Version 1.0

To take a break from working on the editor I thought it would be interesting to do an AAR.

Poland

My main goal for the initial attack on Poland was to isolate as many Polish forces in pockets as possible to prevent the ability to operate back to Warsaw. My hope is to force Polish surrender in 2 turns.

Atlantic

The Scarhnhorst and Gneisenau Battle Crusiers have been escorted into the Norwegian sea accompanied by 3 German Submarine Groups for raiding duties in the Atlantic. I decided to leave the remaining German Fleet (1 Heavy Cruiser, 2 Destroyers) in the Baltic Sea as they offer little protection to the submarine groups from Allied destroyers without upgrades to their weaponry.

Events

The war with Poland has seemingly upset everyone! France and the UK decisively declared war on Germany, while Portugal, Saudi Arabia and Turkey all protested the war, moving from neutral to Allied leaning.

Via Decision Events I have decided to provide exports to Spain from both German and Italy to help sway Franco into the Axis camp. Spain begins the campaign at 10% Axis leaning (a 10% decrease from the default campaign). One of my main goals will be to entice Spain to join the Axis cause for the main purpose of capturing Gibraltar to close the Mediterranean after I capture Egypt. I have also brokered a deal with Switzerland to store our plundered gold reserves so that we can trade with some other neutral nations in the future (namely Switzerland herself and Portugal).

Currently German is continuing trade with a number of countries (Norway, Sweden, Romania, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Greece, and exporting to Spain with negative MPP results.)

Allied Turn

The UK in turn have shaken things up! The UK has invoked the Anglo-Portugese Alliance! I have actually set this as a low % of the AI actually accepting in version 1.01, but here we go. In response Spain has swung toward the Axis, which coupled with Axis exports to Spain have left Spain leaning heavily (53%) towards the Axis.

Britain has also spurred Greece to severe economic ties with Germany via restrictive trade agreements. While Greek MPP's were welcome they are short lived.

Malta will be a tougher nut to crack as the UK has spent extra MPP to upgrade the air defense of Malta.

Poland

Poland collapsed on Turn 2, with the USSR invading from the East. A lot of out of supply Polish units were mopped up, giving the Germans valuable experience and national morale bonuses. I decided to honor the Molotov-Rippentrop Pact and Poland split. The alternative is very troublesome after all.

Events

The Turkish government was further upset with Germany and the terms of the Molotov Ribbentrop Pact. Meanwhile, although Greek so abruptly severed tied with Germany we explore making amends. Normally I would not attempt to persuade (however likely unsuccessful) both Greece and Spain at once, the UK's decision to bring Portugal into the war has presented the opportunity to try to sway both - And I will. While this event does not swing Greece very far back towards the Axis, it does open the door for me to use diplomacy to bring Greece back towards the Axis camp.

MPP Expenditures

Germany invested in Infantry Weapons while Italy invested towards improving her lackluster industry.

With Spain already heavily Axis leaning I should have lots of time to bring her into the Axis, so I invest all my diplomacy chits into Greece. Germany spend remaining MPP on a new Tank unit which will arrive in March 1940, in time to participate in the invasion of the Low Countries and France.

Italy is presented with a few decision events this turn. First I decided to sell naval assets (presented below). Secondly I was provided with a decision to overhaul the nation's aircraft industry (20 MPP over 35 turns) which I opted against, as Italian air will not be a priority for me this game, instead I will focus mainly on infantry and tank forces.

Allied Turn

Canada has declared war on Germany this turn and the UK occupied Irish ports. German submarines wasted little time raiding the Canadian convoy!

German Diplomacy has inched Greece closer to Axis leaning. No action once again, with only some minor convoy raiding. Germany invested in Industrial Technology while Italy invested in Infantry Weapons.

Spain owes a debt to Germany, and we have devised a plan to recoup some of that debt via exports of Wolfram. German engineers are dispatched to Spain to help develop the mines.

Germany invests in Advanced Aircraft and Submarines, while Itlay invests a second chit in Industry.

No significant war action again this turn.

German forces have reached the Maginot Line and the Low Countries awaiting the turn of good weather. Germany receives more good news, Greece leans 7% further towards the Axis, while convoy raiding begins to pick up steam.

In North Africa Italian Forces begin to mass near Tobruk, receiving reinforcements from mainland Europe.

The French have formed the Polish I Corps in effort to to deter German invasion. More likely the Polish will lose round 2.

