Status: offline 		Having had fun with A time to Dance and The Pied Piper, it is time to move onto a new challenge. I've decided to stay with another small scenario. This one gives some really interesting challenges, not the least is that my force structure is very different and I have little real understanding of how best to use a recce type force.

As usual, I'm going to take some time to think, look at options and then develop a plan. I can tell you straight off, that unlike the last two scenarios, the options are not jumping out at me right away - which is going to make this one even more fun!

I hope you enjoy reading along as I plan, fight and react to this new scenario.

Intel is unclear who we are facing, maybe elements of either the 8th Guards Army or 1st Guards Tank Army. Either way, the soviet force will likely have high morale and readiness.

Early Int reports indicate a mixed force of
40-50 recce elements
1-10 helicopters
50-60 tanks – likely T-80s (1-2 Tk Bns)
50-60 Armoured Personnel Carriers and Infantry (1-2 MRBs)
With usual Recce, AD, and HQ support
2-3 Batteries of soviet artillery (both self-propelled and towed)

So, it looks like a TR or a MRR, with some helicopter support and more fire support than the last two scenarios.
It will be interesting to see how this develops…

Status: offline 		I'm not sure what the enemy is trying to do, so given the VP locations, I will assume that the soviets are trying to capture them.

Status: offline 		Here is the second option - there are plenty more options, but these are the two I'm looking at.

I'm hoping that they will be lead by their recce elements in both options, but need to be ready for the soviets to arrive quickly with lots of fire power...

A complete mixture of units

Force composition

Command element
4 M577s and 3 Bradleys

Ears and teeth company
5 Recce sections - with 2 Bradleys each
2 Tk Pls – with 3 M1s each
A Mortar Pl – with 2 M106A2 mortars
2 AD Pls – with 3 Avenger HMMWVs each

Eyes Squadron
2 Observation pls – with 2 Kiowa each
2 Attack pls – with 2 Cobras each

Fangs Battery
8 M109A2s
8 M548s

Tasks
Identify Soviet forces
Delay/slow down their movement
Destroy enemy units

Look, Listen and fight when forced to screen

This is going to be difficult. Even after looking at the terrain, soviet forces and friendly forces, I’m not sure exactly what I’m trying to do.

I’m not trying to hold ground except to get VPs for the ground, I need to.

All VPs are in the centre area of the map. Which means I need to push out somewhat quickly to get them…

My tasks are vague and identify enemy is a difficult task to quantify

My force structure is unique. I have lots of different types of vehicles. I do not have much experience (game or real life) with these types of forces

What do I know for sure:

I have lots of eyes
Need to use them to find the soviet forces
Need to keep them from engaging the soviets too much

I have some teeth
Need to use them in a coordinated way to get the most bang for my buck
Think about quick strikes
Be careful not to get sucked into a prolonged engagement

I have some fire support
Need to make sure that I use my Arty wisely
To assist recce forces in breaking contact
When attacking with teeth, provide lots of support

Okay, so what do I need to do;

Find the enemy to figure out what I am against, where he is and where he is going. This is easier said then done!

Fix the enemy - If possible, get the enemy to stop moving or to bunch up

Strike - If possible, hit the enemy hard, with quick powerful strikes.

Sounds good, I have lots of resources for finding, not so much for the fixing and striking.

The terrain also offers some interesting challenges

The southern area is very open and flat
The northern is forested hills and very close terrain

I also need to think about tempo and speed – especially early.

Ideally, I would love to get into the area of the VP locations right away and defend/screen forward. To do this, I would need to move very quickly out of the starting locations.
This could be very dangerous, as I would be moving blind against an soviet force that I’m not sure of where it is or how powerful it is.

I like the idea of dictating the battle, so I need to find the soviet forces quickly and figure out what they are trying to do.
The ground around Cat is very important and I need to dominate/control it.

Given my lack of knowledge of the soviets intention and structure, I need to be flexible.

With the focus of their efforts on Cat, I like options 1 and 3 best.
Need to decide which one gives my the most flexibility

Choice
Option 3 gives me the most flexibility, while still focusing on Cat.

Pair of Recce sections with avenger support - Move along L3089 and then to north of Cat
Pair of Recce sections with avenger support - Move along B62 and then into Cat
Pair of recce section - reserve
Tk Pls - Follow northern recce pair
A Mortar Pl - Set up in Anzefahr

Eyes Orders

Move into area east of Betziesdorf
Be prepared to attack soviets outside Dog, Cat and Mouse

Fang orders

Deploy near Anzefahr
Use Mines and ICM to slow down soviet movement
Use smoke to blind soviet tanks and APCs
