Status: offline 		I liked that one when I was around that age too. Part of what got me interested in battleships. Too bad the lyrics are not accurate.

I liked most of the other Johnny Horton hits too - North To Alaska, Battle of New Orleans, etc.

Status: offline 		As my wife says, I'm "thrifty" and I can still remember the first song I played on one of those old dinner table jute box things, you know, the ones that were at the table in your local greasy spoon and you could select songs from it. I played Horton's Battle of New Orleans, for a nickle. I was thinking of all the other things I could buy with a nickle but decided to play this tune. I don't think I've ever used one of those table jute box things since. And yes, it was a long time ago....

I do miss those table side juke boxes. Whitey's restruant and bar in East Grand Forks had them right up to the 1997 flood. Still a drive-in theater up in Warren Minnesota about 40 miles Northeast of here. Quite a popular place in the summer.

We kids had The Big Rock Candy Mountain as a single vinyl record back in the day. The record was red or yellow - a little extra to appeal to the kids when all the other records were black.

Status: offline 		Remember singing it in grade school. Don't recall if we sang the same lyrics though. Up here you never know. We sang a lot of songs in school and Sunday school back then that would shock todays generation.

Status: offline 		This one is real bad. But we sang it in junior high boys chior (circa 1972-1974), Mr. Ramsey made us all do the actions. My voice was changing trying out for high school chior and failed miserably for bartone. I never sang again. Except for this one. Especailly at the of the movie 'The Jerk' and act it out. I must have sat at a booth like that with that song selector a thousand times. You'd wait for all the songs some other goofs picked at other booths before yours played. "Somewhere, [ba-dup ba-dup] beyond the sea, [ba-dup ba-dup] waiting for me, [ba-dum ba-dum] my lover stands on golden shores watchin' the ships, they go sailin'"

There was a Dog 'n Suds not too far away. They had root beer but they had something no other drive-in had. Grape soda. When you went there it didn't matter if you liked root beer better, you got the grape soda because there was no where else that had that and this point in your life might never come again. Dog 'N Suds had a mascot that looked like a rip-off of Pluto (the cartoon hound) and was carrying a tray in one hand that looked like it had a float and a burger on it. I remember many times we'd drive on right past that place and I'd look longingly at it thinking I'd really like a grape soda just now. Later, when I was older, and much more sophisticated, I had a summer job when I wasn't going to college at an A&W drive in. We had car-hops who worked for tips! Imagine that. Those clunky aluminum two-way speakers you hung on your car window. You'd often as not drop them and they'd hit the asphalt below, but they were indestructable and at the same time unitelligible when someone was trying to talk to you. It sounded like the teacher in a Charlie Brown cartoon, "Wah wah, wah wah wah wah." There was a KFC next door. Many times I would make cole slaw for the both of us, put it in those little foam containers that were unmarked and carry a big tray of those over to the KFC for them to sell. I knew the owner of the A&W and he didn't own the KFC, it was just a matter of convenience. Sometimes they'd make the cole slaw.

There are diners with those sorts of juke boxes today. There is one in Vancouver, WA called the Starlight. I think it's a chain.

Status: offline 		Talking about that, we have, among others, two main sorts of diners. Courtesy Diners (I try to effect a southern accent when vocalizing that) and EAT-RITE diners. I think the slogan for them is EAT-RITE or don't eat at all.

Status: offline 		The Starlight is a 50s style diner. Lots of neon and chrome. The food is decent, but not the best cuisine around. It's in a neighborhood with a lot of other restaurants, many of them with better food. Though it is a good place to get breakfast fare in the evening if that's what you're in the mood for.

Status: offline 		We also have this: Uncle Bills Pancake House. They are open 24/7 and their menu looks like a Howard Johnson's menu. I know people who are addicted to buckwheat pancakes but I personally favor the chicken-fried steak.
