Hal Moore passes away two days short of his 95th birthday. He has written a few great books of his battles and time going back to Vietnam. This guy was a real Hero. Good guy, I wish I could have met him.

It's these strong guys like him that can even live to 95, with some help from God of course.

I just learned of Moore's passing today, coincidentally from a Vietnam veteran who flew helicopters there in '70 and '71.

As my oldest son said today, when I passed the news along to him: "He was a real man."

Indeed. Moore was a real man. A leader of men.

His We Were Soldiers is the finest work of history I've ever read.

Farewell to a good soldier.

Rest in Peace and thank you for your service. I hope in his case that the mold was not broken, as we need many more like him. Definitely time to re-read We Were Soldiers.

Regards,

- Erik

Please re-read and the other few books written on the battle are great by Moore. I really like the one from a few years ago. I searched for the Lt Geoghan and his page is very well done and just sad for the little kids who never got to see their dad's.

Fiddler's Green

Halfway down the trail to Hell,
In a shady meadow green
Are the Souls of all dead troopers camped,
Near a good old-time canteen.
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddlers’ Green.

Marching past, straight through to Hell
The Infantry are seen.
Accompanied by the Engineers,
Artillery and Marines,
For none but the shades of Cavalrymen
Dismount at Fiddlers’ Green.

Though some go curving down the trail
To seek a warmer scene.
No trooper ever gets to Hell
Ere he’s emptied his canteen.
And so rides back to drink again
With friends at Fiddlers’ Green.

And so when man and horse go down
Beneath a saber keen,
Or in a roaring charge of fierce melee
You stop a bullet clean,
And the hostiles come to get your scalp,
Just empty your canteen,
And put your pistol to your head
And go to Fiddlers’ Green.

RIP Troop....
