Japanese building ships in Colombo!

My headline is somewhat misleading, as Japanese banks will just provide 80% of the loan to fund the construction of three patrol craft for the Sri Lanka coast guard. Nice picture of the Colombo dockyard:

The US has a Special Operations Base in Djibouti. Among other things this is where most of the attacks on Al Qaeda in Yemen originate. Saw a report that Djibouti is letting China build a naval base not far away.

It is often said in this forum that "I learn something new everyday". I'm having the opposite problem, forgetting something old everyday.

Is that an early version of a DUKW?

I think it would have eaten the DUK.

Yeah, I remember the times when we didn't worry about being PC. That photo would stir up a sh******* today.

Oh, let's go ahead and stir something up. I'm pretty sure that's an alligator. Anybody ready to call it a crocodile?

Snout looks pointed and v-shaped, which is more consistent with a crocodile. But it's hard to tell from this angle.

There's a third choice, too: cayman.

I try not to agree with you any more than I have to. Snout is round and dorsal spines on tail are more laterally located and smaller than a crocodile. It's a 'gator.

What would that Southern girl be doing with a cayman? They teach them better than that down there.

I remember the old days when we could hitch up a team of twenty 'gators to pull a wagon of borax all the way to Kansas City. You young whippersnappers don't remember those days. We had it hard.
