I think there are issues right now with all three Scandinavian countries,

1. Norway. The Germans just do not or cannot defend it. If the Allies commit the SF to the battle they will seize Narvik and then can stroll down the entire country until they reach Trondheim which only has a garrison and can be routed out with almost no issues. Might need to add some corps to the mix to make it easier to hold.

2. Sweden. It is way too easy to cut off the Germans from their iron supply with a few diplomatic chits. Once they are any percentage allied leaning the supply stops flowing. This is tough since making it a higher Axis Leaning it would be too easy to add them to them Axis but as it is it is an easier win for the Allies.

3. Finland. Finland is pro-Axis and allegedly will join if Germany declares war on Soviet Union or if they get within 4 of Leningrad if USSR declares war. Neither appears to be true. They never join when I declare war. I thought I understood that the info was reversed because they seemed to join when I reached Narva but playing as the Allies they joined when the Germans were still stuck down around Riga so maybe it is just time. No idea.

I agree with 1 and 2. Regarding 3 I don't know what to think. Sometimes it works fine (they join once the Germans reach up there), but sometimes it seems the Fins won't join no matter what.

Hi

The conditions for Finland to join the Axis are that Finland must be pro-Axis and an Axis unit is within 1 hex of Pskov or Ostrov or Polotsk or 4 hexes of Leningrad or 5 of Novgorod.

This is to stop Finland entering the war when the Axis are weak and the USSR has mobilized.

I've checked the relevant script and can't see any reason why this wouldn't fire in a game providing the conditions listed above are met.

If you find a situation where Finland doesn't join when these conditions have been met then please send me a saved turn.

Thanks

Bill

I'm playing a game as Allies now where I'd spent a lot of chits on Finland and they joined the Allied side. They just assisted the USSR defend Leningrad in 41 and 42. Now starting to move a little south in early 43 as the Germans pull back due to loses elsewhere and Allied moves in the Med. that are close to knocking Italy out of the war soon.

I also heavy invested in Spain to keep it Allied leaning or a little Axis when they made Diplo investments to counter mine. All you need to do is to avoid nations from entering the war against you. I did not spend chits early on Sweden, Turkey or Saudi Arabia (close to having them join Allied now and can't wait for the oil to flow) until Finland joined in 41.

Remember, it is not necessary to get a nation to 100% Allied every time in every game, just spend enough chits to keep them from joining the axis. A low % leaning Axis is OK (except for Sweden).

Anything can happen if you make the right choices (or the wrong ones ).

My remark about this was confused. I think when I played Germany, everything went as expected. But when I play the Allies, and the Allies help Finland against the Soviets, so that that they swing towards the Allies a bit, the Axis seems to never turn this around. This happened in 5 consecutive games where I was playing US/UK.

Atm I'm playing a game as Italy (Germany AI controlled) and it seems the same is happening - Germany seems not interested enough in getting Finland on its side. (I could do something about it as Italy, but I desperately need my meagre MPPs for other things ...)
