Merry Christmas all.

I was trying to help someone on the Steam discussion board regarding CWIS but I'm afraid I'm having the same problem. CIWS does not automatically fire... I have to manually target each missile* for it to fire on them. I would assume that this should happen automatically (I assume this for RL, or if not at least in game, I don't know what situation you would not want your CIWS to fire if a missile was in range).

I set up a scene with a destroyer with only a CIWS weapons system and sensors on vs 4 incoming vampires which are then classed as guided weapons long before entering range. I've checked all WRA and ROE, changed them to nearly every logical combination I can thing of, then every illogical one, but still CIWS only fires manually*.

I guess it's not a killer issue because when I do target manually it works, but it's not what I imagine the intended function is....

I'm still pretty sure I'm doing something wrong..... I can't even use the Search function on this site, so let that influence your opinion of me.

*It seems that if I only target the first one or two missiles, the CIWS will automatically target the next one, but then again revert to only manual targeting e.g. I target vampire #1 and #2, CIWS takes out #1, #2, and #3 but leaves #4. Or I target #1, #2, #3, and it will then take out all 4.

Welcome aboard. While the search function is down try Google: site:matrixgames.com ''CIWS". Not perfect, but its has helped me find items a few times. Looks like you are trying hard to make it work so we (I) have a good opinion. But if the experts do not have an easy answer, be ready to upload your test scenario.

Here is the scene I quickly made up to test. The 4 vampires are already on their way in, but from a reasonable distance. The defending vessel only has CIWS.

I assume, based on asking for the scene, that in general CIWS does automatically fire and that is the intended behaviour? (and thus I am doing something wrong ;) )

Thanks for the help guys. Oh, and if you have anything better to do I can appreciate that and don't expect my problem solved for a good while. Have a good one.

Sorry but I ran your scenario three times and all US weapons fired at the incoming bogeys without any manual input.

Did you run this on a time compression?? or 1-1??

Damnit, I uploaded the wrong scene. That's what I get for randomly bashing on the keyboard to name something.

I've attached the correct scene this time. The US vessel should only have CIWS system and no SAM or other guns.

Although your log does provide data which fits in with what I was saying - Yes your weapons fired in self-defence (to be clear my only issue was with CIWS, SAM and other guns are not an issue), but your CIWS only fired after your other weapons had already fired and thus set vampires as Targets.... I have still not seen CIWS fire by itself without either manual targeting OR having had a previous target (e.g. I target vampire #1 and #2, CIWS takes out #1, #2, and #3 but leaves #4. Or I target #1, #2, #3, and it will then take out all 4.). I know that doesn't prove a case of CIWS not working properly (I'm still sure it is me do something wrong) but it does fit in with the undesired behaviour I've seen.

If you wouldn't mind taking a look at the scene I've attached now. It's the same scene, just sans the other weapons.

@michaelm

I've played it through on various speeds. Mostly compressed until the vampires get to just outside CIWS range, then I go back to 1-1 to watch it play out.

I don't know if I'm going into pedant territory now.... CIWS does seem to work when you have other weapons systems, but it's the ambiguity of not knowing that's going to be an itch I need to scratch.

Ok, when running your modified scenario the CIWS did indeed not fire. But when I removed all AA capable munitions from you first scenario, the Phalanx did fire. So by removing the other weapons you broke the game somehow. I'll try to dig a bit more into this.

12:28:03 - Contact GuidedWeapon #2 has been lost.
12:28:03 - Gun (20mm/85 Mk15 Phalanx Blk 0 Burst [200 rnds]) is attacking SS-N-2a Styx [P-15] #5 with a base-Ph of 70%. Base-Ph adjusted for distance: 58,9%. Target speed modifier: -9%. Target size modifier: -3%. Final Ph: 47%. Result: 1 - HIT
12:28:03 - Gun (20mm/85 Mk15 Phalanx Blk 0 Burst [200 rnds]) is attacking SS-N-2a Styx [P-15] #5 with a base-Ph of 70%. Base-Ph adjusted for distance: 60%. Target speed modifier: -9%. Target size modifier: -3%. Final Ph: 48%. Result: 49 - MISS
12:27:55 - Contact GuidedWeapon #1 has been lost.
12:27:55 - All weapon seekers were spoofed - weapon missed target
12:27:55 - Decoy (Mk214 Sea Gnat Chaff [Seduction]; Tech: N/A) from DD 963 Spruance [Baseline] is attempting to seduce sensor: Active Radar Seeker (Tech: Early 1960s)(Guiding weapon: SS-N-2a Styx [P-15] #4). Final probability: 80%. Result: 5 - SUCCESS
12:27:00 - Contact: VAMPIRE #4 has been type-classified as: GuidedWeapon (Classification by: DD 963 Spruance [Baseline] [Sensor: Mk1 Mod 2 ROS] at 15,7 nm)
12:26:50 - Contact: VAMPIRE #3 has been type-classified as: GuidedWeapon (Classification by: DD 963 Spruance [Baseline] [Sensor: Mk1 Mod 2 ROS] at 15,7 nm)
12:26:40 - Contact: VAMPIRE #2 has been type-classified as: GuidedWeapon (Classification by: DD 963 Spruance [Baseline] [Sensor: Mk1 Mod 2 ROS] at 15,7 nm)
12:26:29 - Contact: VAMPIRE #1 has been type-classified as: GuidedWeapon (Classification by: DD 963 Spruance [Baseline] [Sensor: Mk1 Mod 2 ROS] at 15,8 nm)

You are right, when I remove all other weapons from the US loadout the Phalanx will not auto-fire anymore. I think the programming logic can not account for these situations and thus does nothing.
Good catch, the devs should indeed take a look at this.

Thanks for taking the time to help. I was just trying to give a new player on the Steam forums a hand, and then realised it may not actually be as simple as I thought. I'm not entirely sure how he is getting this problem though, as he is playing the tutorial and I doubt he is removing weapon mounts via the editor like us
