Thoughts on the game

First and foremost, Brian is a great opponent to have in every respect.

The start is crucial for the Germans and I think I managed to keep Brian off-balance throughout the summer. This meant that his was too weak to mount a useful winter O - it didn't have the numbers at the start and he'd lost too many factories to build a stronger one. In turn, this meant that, come the summer of '42, he was facing a Wehrmacht that he could not stop. However, he made the most of the free unit returns to cause some real problems down south in June and July, though that wasn't enough to save the day. With hindsight, if he had prepared better defence lines in the Baku/Malalakacha area, it would have been much harder and possibly nigh on impossible to get through. I would have had to get more VPs elsewhere. That would have been doable because the Red Army was so week, but would very probably have meant the game going into '43.

I now have time for another game unless Brian wants to swap sides.......................

Last but not least, thank you all for reading and contributing to this AAR. I hope that it has been helpful to to the less-experienced players and entertaining to all.

Great game thanks.
Brian is a very dangerous opponent, but I think this game shows that even talented Soviet players need to restrain their aggresive instincts in the early stages of the game (verses a strong Axis player).
If you play again and Brian adopts a defensive doctrine during Summer 41 you'll have a very different sort of game on your hands come 1942 I think.

Thanks for sharing the AAR SF. Although it ended early this was a very interesting game and Brian made it exciting right up to the end. Great game on your part - not bad for a Frenchman

It may not be over .

Brian has told me he thought the VPs needed had changed to 290. That does explain his moves in the mud turns. I had that he just wanted me to put him out of his misery.

I've said I'm happy to carry on provided I have my last turn back.

Ya I read his post as well...the scenario says 260 tho......and if you looks at the map....to get to 290....you would basically have to take the whole map from the soviets, that doesnt make much sense to me.

You can tell by his army numbers the situation should only be getting worse as he continues to lose manpower centers, I would guess his manpower/armaments are gone every turn, and as weak as his army looks will take a full year or more with no major losses to get to near full strength.

Also the free units is the only reason the game is going on......Almost 40 Corps lost on top of everything else...normally would be no recovering from that as the Soviets period.

Perhaps his masochism brings out my sadistic side

He's been such a tenacious opponent, I don't want to take the 'legal' route and bail out when he wants to carry on.

I've asked Pipfromslitherine to reset game to start of my T74 as I'm going to have to do the turn properly.
Good to know that the air losses in Brian's last turn (35 G to 277 R) won't be wasted.

Not to mention the fact that the election to switch back to turn 74 was obviously rigged, and the system crooked...

T74 was reinstated, though unfortunately to a save position almost at the end of my turn rather than the turn start I had asked for. We've been having a few power cuts of just a few seconds recently so I save often. Anyway, awaiting Brian's return of serve so I can post the bumper fun edition.

Because the saved position is held on the server it can only reload from the last save point which is why as you had been saving your position the turn was unable to be reset to the beginning of your turn,

Highway 74 Revisited

As explained above, I couldn't redo whole turn and had saved part way through because we have been having occasional power cuts here. They last just long enough to turn off the computer...............

This was annoying because I had moved my FBDs out of the way and done some other 'end of game' stuff but at least I could still do some good stuff. First, however a strategic view of the south

The picture you have all been waiting for as my slightly out of positioned forces get stuck in to the task f getting another 30 VPs as Brian believed alt VC260 really means alt VC290..............Problem is that the VP screen doesn't reflect the alt VC option.

Pockets 1 and 2: each 1 rifle xx + 1 rifle x
3: 1 rifle x
4 and 5: each 1 cav xx + 1 rifle xx

Thoughts on T74 Take 2

losses 7.4 to 57.1K. Air 70 to 88. Destroyed units 1 rifle xxx, 1 cav xxx, 6 rifle xx (1 gd) 1 mtn xx, 1 tank x and 2 regts. G OOB 3.99M, R 5,43M, so he recovered by about 50K each mud turn.

195 rail factories captured and 12 more isolated in Crimea, which will restrict Brian's strategic mobility. 1499 baby factories now in our hands and pumping out HIWIs. I now have just over 400K serving in the Wehrmacht - just over 10% of its manpower.

I had no plans beyond this point obviously, and Morvael has confirmed that Alt 260 still means 260 VPs, but we play on anyway........

I went for the big charge option. B can either retaliate so we have a big battle in the open which should result in him losing a lot more units, or something more modest that does not put more at risk. This would, however, be a change of approach for him. I extended more to the west than I thought I would, but the chance to destroy his fort line in that area was too good to miss.

I have a plan but I need to keep it to myself for now.

T75 Caucasus

The 2 remaining cities fall, leaving just a few remaining Bolshevik units to be rounded up. If only there were more

Top right of screen: German forces start to move up to join our allies for a push on Astrakhan. This town must be functioning as a supply source given to v. low 'hexes from supply' showing for Bolshevik units down here and at the other end of the rail line east of Goebbelsville. Taking Atown will therefore greatly reduce the front line as any communists hanging around will be a long way from a supply source

T75 action

Going for pockets and key terrain. FBDs getting back into position but only Saransk can be converted . Infantry catching up. 11th Army disappears but replaced by the pink one (18th?) which haas come down form the north to take over this key role.

Brian clearly up for open-field fight which suits me. He broke pockets 1,4 + 5 (see T74 screenshot) but the other 2 held. 1 has now been made bigger. Instead of 1 rifle xx and 1 rifle x, I now have 2 + 2/3rds tank xxx and another rifle xx isolated there.4 has added a cav xxx to its 2 divs.

Thoughts on T75

A tricky turn with the armour having to do it pretty much alone and the supply lines getting longer. Attacks are more costly than they used to be as Bolshevik units improve. The annoyance of disproportionately high losses attacking brigades remains.

However, I shall not be stopped from carrying out my evil plan . Now we are in for a long slog, I'm doing some analysis of the state of the R economy which I will publish with T76 because I cannot finish it until I have the turn back and we are back to 1 turn pw

His economy should be greatly damaged at this point, as even manpower will continue to reduce each year now and you still own a ton of his manpower points. If you can keep clearing out major cities as you advance, worst case he will never take the war back to europe---however 290 will be a steep curve to get a final win lol

From what I saw in my game vs Pelton the big reason german losses increase alot is all the artillery that gets added to the red army units from 1943 on which is historical. However you are smashing his army so quickly i think you are keeping his total artillery pieces very low for this point in the war. Which means your losses will increase some but probably not massively so as long as you can keep encircling and destroying Soviet units so he doesnt grow his force over around 7M men....the other key tipping point seems to be over 100k total soviet artillery pieces. Over 7M men and 100k artillery the game seems to tip completely in Soviet favor.

A good point about the arty numbers. G numbers have also gone down a bit since the game start. The number is slightly higher than the start but the Wehrmacht has got a lot bigger so the ratio of arty pieces to men has gone down by nearly 10%. Expect partly due to fact that support arty units don't increase in number as the no. of men goes up, and many corps arty units are under-strength esp. the heavy stuff. Several 210mm and bigger units have been cannibalised and the rest are on TOE of 60% or so because I don't want to waste my arms points on them.

When the game rightly ended, as it were, Brian had 5.48 men + 66.5K arty so about 2/3rds of where R would normally be at this point(see OOB shot top of this page). His OOB has reduced since then. I will try to remember to record T78 OOB when I get the game back.
