Yamamota sat perplexed as he read the orders at Combined Fleet Headquarters. An admiral in Argentina was to take control of all Japanese forces in the Pacific theatre? Perhaps, even more perplexing to Yamamota was the news from Washington. The Japanese embassy had recently informed the imperial foreign office that the U.S. admiralty had turned over control of the Pacific theatre to a young army general from... Slovakia.

The AAR will document the heroic, desperate, and improbable battle between Argentina and Slovakia for control of the Pacific during the 2nd World War. Aurorus, in Argentina, will be in command of the Japanese, and 821Dobo of Slovakia will command the allied war effort.

This AAR will focus mostly on After action reports and commentary, rather than the details of strategy. It is open to 821Dobo, and I have invited him to add his comments whenever he likes.

It is a PDU:off game. The only "hard and fast" house rules are to pay political points for restricted units to cross political boundaries and the usual first-turn restrictions on the allies: only move existing TFs, no re-basing air units or forming new TFs. We also have a "gentleman's agreement" not to do anything absurd: i.e. use carriers to resize air units to unrealistic sizes and so forth.

Both players prefer to remain within the bounds of what was possible historically, so much as possible. 821Dobo thinks that large Japanese amphibious TFs moving deep into allied territory would have alerted the allies and cancelled the Dec. 7th surprise. I cannot argue with this logic. As such, I have also agreed not to make "unrealistic" moves on turn 1. This resulted in a few minor changes to the intricate (and sandboxed about 30 times) opening move that I decided to use for this game. Not many, however, since, as I explained to 821Dobo, I do not like to exploit the warping TFs to make many deep moves into allied territory anyway. Sending a bunch of cargo ships loaded with divisions of irreplaceable 80 exp troops deep into enemy territory is not, in my opinion, a great idea.

So the first turn is away. First Air Fleet has left Etorofu for parts unknown. Radio silence is observed throughout the empire as the entire Japanese surface fleet slips from its moorings into the night. Where will the hammer fall first and hardest? Where will the allies defend and surprise the Japanese? It is to be War in the Pacific between those great maritime powers of antiquity: Argentina and Slovakia.

A very good Pearl Harbor strike. The strike came in at 9,000, and the Vals level bombed, taking few casualties from flak. Leaving the 80+ exp. flight commanders in the squadrons, instead of sending them to training squadrons, resulted in a more accurate attack.

Meanwhile, over Luzon, the U.S. commander received notice of a submarine attack at Pearl and sorted his aircraft in numbers. Fortunately for the Japanese, the air coordination was perfect. The sweeps came in ahead of the raids, and the raids were coordinated.

This could have been a very bad day for Japan over Luzon with 70 allied cap fighters scrambling. The perfect air coordination of the Japanese strikes was not owing to fortune entirely. I spent a lot of my political points ensuring that all of my air HQs and squadrons had the best commanders. I also transfered one of the zero wings, with its detachments, to the 21st Air HQ from the 23rd, to ensure that both bomber groups had sweeping fighters and escort fighters attached to the same HQ. Also notice that all the Betties struck Manilla, while the Gnells struck Clark Field. By using the same type of plane in each strike, I increased the probability of good coordination. Since the Manila strike had bombers from both Air HQs, fighter detachments from each HQ flew escort for that strike.

As the air forces battled over Luzon, Japanese amphibious task forces landed at Iba, Lingayen, and Mauben. The invasion at Iba was preceded by a shore bombardment from a heavy cruiser squadron, causing significant damage to the P-40s that were not involved in the fight over Manilla and Clark Field. The invasion at Lingayen was accompanied by 2 BBs to soften up the shore batteries there ahead of the landing.

Very nice, I wanted to do something similar but house rules did not allow for a LBA port strike so the Bettys hit Clark and Iba with just escorts and no sweeps.
I hoped the surprise would make the CAP less dangerous but it was still bad.

As evening fell over Malaysia, a large Japanese landing commenced at Khota Bharu. The allies also detected Japanese transports at Patani and Singora. The battleship Kongo was also sighted and attacked about 250 east of Kuantan by a handful of allied bombers still able to sortie from Kuantan. A5M4s from a nearby Japanese CV task force were flying CAP.

I only hit the port with 1 squadron of Betties, the rest hit the airfield. Of course, there was nothing on the airfield to hit, since all the fighters had scrambled. That is ok though. The A6M2s did a good job and accomplished the task that I had set out to do. The bomb hits on the ships in port look worse than the damage actually is. Most of the bomb hits were 60 kg bombs, so I doubt anything sunk.

Surely there is no exaggeration. I have instructed my digital aides to be as accurate as economists in their reports. But, yes, FOW and the AAR lists exaggerated numbers of �hits on planes,�not �planes hit.� Therefore, the same plane could be dammaged twice and show up as 2 planes damaged, or even three, or four.

Well... I'm Latin American in that I live in Latin America and speak Spanish. Argentina has immigrants from all over the world, however: Italians, Germans, Jews, Gypsies (there are traveling carnivals), Romanians, and Chinese (more every day). There is a Ukranian landlord in my town, two Chinese grocery stores, a Japanese dry cleaner, a Bolivian brick-maker, a German construction company, and the Saudi royal family recently bought 1,000 hectares of farmland nearby.

Torpedo boats and the British destroyers based at Hong Kong made their way south to get into the action and try to disrupt the Luzon landings. The British DDs encountered a small squadron of Japanese torpedo boats on their way to Luzon to link up with those already covering the landings. The outgunned Japanese torpedo boats held their own in the engagment.

A front moved in over Pearl in the morning. First Air Fleet moved north, but could not escape the squall. As the seas calmed a bit in the afternoon, Nagumo was able to turn his carriers into the wind and launch his fighters to sweep Pearl. The storm raged over Pearl, however, and made air combat difficult. The the battle was indecisive.

Indeed. The Penguin proved mighty.

In the darkest hours of December 8th, when all leaked glum for the allies, an unlikely hero emerged. Just south of Guam, the USS Penguin encountered enemy forces. As the Japanese task force withdrew, the Penguin pursued with determination, leaving 2 Japanese ships burning in the night.
