So the AI is doing well at defending Spain, exploiting my supply issues and deploying lots of teched up air and artillery.

Also they have have sensibly built a line of fortifications across Italy and put German armies in them with elite reinforcements, when I invaded Sicily.

However, the Russians have taken Danzig with no resistance. One corps on the whole Baltic route to Memel and one tank attempting to retake Memel.

Of course the AI is losing badly by now with the whole Heer chewed up around Kursk and Kharkov - but still, strange priorities!

Feels like the Eastern Front for the AI doesn't turn into a slow grind back to Berlin but a pretty rapid collapse. It doesn't manage the space all that well.

Yes this has been addressed before. It seems that once the Western Allies invade France or Spain, the Axis AI overreacts and sends the bulk of it's forces to the west and practically evacuates the east.

Currently I'm playing Allies controlling only US and UK. I'm hitting a major wall of German Inf / Armor and Air units in eastern France. Meanwhile, the AI controlled USSR is facing virtually no German resistance at all. Just occasional isolated units in cities that are easily bypassed, surrounded and destroyed. No semblance of a defensive line on that side.

Also, another minor point, after invading Spain I went on to liberate Portugal. The AI had several tough units in Portugal in some cities but oddly left the capital undefended allowing me to waltz in with a strength 3 Inf and capture it. Seemed like an odd choice.

The loss of non-German units - Spanish and Italian - blows huge holes in the eastern front so when those fall it makes it easy going often for the Russians.

Plus, the AI tries far too long to stay on the offensive in the East. The Germans are trying to encircle pockets they have zero ability to encircle and create spearheads it is easy for the Soviets to cut off, isolate and kill. This, again, opens massive holes in the German lines.

Good points. It feels like the AI needs a better understanding of when it has the upper hand and when it needs to retreat.

In my current game as the Allies, Spain declared war on Portugal. I decided to save Portugal from the Fascist and rushed US and British units there. So far I have encountered, Finnish, Spanish, Italian, German and Hungarian armies.

Also an issue.

The AI should decide on an HQ and then send matching units not hodgepodge together a force. It also has this issue on the Eastern Front where it sort of sprinkles units around without much regard to the HQs to support it.

The AI has an amount of issues - not just that.

It often self-punish its own units by attacking like a bull against a wall; giving experience to the enemy (that's pratically the way your units get experience vs the AI!)
It lacks situational understanding in attack as well (Especially when it boils down to landing. It seems to be scripted to land in Normandy and nowhere else - my Germany has 20 units in Normany and 3 in Denmark and 3 in the west-cost of France but the W.Allied trillion of units are crammed in the Channel since 5 turns or so by now).

But in general these games are tailored for Multiplayer and not to play vs the AI.
