3 Custom Scenarios that are linked together for the Battle of Fontenay-Le-Pesnel. These scenarios take units from one scenario to the next.

Name: Operation Martlet: Fontenay-le-Pesnel Village Part1
Date: 25th June 1944
Location: In the rural lowlands West of Caen, France

History: Operation Martlet (also known as Operation Dauntless) was part of a series of British attacks
to capture the town of Caen and its environs from German forces during the Battle of Normandy of World
War II begun by the Allies. It was a preliminary operation undertaken on 25 June 1944 by XXX Corps of
the British Second Army, to capture Rauray and the area around Noyers.

At noon on the 25th, the Tyneside Scottish moved up to le Haut d'Audreu to secure the area and the 1/4th
King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry advanced with the 24th Lancers through the 4th Lincolns, from the
hamlet of Bas de Fontenay (Lower Fontenay), west of Fontenay village along the Juvigny road, to objective
"Walrus" at Tessel Wood on the spur north of Vendes. The infantry advanced uphill and had made 100 yards
(91 m) in four minutes behind a dense creeping bombardment, when a German Nebelwerfer bombardment began,
slowing the advance and causing many casualties. The battalion eventually advanced 1-mile (1.6 km) to the
edge of the wood. A counter-attack was repulsed and the 24th Lancers knocked out two German tanks.

On the left flank, in the 147th Infantry Brigade area, the 11th Royal Scots Fusiliers advancing towards
"Barracuda" on the northern fringe of Fontenay, disappeared into the mist and immediately had many
casualties. Soldiers held on to each other to maintain direction and when the sun rose, snipers and
machine-gunners in their path began to inflict more losses.

Scenario Tactical Overview
German: Squads, LMG, MMG, HMG, Ordnance, AFV, OBA
British: Squads, LMG, MMG, Flamethrower, Mortar, Piat, Ordnance, AFV

Special Scenario Rules:

1) You should only play as the British side during these linked scenarios.

2) This is the first of three scenarios for the village of Fontenay-le-Pesnel. See below for special
instuctions for further scenarios. For this scenario place all of your units as you would normally do.

Linked Scenario Special Rules:

Each scenario will increase the playable area of the map and give the player reinforcements. When you
finish a scenario you should record the final location of all British units that are unbroken. You will
position replacement units in the same hexes at the start of the next scenario. Reinforcements will arrive
at the start of each new scenario and come in from the north. It will be assumed that between scenarios
broken units will be taken off the frontlines and replaced by fresh units, and some units will gain or
lose equipment.

While playing through these scenarios keep in mind the goals that you must achieve. If you miss out on
just one point during a playthrough that could make a big difference between a victory and a defeat. Also
keep in mind units final location at the end of a scenario. These locations will be used for the following
scenario, but more importantly if you don't have any units on the frontlines that could be extra time wasted
trying to move units up which inturn could make each additional scenario even more difficult. Try and find
a good balance between getting your units moved up into good positions for the next scenario and pushing
too hard and getting your units broken. Remember only units that are unbroken and not destroyed will be
deployed on the frontlines, you should take extra care to make sure these units survive intact.

The Linked Scenario Outline:

Part 1- British player must secure 2 reinforced buildings that are the German advanced guard to the Village.
Each of these Buildings are worth 1 victory point towards the final total. (this area is north of the main
village of Fontenay-le-Pesnel.)

Part 2- The British player must now rush into the village of Fontenay-le-Pesnel and get to key locations.
This will be a building by building, street by street, fight on the main part of the village. There are 3
key locations in the town which the British player must secure for victory points to add to his total.
(This will be the main part of the Fontenay-le-Pesnel village.)

Part 3- The British player must now hold everything they have sacrificed so much for. Beware, the sounds
of German tanks can be heard off in the distance as a massive counter-attack is crossing the river Le
Bordel and headed to retake Fontenay-le-Pesnel. The British player is now the defender of the village
and will setup first using the rules from above. Once again this small village will see bloodshed for
the third time in just one day. Keep hold of the 3 key locations, for each held at the end of this
scenario 1 victory point will be awarded.

At the end of the third scenario the British player will have a total score from all 3 scenarios. His
total number of victory points will determine his final vitory.

