Our first unit has arrived on the outskirts of Port Arthur and we appear to be facing about 14,000 troops. Our movement is still subject to air interdiction and so additional units are one to a few days away.

A smaller attack will be made tomorrow by the two divisions which rested today and the armored unit with the lowest disruption. All the artillery will act in support.

The bombers did fly against Yokohama/Yokosuka today and made quite a splash. A number of merchants and maybe a destroyer were sunk and the airfield heavily damaged, including the destruction of a number of aircraft on the ground. It was a tough fight in the air and flak was heavy but our fighter escorts kept bomber losses to a minimum. The fighter sweeps arrived just after the last strike mission and reported "No CAP over target, what's all the fuss?".

Hard fought battles in the air over the Home Islands today, and while air to air results were heavily in our favor the sum of ops losses mitigated that success. Our sweeps did greatly pacify the air space over Maizuru before any bombers - wtih good escort - arrived. Tokyo was swept so well that late day anti-shipping strikes by naval 4EB suffered no losses.

Very stout resistance at Kobe, but reducing the fortification level shold help naval bombardments be more effective. Speaking of which, the shore guns at Kobe really found the range on our battleships, and one with weak tower armor will head to Nagasaki/Sasebo for repairs. The slower RN battleships, all in good repair, will arrive at Kochi tomorrow to begin work on Kobe with their USN allies. Our artillery at Kobe will continue bombarding even though that might slow the infantry's recovery. Reinforcements of infantry, artillery, and armor will be available once the Sea of Japan coast route is cleared.

Nagasaki/Sasebo Repair shipyard is up to 133,000 tons capacity and will repair 3 more per day for the next 17 days then 2 per day thereafter. Battleships already in the yard (including pier side) there are:
Name - Days to Repair
Tennessee - 43
Prince of Wales - 11
Howe - 8
King George V - 8
Richelieu - 13
Renown - 38

When Oklahoma gets there she will need about as much work as Tennessee.

Again most line troops will all rest tomorrow while a single division attacks, with great armored support than today and with the artillery and navy comtinueing to bombard in support. Artillery bombardment will also begin at Hirosaki/Aomori.

The 3rd Marine Division is now at Yamagata and will attack tomorrow. The B-29's will assist, while the B-24's and a number of other types will strikes troops moving to Yamagata from Sendai. Yamagata is good defensive terrain and we will take a shot at capturing it or weakening its defenses before they are bolstered.

The battleship force that bombarded Maizuru subsequently found and dispatched a convoy/TF of LB that our destroyers have been hunting for several days.

I'm curious, do feel at this point, were the game mapped onto reality, that the Japanese would have surrendered?

The Emperor, yes.

The hard-liners who tried to depose the Emperor on the eve of his surrender speech - who knows. Some of them might literally have been willing for millions to perish as the country was invaded and the population also suffered the starvation that was already (absent outside aid) coming in the winter of '45/'46. Others might have at some point changed their minds.

Our forces are recovering but it will take a few days. As our artillery currently on scene at Kobe is over matched they will stop bombardments until reinforced, except to support assaults.

Pretty good for a minor artillery bombardment. We will wait for more power on the line and more naval and air support to be available before assaulting.

Again good casualty results for a small attack. One division and one tank battalion will attack tomorrow with full artillery support. Although her vitals have been protected by armor, New Mexico has had some AA guns and all her radars knocked out. Other battleships also have some AA guns out of operation.

The 4th is in good enough shape to attack again tomorrow. Pity that the fortifications were not reduced.

The bombardment of Niigata by 4x USN fast battleships was meant to disrupt air operations there and was splendid. Our much less crowded force at Maizuru is basically ready to attack but will take an additional day of recovery to allow a USN 4x fast battleship TF to get on station for bombardment. It's a two day run from Hakodate.

Imperial reinforcements that were hit by air strikes leaving Sendai arrived in Yamagata before the assault. The casualty ratio is still very favorable but our guys will rest for a day.

Tomorrow the 3rd Marine Division will take up positions on the outskirts of Sendai. With some units from Sendai at or moving to Yamagata and others having moved out by rail (air strike Intel) the division should be able to take that Clear terrain location.

Still a good trade for only one division attacking but now all divisions have 20% or greater disruption. Tomorrow two divisions (20% and 22% disruption) will attack supported by most of the armor and all of the artillery. The other divisions and armor will go into reserve to speed recovery. The B-24's will assist.

The next attack at Maizuru is tomorrow. The B-29's will assist.

Attack at Wakayama tomorrow. Modest resistance expected in good defensive terrain.

How close are you to triggering the Soviet activation with your gains in Manchuria? It would be funny if you crossed the threshold just as the Soviets were about to activated automatically anyway.

I can't tell. Mukden, Anshan, and Antung (on the border below Anshan) all have > 60,000 Imperial troops and there are many bases where I don't have recon. This last turn there were a total of 915 squads/other devices destroyed in the combat reports in Manchuria; I wonder what that equates to in terms of garrison numbers?

We have the Port Arthur battle underway (> 32,000 enemy) and should be able to engage at Kirin, but maybe not at Antung by 1 August. It will be close!

I wonder if you will be able to get to Seoul before the game ends. Would be a quite comprehensive reconquest of the Japanese empire occupied territories :)

Ah! The Chinese Army will not be crossing the border into Korea, so that would be a Soviet advance. I'm pushing as hard as I can on Honshu so I really don't know how much time is left.

Unexpected! A size 9 airfield complex, base forces are rushing in. Fighters flew in before sunset because Imperial death gliders have launched a renewed and strengthened effort against our force closing on Antung, causing hundreds of casualties. About 14,000 enemy troops remain at Port Arthur.

Alaska and Guam will go back to bombeding Kobe for now. Both are OK, but the destroyers need yard time.

Flak over Hiroshima/Kure was absolutely murderous and most groups operating in that area - most of them 5,000 ft or lower - have stood down. British 4EB will make strikes on the airbase to destroy supply but increase altitude to 15,000 ft.

The fortifications at Ominato were reduced to 1 so I think we will see faster prrgess. Notice that 4 small units have been destroyed over the past 3 days (today's victim as yet unidentified). Tomorrow two different divisions, one armored unit, and all the artillery make an attack.

The 3rd Marine Division will attack into Sendai tomorrow against about 12,000 Imperials, some of whom are moving toward Yamagata. Adequate units have moved overland from Hachinohe and are unloading at Akita that the Australian 3rd Division is being freed up and will move on Yamagata to reinforce the US 4th Marine Division. Also reinforcing at Yamagata will be the two armored units now at Hirosaki/Aomori, since no assault will be made there until units are available from Ominato. Various units that have entered via Tsu are making there way to Kanazawa but will take several more days to get there.

There are 357 fighters at Tokyo that only minimally respond to sweeps; I fear they are mostly kamikaze.
