Hey guys I'm looking for suggestions for a board game that may be entertaining to kids (9,10, and 12), but still in a strategy wargamingish type genre. Was thinking something like Risk, Shogun (or whatever they are calling the reprint of that old game now ), or Axis and Allies ...

I think Memoir 44 is an entry level game

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/10630/memoir-44

That site will let you refine your search for kids games in case you werent aware of it.

You would scare off most kids with this great game ...it comes later when they are hooked on board games.

Out of print but can still find on e-bay ... two of the old American Heritage games ... "Dogfight" and "Blue and Gray" ... Hmmm, might have the Civil War game miss titled. Both of these games are very straight forward, easy, and great introductions to wargames for the younger crowd. They are the two that got me started. Think I was 10 when I discovered them. The Civil War game really isn't historically based. You simply play a strategy game on a US map using fun inf, cav, and art figures.

Axis and Allies was too much for me and my little brother. I don't remember when I got it and was my brother in his 20's yet at the time. We made initial set-up, played some of the first turn, but didn't make it through. I think major problem is the scale: it could be easy to forget what pieces have been moved on the turn, and dear lord if board shakes by knee hitting on the table...

On tactical front, I recommend BattleTech with Alpha Strike rule book. Traditional BattleTech can be little overwhelming, but Alpha Strike provides alternative rule set which greatly simplifies gameplay and related statistics. Also I've read stories where seasoned players have teached the game to the kids (NOT the Alpha Strike one) and got them enjoy of it. If I got your interest and you need/want more info, go ahead and ask. I can tell about the game as much as you want to know. Also rumours about death of BattleTech have been greatly exaggerated

I would go with Memoir '44, it's a great game - easy to learn and quick to play, but very engaging.

Yeah, it was Battle Cry not Blue and Grey for Civil War game. Broadsides is another one that is great also and fun.

Also, I got my nephews into wargames with those games and games out of comic books that have "minatures". Kids like games with minature pieces not chits or cardboard. Get them something with minatures and you'll have them hooked.

A big "yes" to these two. I also played both of those

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgamefamily/3161/american-heritage-games. Any of these games would be great I plated most of them.

I completely forgot about "Broadsides." Another great game. Like Dogfight and Battle Cry played it when I was in grade school. My next door neighbor, Phil (my age), had Broadside (I had Dogfight and Battle Cry). We'd get about half way through a Broadside game. Stop. Take the game's ships to a table and play our own made up game moving the model ships around and goofing off. Yes, sometimes we would finish the game before starting our imagination game. Great memories. I can not over recommend Broadsides, Dogfight, and Battle Cry for the younger generation that are looking for a simple/easy intro to wargaming.

And for an electronic game they will like and deals with strategy and tactics is a game called "Dark Towers", it's about $300 now in mint condition if not more but, you can find cheaper versions that usually don't have the box or manuals. It's easy to play and fun for the whole family.

What about "A House Divided"? It's easy to learn and to play.
