I'm currently playing 006 - Battle of the Lastekodumägi using the VASL Mod and the game has slowed down considerably when trying to route a unit or fire a tank MA that keeps RoF. This is my second scenario i've played but the first where this has happened. It takes a long time for the action to resolve. Sometimes the sound o firing happens first before the actual event occurs.

I deleted the shortcut as suggested on another thread and made a new one but the lag is still happeneing.

dxdiag attached.

I went back in and tried it with the stock graphics and it is still playing very slow at every attempt to move a unit, route a unit or fore after causing casualties or breaking a unit. It is to the point of unplayable now. Oh and each time it lags, it deselects the units that were moving.

You could try and download the free Razer Cortex program. It frees resources for your CPU. It has helped some of the gamers speeding up the game. It looks like your CPU is pushed to its limits.

I'll try that. This is the one thing I hate about Windows is all the crap it loads without one knowing it.

I agree, it is very annoying.

is it a clean install of windows 10? or a upgrade from a older version of windows?

pc is plenty quick enough for the game, but like everything in life, it's never that simple.

i use ccleaner, but there are other programs which do the same thing for free, i run it, which cleans all the junk files from windows, and it's 100% safe and recommend as a windows 10 tool, then use it secondary features to clear the registry and fix any issues, then i also use another feature and disable all startup apps and programs that aren't needed to run each and every boot, so all that's left for me is,

well steam and my AV, and i use the one which is inbuilt to windows 10 btw, and that's it.

i disable everything else, so nothing runs in the background, eg weather, calendar, news, xbox and even email, as why use them each and every boot anyway, loads fine when i want to use them, which isn't all the time imo.

disable screen saver and set power use to max, not power saving by default, when i'm away from the pc, i turn off the monitor, or it goes into power saving mode on it's own anyway, as it's a new modern one, that does it without the need for windows telling it..

I downloaded and tried this program. I ran the boost shutting down a bunch of the background programs. I then ran the game and it still runs slow.

I don't have time today as I will be off doing some tabletop gaming, but tomorrow I'll sit down and clean up the machine and see if I can get it running better.

Upgrade from Win 8.

I've run ccleaner before, or so I remember. I need to clean this machine up.

only mentioned it, as i'm also on windows 10, and it's working fine on my end, so hopefully you will get it fixed also, as 9 out of 10 times, it's pc related and not the game as such

And thanks for mentioning it, I couldn't remember the name of the program.

Sigh, our love-hate relationship with MS Windows.

i'm very happy with it tbh,

then again i only upgrade to get it free, then wiped it and reinstalled a fresh install of windows, no key was needed, as M/S keeps a copy of your hardware once upgraded, so was all well and good, changed out 3 parts and still it's fine and not an issue, have wiped it 3 times since with 3 newer version of windows 10 coming out, and no issue what so ever, but yes it does load up some junk most of the time, takes all of 5 mins to clear it mind you, backs up to the cloud, same with steam, so a reinstall on a SDD takes all over 12 mins, including data transfer, so can't complain, newer version out in April, so will be wiping again then as well

I'm still having issues.

Today I cleaned up the computer. Cleaned up the registry, old files, took icons off the desk top, paired down startup program icon on the desktop, defragged etc.

I then ran the scenario and no change, the game still lags at moving units. I then closed the game and ran Razer and shut down everything that it would allow me to shut down and ran then game. It still lags. Note that I stopped using the VASL mod and went back to stock graphics. The game still lags.

So I closed the game and ran a different scenario: 004 - Counterattack at Bardenberg. The game seems to run fine as I worked through the first few moves of the first turn. I even forced some d-fire to see if briging up enemy units matter. The game ran normally.

I'm wondering if the scenario is the problem; it is: 006 - Battle of the Lastekodumägi. When I start the saved game file of this scenario I notice something odd happening, the map briefly appears then the whole map area goes white and i have to wait a bit for the map to come up. This is the only scenario I've noticed this happening. I've attached a new DxDiag file that I made while running the lagging scenario after cleanup and running Razer Cortex.

may or could be speed related, but only way to be fully sure, is wipe and reinstall a fresh install of windows, then if you have no errors in your logs, and game still is slow or slower, then something in the pc mix doesn't like the game, either hardware or software wise, pointing to one part or another is hard remotely.

as it's only in this one and not any of the others? that's the odd part tbh

It might be a long shot, but your issue could be related with a broken audio codec.
Have you installed any video/audio codec pack?

I suggest you to edit the "Configuration.ini" file and disable the "SoundFX". Run the game and check if the issue persists.
I'm not sure if this will stop the game from making calls to the sound libraries, but you could try this.

