Matti (Jukipo) and I (Ernieschwitz) along with alittle help from Alexandre (Bombur) have developed a scenario for the Finnish Winter War.

Currently it is in Beta, meaning we need to playtest balance, but apart from that it is almost ready to be published. A Public Beta (v.0.46) is now available:

http://www.advancedtactics.org/scenario.php?nr=235

Of course none of this could have happened without the help of Victor Reijkerz who has played a key role in the background.

Some Basic Info:

Background:
(taken directly from the Scenario description).
"In 1939 on the 30th of November, three months after the invasion of Poland, began the conflict that was going to be known as the Winter War. The two sides were Finland and the Soviet Union. The attack by the Soviet Union began with a fake shelling of an own village, and the blame for it was put on the Finns. War began and the Soviet military machine set in motion.

However it was not going to be an easy task for the Soviets. The Finns had great morale and knew the countryside very well. They also had a series of forts, known as the Mannerheim line, which they defended their country from. The Soviets had a great advantage in numbers. They had three times as many soldiers as the Finns, and 30 times as many aircraft. However many officers had been purged and morale and efficiency of the Soviet forces was thus diminished.

In the real world, the conflict lasted until the 13th of March 1940, with the signing of a peace treaty in Moscow. Before then the Soviet Union had been expelled from the League of Nations, December 14th 1939, and the attack was deemed illegal. Finland ceded 11% of its prewar terriroty, and 30% of its economic assets to the Soviet Union. The war had other consequences; chief among them probably Hitlers impression that the Soviet Army was no threat at all, and thus to launch Operation Barbarossa.

This game simulates that conflict, and challenges the Soviet player or Finnish player to do better in the time the war happened. The game automatically ends on the 13th of March 1940, and turns are 2 days each. During the game reinforcements and replacements will be available for purchase, and historically arrivals will happen."

And of course a Teaser picture... The view the Soviet player gets when he starts!

Hi,

This scenario is looking excellent. Going to use it to help test the next iteration of the currently still rudimentary AI library.

Any general extra pointers as what you would like the Soviets and Fins to do?

Best wishes,
Vic

Actually I do.

I cannot put it to words as well as Matti (Jukipo) did. So I will quote his email, on the Soviets problems:

quote:

I played the scenario through against challenging AI opponent. I got a major victory and was able to hold Mannerheim line. Soviet losses were about 100000 men and Finland lost 20000. Once it was able to occupy a hex in the fortified line, but I managet to get it back next turn. Artillery barrages destroyed fortifications in three hexes. The problem is the AI doesn't have guts to attack if it feels the odds are bad. Soviets have so many troops they shouldn't think about own losses. AI doesn't understand the war of attrition.

In the end the AI had over 500000 troops, most of them fresh unused divisions. AI had deployed it's troops four hexes deep belt in the Isthmus. I think AI can't get fresh divisions to the front because it worries overstacking?

Do you think it is possible to make AI more aggressive?

I think he is pretty much spot on. The problem is that the Soviet AI is really not willing to make an attack that it would later be able to use as a stepping stone to something bigger. It comes off feeling like it is afraid of bloodshed. So maybe it should be possible to set the AI to a more aggressive stance.

Both I and Jukipo found it to be able to plan the destruction of sections of the defensive line. Which is good, but it was unable to follow up on this, due to the lack of risk taking.

On the Finnish side of things... The AI is going for a frontline against the AI, in his face. It doesn't really garrison the forts, which would be desirable. So a recognition of good fortified areas would be nice.

In the area north of Lake Ladoga, it does a good job, the Soviet AI. It is however not as good as the finns. It does not recognize the fact that the roads are key, and that without them the Soviets have no supplies, really.

I think that is it for now.

Just started playing this awesome scenario by Ernie and I must say it is fantastic. I'm playing human vs human right now (solitaire) in order to get a feel for this.

First screen shot is part of the Southern front as of 12-8-39

Updated the scenario, with some of the new options that have been made for v080e. Remember to download the new version of the DC:CP, before you play this new version (0.45).

Would love to try it. Is it available anywhere? I wasn't able to find it on the VRdesigns scenario list.

It's on the second page atm. But I think it still is the featured scenario, that Vic has up. Also you would need to log in, of course.

I have played both sides VS the AI. It works well if you play the Soviet side, but agree with alex1917 comment above if you play the Finnish side. This is still a fantastic design and I salute you for all your hard work.
