam.

All the carriers will sit one hex East of Rota and wait for all bombardment and landing ships to unload and form back up with the carriers. It will take several days to unload all the ground forces and supply.

The carriers will be loaded primarily with fighters. Many carrier capable and trained Dive and Torpedo Bombers will remain at Pearl so that the carriers can accommodate more Wildcats. The fighters will engage in Long Range CAP and CAP over the carriers. I want to take a toll on his carrier trained pilots.

I suspect that El Lobo will meet the Allies at the Marianas and that it is going to be bloody. So be it, have to fight the bastard somewhere. *laughing*

Step Two of Operation Sea Shark is to invade Formosa no later than December 31, 1943 (hopefully sooner).

Step Three of Operation Sea Shark is to invade Hong Kong and Amoy no later than April 1, 1944 (hopefully sooner).

The goal of Operation Sea Shark is four-fold:

1.) Establish a Naval blockade running from the Marianas Islands to Hong Kong; thereby preventing as many of El Lobo's ground forces as possible South of the line from reaching points North of the line and to prevent as much as possible oil from the South reaching Japan.

2.) Invade China from the South to assist the Allies pushing East from Burma.

3.) Get supply to China.

4.) Push toward Manchukuo to hopefully trigger Russia to join the war and to push to Korea to bomb Japan proper into oblivion.

The dates to invade Formosa and the coast of China are naturally rough dates. I suppose the timing will depend upon how many of El Lobo's forces the Allies face at the Marianas Islands and Formosa.

That is the general idea. Details to follow as we get closer to the jump dates for the individual steps of Operation Sea Shark.

Best Regards,

-Terry

I'm not about to try to talk you outa the big dice roll...I'm just trying to shame you into a couple of dice rolls instead!! The attrition I seek is IJN. Attrition is the Allies' best weapon and that the Japanese should fear most. Burma will tie up vast quantities of troops but a fully intact IJN with a good quantity of mid-war aircraft is daunting. Do you have any eyes on the prize ie. any recon of the target islands? Yes I know that this can alert an opponent. The reason I ask is that the evil empire has presumably been doing something for 2 years, since he never grabbed the usual NG/New Brit ground. My hunch might be that he is hunkering down in the Marianas hoping for the "decisive battle" in friendly waters, exactly as their doctrine was in real life. Also, I'm guessing that you don't get enough specialized landing craft to pull off island attack of this size until mid-year.

Here's to hoping you find somewhere to poke a stick in his eye before then!!

Cheers!

Ut oh! El Lobo forced the Chindit Brigades to retreat toward Burma.

Near Buldir Island

Allied submarine SS Gato puts a torpedo into Japanese xAK Midori Maru setting it a blaze with heavy damage. Intelligence reports that Midori Maru sunk.

Good job, Commander Haggard.

Near Nanyang

Japanese attack the 88th Chinese Corps.

The 88th repels Japan's 1st Mobile Infantry Regiment, 1st Recon Battalion, 8th Ind. Mixed Brigade, 9th RGC Route Brigade, 101st RGC Route Brigade, and the 5th NCPC Infantry Brigade.

The Commander of the 88th recently wrote a book entitled, "Sling Shot Tactics to ding Japanese Infantry." Evidently, his tactics are working.

Near Paoshan

Japanese attack forces the Chindit Brigades and the 70th Coast AA Regiment to retreat toward the Burma Border. Fortunately, tomorrow, the 25th/A Division will move into the turf vacated by the Chindit Brigades.

The 25th/A Division faces a formidable foe consisting of 6th Division, 22nd Division, 39th Division, 3rd Tank Division, and 7th Ind. Tank Brigade.

Hopefully, the 25th/A Division can hold the ground until additional Allied reinforcements arrive.

Cheers!

pontious pilot-

You set forth reasonable and good points.

I have no idea how much El Lobo has stuffed onto the four Southern Marianas Islands. I won't have hardly any landing craft (mainly just xAKs and xAPs for Amphibious Landings). Further, I suspect that El Lobo will detect the invasion fleet approximately one week before the troops hit the beaches and it will take days for them to fully unload.

El Lobo knows me very well. He knows that I haven't been sitting on my heels for nothing. He knows that he hasn't seen any Marines. However, he doesn't know where the Allies will strike. El Lobo has numerous locations to consider. If, as you suggest, he guesses right, then I am going to need a heap more Doctors and Nurses.

If he guesses wrong, or thinks the Allies won't strike the Marianas Islands until October or later in 1943, then the Allies stand a good chance of capturing, at a minimum, the four Southern Marianas Islands.

It isn't like I am not nervous, for a variety of reasons that keep me awake at night worrying. *chuckling*

Events will fortunately or unfortunately unfold. In either event, it will be interesting.

Best Regards,

-Terry

Of course, Japanese aircraft continue to bomb Chengtu and Chungking.

Otherwise, it was a relatively slow day in terms of combat actions.

Allied Submarine Attack Near Attu

Allied submarine SS Greeling launches Torpedoes and misses Japanese Destroyers DD Michishio, DD Hatsushima, and DD Shigure.

SS Greenling suffers one hit from the Japanese Destroyers.

Japanese Deliberate Attack Near Chungking

Japan's 13th Ind.Mixed Brigade, 61st Infantry Brigade, and 63rd/A Division attack the 70th Chinese Corps.

The 70th repels the War Mongers!

Best Regards,

-Terry

No surprise, El Lobo's bombers made several raids against Chengtu and Chungking.

PBY-5 Catalinas from Dutch Harbor get hammered over Adak Island. The Catalinas were unable to drop a single torpedo to damage Japanese ships at Adak Island.

I get a kick out of Commander Haggard and El Lobo's friendly, humorous banter regarding their submarine warfare. El Lobo refers to it as "Dancing with Subs." Today, one of Hag's AMs hit a Japanese submarine three times.

No ground combat today.

I have ordered Commander Haggard to sink the Valiant (S.O.B. is costing me 65 Political Points per day and it is 15 days from reaching Cape Town).

Near Portsea

Allied AM Muritai hits SS I-16 three times. SS I-16 is taking on water.

Best Regards,

-Terry

Nice job at Chengtu but better rebuild those forts!

River crossings are hairy deals - you never know if you will take mild or wicked casualties. If I can, I always try to cross up or down river from the target hex and march in.

BBfanboy-

I have been trying to rebuild the forts. Problem is: SUPPLY!!!!!

My thoughts were to visit Lashio from all directions thereby owning all hexsides and cutting off retreat. You're right, I did know that crossing the river would trigger a shock attack. In hindsight, I should have just put a BF behind the river and left that there so that those Evil El Lobo forces couldn't retreat into my occupied hex.

In the future, I am quite sure that after the spanking El Lobo gave me, I will be more cautious fly fishing in the rivers. *chuckling*

Best Regards,

-Terry

A slow day in the war.

Japanese bombers only made two strikes today, one at Chengtu and one at Chungking. Japanese aircraft must have been in the hangars for maintenance.

Allied aircraft hit a Japanese transport.

There was only one ground combat. Allied artillery shelled the Japanese at Lashio without inflicting a single casualty.

Two Allied Anti-Tank units left Shwebo today heading for the Burma-China Border.

Near Chuginadak Island

A PBY-5 Catalina out of Dutch Island put a torpedo into xAK Manzyu Maru, setting it on fire.

Best Regards,

-Terry