Germany moved forward with "Naval Plan Z" although with just a single aircraft carrier. However, Germany also decided to to keep the Light Cruiser Lutzow, which was destined to USSR via Molotov-Rippentrop Pact. This upsets Stalin, but since it is already complements the decision to increase our Navy via Naval Plan Z. Elsewhere, near the French border German forces have regrouped to full strength. And Greece leans 6% closer to the Axis! A very lucky streak here!

In North Africa Gariboldi has arrived to command Italian forces for the future offensive against Egypt. Italy also once again agrees to market military assets, this time fighter aircraft are sold to Sweden, after USA refuses to fulfill Sweden's prewar order. Italy receives 100 MPP and Sweden leans slightly more to the Axis. This should help deter Allied diplomatic efforts to cut off our convoys, or at least delay them.

Atlantic raiders encounter a Canadian Destroy group off the coast of Newfoundland in rough seas. The Canadian destroyers received 50% damage as a result and will likely return to port.

Greece is nearing the Axis sphere of influence once again. I have decided to invest an additional 100 MPP to bring the probability of success back up to 20%. A quick look through reports has also revealed that the UK has spent 250 MPP on diplomacy. I have not seen any success on their part yet, and am not sure where there diplomacy chits are invested.

Germany makes preparations for the invasions of Norway and Denmark. With Panzer reinforcements received this turn, we anticipate a decisive thrust into the low countries in next month should the weather hold.

Atlantic

In the Atlantic, the Canadian Destroyer group was sunk off Newfoundland and convoy raiding is back to business as usual.

Greece

Greece diplomacy has had lady luck on my side. Another diplomacy hit and Greece is leaning Axis 8%. Now that Greece is again in the Axis sphere of influence I have begun investing (1 chit this turn) into Spanish diplomacy. We are again also receiving Greece imports!

Italy

Italy prepares for war on the backs of German conquests. On the flip side USA protests Germany's aggression.

Ireland?

There are pop up reports from German spies that airfields are being expanded in Ireland...

France

The German attack is swift and powerful as our Panzer Armies quickly cut through the French Lines, allowing our forces within 2 hexes of Paris within the first turn. I expect some of the French forces to melt away and return to defend Paris on the Allied turn.

The always ill prepared Italians are prompted with a decision to strengthen their supply lines for an attack on Egypt, or to opt instead for a defensive position near Tobruk. I opt to take the offensive approach to try to put as much room between the Allied forces and Tobruk as possible.

The Italians were not quite ready to join this turn, and many units had to be reinforced rather then advance on Egypt. Italian MPP per turn is still very low, and now we are fighting a war. Via decision event, Italy and German have agreed to the transfer of resources from Germany to Italy. Italy will receive 15 MPP per turn, though it will cost Germany 25 MPP (Germany is much more efficient). The agreement is to last until the war with USSR.

France

The Germans have reached the gates of Paris where a French Army and a Heavy Tank formation defend the Capital. Our main Panzer groups have halted for the turn to regroup for one final attack, while German air re-base in Belgium. The majority of French forces have been forced away from Paris and line the coast of the English Channel or have remained at their post on the Maginot line. The capture of Nancy by German paratroopers have reduced the ability to operate 6 of the 8 Corps/Armies near the Maginot line as Strasbourg has no supply.

I expect Paris to fall next turn, but with so many French forces still abound I can not be certain that the French will capitulate immediately. With German MPP we continue to look forward, investing in Spying/Intelligence and Ground Attack Weapons.

A shot is yet to be fired in North Africa, however the Italians have concentrated their attacking forces and are prepared to march towards Alexandria. I have left strong garrisons at Tobruk and El Aghelia to protect key bases in any event that the UK, and recently arrived Commonwealth forces beat the Italians back decisively.

I also receive welcome news - Italy develops Industrial Technology I

France

Paris has fallen but the country as I suspected has not surrendered and have moved the Capital to Bordeaux. Another turn of dismantling French units will hopefully put an end to French resolve.

Germany invests in Long Rang Aircraft, maxing out research spending in the process and invest another chit in Spanish diplomacy. The UK had a diplomacy hit with Spain, which if i'm correct in remembering means that they have more chits invested in Spain that I do? Hopefully I did not lose my chance to bring Spain towards the Axis by investing early in Greece diplomacy.

USSR

The USSR annexed the Baltic States and Besserabia from Romania.