Not that I know of. I installed the red Thunder Demo from battlefront. Could that do anything?

I went in and changed it to read: SoundFX=No

However, the sound of the moving soldiers stilled played and there was still considerable lag in the action taking place.

I then clicked off Sound FX, and there was still lag... but no sound.

Fred - readying this thread intently, because I am having all the same issues you are. Anything larger than a small scenario - say 20-30 units on both sides, and my game slows to an absolute crawl as well.

Please try to disable all background programs in case these are interfering with the normal running of the game.
You can do this by running msconfig and disabling all non-windows start-up programs and services.
Then once you have disabled all non-Microsoft services, please run the game and see if the issue persists.
If it does not, please then reopen msconfig and reenable those services, one by one, until you find the program causing the problem.

A tutorial on how to do this can be found below:

I did as you suggested with the tutorial above and it did not work. I tried three times as I noticed that it was not shutting everything down when I went through the procedures. The game still ran slow as it has been. On the third attempt, the computer got stuck on the restart and would not boot. Now it will not run Windows at all as it appears to have wiped out the registry. I cannot get a log in screen although the he time and date screen comes up... No log in bar will come no matter what I try. I cannot get it to go into safe mode. Startup repair does nothing. I be tried a system restore to a previous point, it will not work. I've tried a recovery USB but it is not large enough to put on system files so I can't get it to work. I try to go back to a previous build, it won't find it. This attempt has pretty much killed my machine.

I'm sorry to hear what happened, but the process is harmless.
I suspect that three might be something wrong with your system. You should perform a test to your RAM and your HD.

I still play this game...but I count the time between each ordinary move including infantry and tanks, and it is about 5-10 seconds on each move on average. I am a home studio recording amateur, and my 2013 Samsung laptop with an i7 16GB RAM and an SSD can handle a lot of processing power. While I agree that Win 10 background programs running is a problem, disabling them if you don't know what you're doing is ill-advised. There are many, many games and programs that manage to run without the slowness displayed by TOTH. The game is great, but it has a serious problem for many in how it runs.

Hello Baloo,

Sorry, but MSConfig is a default Windows service, and as long as you are not disabling any Windows services then this is in fact harmless to the computer, and in fact beneficial if anything. Most programs which install on a computer, especially non-game programs, install background processes and MSConfig is a safe and quick way to disable all of these and speed up your computer with one easy step. Provided you are following the instructions provided and not disabling Windows processes then there is no damage caused. Also the process is the very easily reversible as you can just re-enable any processes.

With some parts of the computer, e.g. the registry, then yes it is extremely ill-advised to start changing things if you do not know what you are doing, but in terms of the startup processes on Windows this only stops things from starting at startup. There are other options within MSConfig, such as Services, which does affect active services, but again hiding the Windows services will stop you from disabling key Windows process.

OK, I completely reinstalled Win 10. Then I loaded MS Office and iCloud. Nothing else. I then installed TotH, updated it and then ran the save file, that I backed up to a removable drive. I go to move the same unit that I have been testing with and I get the same lag. Latest dxdiag attached.

TOTH slow because:

1-programmes non-windows---->User (clean it)
2-services windows---------->Windows (deconnect internet from the box)
3-last patch---------------->Peter works on it

I'm wrong???

Today I did a little experiment. I ran Razer Cortex, boosted, and then the game. I then brought up the scenario (006-Lastekodumagi)(human Soviet v Computer german) save that I've been having problems with and played it. I could tell it was going to lag as the screen (map area) went white as the scenario loaded. Once up, I tried to move units and got he same terrible lag before the move was executed. I then closed the scenario.

I then started the same scenario but as a new game. This time I turned FoW off. I played the scenario up to the same point in the previous one (Soviet Turn 2 movement segment). The game played fine, no lag.

So:

1. Can the FoW setting have anything to do with this issue?

2. Could my first playing of the scenario got corrupted somehow?

The scenario saves are in the attached zip file.

Lastekodumagi.sav is the original save. It lags
Lastekodumagi-New.sav is the same playing as above but saved under a different name just to see if it changes. It lags
Lastekodumagi_test.sav is the replay of the scenario from start after reinstalling Windows 10 etc. It works fine.

I can only load the "lastekodumagi_test.sav" the other two crashes my game once I load them.
It looks like they are corrupted, but only the developer can tell for sure.

Well, somehow those early two got corrupted on my previous install of the game. The only change I did was swap out graphics and settled on the VASL graphic and played with that one. Could that have caused an issue?

Same issue here...
Playing with no problems until the second day on the Bled White scenario. Maybe too many units, and too many calculations to do?
I'm running it with a HP laptop i5 5200U CPU RAM:8Gb with W10 clean install.