British Major Loss 0-1
British Minor Loss 2-3
Tie 4
British Minor Victory 5-6
British Major Victory 7-8

Maps: Two maps

Terrain: Wooded Terrain with some brush and orchards, roads and buildings which are part of a village.

Scenario Length: 8 Full Game Turns

Victory Objective: Hold the three Victory Point locations to earn points towards linked scenario goal.

Just finished scenario 1, I got a British Major Victory (got some lucky rolls :-) ). During the setup for scenario 2 I saw that hex row 11 is no longer available for setup. I had some troops that ended scenario 1 on some good positions on that hex row... No big deal I just moved them up one row. I just wanted to let you know in case that this is something you missed during testing ... Very fun scenario, starting number two right now.

thanks guys for playing and the update.... sounds too easy for scenario 1.... might have to make it harder. I will also adjust the setup boxes. I think I adjusted them after setting up scenario 2. I will go back and adjust them and upload the new files. Thanks again guys.

When I play tested scenario 1 it came down to a half squad and leader that fight off 2 full squads for possion of one of the victory hexes. I decided to make it slightly easier for everyone else. I might have to go back to the previous setup and make is slightly more challenging.

Any feedback is appricated... thanks!!!

I just finished scenario 2 and got a minor victory with 2 VP locations (the one on my right flank and the one in the center). The enemy OBA really messed up my advance and I got way more casualties that I would have liked, the OBA even managed to kill one of my Churchills on the last turn . I played scenarios 1 and 2 on normal difficulty (not a big fan of the C&C mechanics) and will also play no.3 on normal. The AI put up a good fight and even managed to mount a small counterattack for the center VP location on the last turn... Will setup scenario 3 and play it later this week. I will let you know how it went. I really like the way you implemented these linked scenario and am looking forward to more .

Great report Doraniner... thanks so much. Sounds like scenario 2 is about right in hardness, challening but not overly too much.

I look forward to your report on scenario 3 soldier... Salute'

Finished scenario 3, sorry if this is more a short AAR than a short report, I got a bit carried away

Due to the high casualties I suffered on scenario 2 my starting setup was far from optimal...But I was able to delay the German advance as best I could... Enemy OBA immobilized one of my Sherman and eliminated the squad with the MMG at the start of turn 2 and another one of my Sherman broke its MA on the same turn...

Turn 3 : German still advancing and the Sherman with the broken MA got immobilized by a Pz4, my Churchill and another Sherman also broke their MA ...

Turn 4 : None of my AFV with broken MA were able to repair their guns so I had 3 AFVs with unusable MA and 2 immobilized ones, lots of broken squads and fading hope...

Turn 5 : One Sherman with broken MA was destroyed by a Pz4, my 2 other AFV with broken MA failed their repair rolls again ... The Germans took the VP location on my left flank (hex 18,17).

Turn 6 : One of my Sherman finally repaired its MA and managed to kill a Pz4 ! The enemy is making a big push for the center VP location... The Churchill repaired its MA at last, I now have 3 fully functioning tanks and an immobilized one way up in hex row 10...

Turn 7 : My Churchill managed to break its Coax and Bow MG on the same fire phase and my 51mm MTR also broke.. I never saw so many broken equipment in a single scenario...
I managed to break most of the enemy squads near my left flank VP location (hex 18,17) and will try to retake it this turn...

Turn 8 : I was able to retake the VP Location in hex 18,17... The Germans just ran out of time and I was able to keep the 3 VP locations, but barely and with a lot of casualties... So with 7VP I got a Major Victory.

All in all a very fun scenario to play. Of the 3 linked scenarios the first one is the easiest, the other two are IMHO well balanced on normal difficulty. In scenario 3 there are two British leaders with a radio and only one OBA module. I also had a bug where a Pz4F2 in hex 15,29 just kept starting and stopping without moving for the entire scenario ( surely not the scenario's fault but I thought I should let you know anyway ).
I had fun playing those and will surely retry them on hard difficulty later to see how it goes...

Great report and great help... thanks so much. I guess scenario 1 was easier then the rest because I altered it just before release because I had some difficulty with it because half my squads were broken. So I figured I would make it easier for other players. I guess I just got unlucky because it seams too easy.

I will alter the setup and rules ect.... in a day or so and release update ver1.1 for anyone else that wishes to play them.

Thanks so much for all your work on this playthrough, enjoyed hearing about it greatly. I bow to your greatness for the major victory...
