My first PBEM playing as Allies.

Lexy TF is kind of trapped docked in port with KB few hexes away, detection 10/10. Beginners luck, thunderstorms prevented attack last turn, but it won't last.

What would you do if you were... Japan in such situation? It's still December 1941, KB is far out of friendly port, just with replenishment TF around, Lexington sits there in port waiting to be sunk....

Would place SCTF (KB battleships) on patrol at the entrance of the port to catch you fleeing. And Naval + Port attack settings for KB sitting 4-5 hexes out
This assuming there is no Allied LBA or SC presence of importance in the area

What I would do if I were YOU is pull all the escorting ships into a surface combat TF to sortie in an attempt to get a night surface action with the KB while disbanding the Lex into the port.

By disbanding into port you get attacked only once in the afternoon. If you stay in a TF you get attacked by NAV attack both morning and afternoon.

The surface force should be set for a patrol pattern where you guess the KB may move to rather than a straight move to a destination hex.

Set reaction range to 6 hexes. Using a patrol order will enable the reaction capability. Without the patrol order, no reaction and thus probably no interception unless very lucky.

You are likely going to lose everything because you let him box you in.

Your best hope is to do some damage with the surface force while you go down in flames.

Having the surface force at sea may also cause the KB to NAV strike it in both the morning and afternoon phases, leaving Lex untouched.

KB must have been going full speed ahead at least for 1 turn to get here, it was so much further away 2 turns ago when Lex was fleeing. Good anticipation on my opponnent part or maybe experience, which I lack.

As above really, if you have 1 carrier in '41 facing the KB you have no chance.

If its the Lexs original starting group, I'd disband the Lex in port and form 2 x SCTF with the CAs and the DDs and charge out at full speed away from the island in two different directions.

One, you'd probably only lose the Lex

Two, slim chance he thinks you've got away

Three, might do some damage to the KB. Anything that stops flight operations to even one carrier can make a big difference in '41

Just as a check, most players have a "do not hunt the US carriers on Turn 1" rule in operation so do avoid them getting smacked. Is this the case in this game?

Also take the squadrons off the Lex transferring them to the land base.

Alternative is to sprint full speed away hoping he guesses wrong on your direction and/or that he incurred sufficient engine damage form his high speed sprint that making another one may incur sufficiently more damage to slow him giving chase.

base is Brisbane, starting Lexy TF, no LBA to speak of (Australian Hudsons), no fighters in Australia yet... I was poking around Rabaul (still in my hands) when spotted and hunted down.

Yes sir you are pretty much screwed!....that west coast of Australia is a box canyon. I agree that something desperate may be your only option. I like sending our surface ship straight out after KB and sending Lex south at full speed...maybe the weather will be your friend. You may as well strip her of planes however.

good luck!

I would leave Lex in the Brisbane - she can even survive a full attention of KB Port strike, especially if other ships are around the port to help spread the damage (Even if Lex survives, she will require a lot of repairs).
Get the Lex planes onto ground, set bombers to search (that could help naval interception), fighters to full CAP. Lexington's surface escort should try a night intercept (but do not except wonders) - I would probably use just destroyers/light cruisers for this.

Another possibility is to full scatter - make several 2-3 ship Task Forces and send them in all directions at full speed. Some may escape - but do not take CAG-2 along, just leave it in Brisbane as mentioned beforehand.

If he is far enough away and not patrolling right outside the harbor with a SF, I'd sally full speed out of Brisbane with my force and move one or two hexes over into the nearest dot or lvl 1/2 port. He won't see it unless he recons there. If you get there in the night phase, the force will disband before he notices.

Fortunately, Brisbane is on the east coast of Australia (unless it is customary to hold maps with South at the top in the southern hemisphere?)

My esteemed enemy didn't even try a port attack.

Perhaps he isn't experienced enough to have thought through your options and set counters for them.
An experienced player would have set his bombers for NAV primary and Port secondary as another experienced player mentioned above.

Or it could be something as simple as weather cancelling the strike, or KB refuelling, etc.
And if this is his first game he may not realize that Australia has virtually no fighters at game start!

In December it has none, null, zero, unless I bring some from DEI or PH, the latter takes more than 2 weeks, especially when KB position is unknown after PH strike.
