LCU combat problems

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am actually playing a game in Scenario 2 as Japan and I have a lot of problems with the LCU combat.
Especially in paces where the Allies have a lot of AV (e.g. Manila, and some cities in China).
Meanwhile the fortification is very high and the AV of my troops is very low.

So I have some questions:
-1- How is the best strategy to reduce the fortifications (are there some special ENG troops which do better than others)?
-2- How to reduce the opponents AV in a best way to avoid too much losses on the own side?
-3- How does the Reserve setting works exactly?
-4- Does it make sense to switch between the own LCU that always some LCU´s attack only?
-5- Is there some effect, if only a low amount of AV is attacking, or is it better to attack all together?
-6- How is the best way to bring the own AV back to maximum in opponent hexes?

Eager to read the many reactions;

meanwhile and as far as I know, there's nothing better than combat engineers to break down fortifications; they differ between themselves only for experience and commanders; but don't send them alone in battle without cover from other units, lest they call on themselves all of the enemy fire;
also, regular infantry divisions have their organic combat engineer squads embedded; the divisions divided in regiments intead, have their own Engineers regiment for themselves;
only when they''ll manage to reduce the fortification level, to 0, after much toil, sweat and blood and several bloody attacks, so then you typically start see resultsa in your attack- i.e., not abysmal own casualtiels against lower enemy's

second best way to deal with fortifications; shells, shells, shells and bombs and more shells, either from naval or land big caliber guns, or airplanes; they don't affect the fortification itself (pretty weird), but the troops fortified in; closure/blockade of the defending garrison, to prevent resupply; prolongued isolation and lack of supply shall impede the defenders from reorganize, and it shall also drastically reduced teir combat values;time and patience; possibly, two sets of land units to attack to rotate, so that the defending garrison shall be left with the shortest or nil time to reorganize between attack and attack; closeness of the corpsand or army HG, in range, to speed up reorganization of beaten up units and provide combat bonuses-enhancements;

finally, and all embracing, patience and organization;

1 - Combat engineers
2 - Bombardment by land, sea, air
3 - Reserve will commit AFAIK, when being attacked, not when doing the assault
4 - Specify... You can leave troops in Defend, as in not to bombard or deliberate/shock attack
5 - Full commitment
6 - Rest... lots of supplies, good admin level of commander, preferably a command HQ in range

1. Look for combat engineers squads. They are typically in special ENG assault units or built into infantry divisions. Assault also can decrease forts, so results for 1 depend on the answer to 2, which is...
2. Reducing opponents' supply is the main strategy for keeping own losses low. Killing progresses a lot when you reduce enemy supply to zero by bombing/bombardments while encircled. When enemy is on clear terrain hex, air bombing helps a lot with redicing AV too. Not so for other terrains
3. Lots of stuff useful here and there. Depends on what you mean by "exactly" because nobody knows how exactly the game calculates many of the things. Reserve mode does not allow units to take part in immediate attack/defence. Will pursuit the enemy if attack makes enemy retreat, will take part in fighting in defence of other units fail to stop the enemy.
4. rephrase the question
5. AV is not the only, or in some cases even main indicator of fighting strength. E.g. you can have weaker INF unit but lots of ART for support, and the latter will shoot up the opposition even before infantry attack. Or you can have tanks rolling over INF (hapless Chinese hordes in 42, or hapless Japanese infantry in 44, I'm looking at you)
6. Rotate beaten LCUs out of the combat hex and rest them in base with lots of supply and support, divided into A/B/C parts if possible

One thing you mentioned that hasn't been addressed....You said the AV of your troops is low. You should be looking to attack with superiority, probably nominally 2:1 or more AV advantage over the enemy. As GetAssista said, armor and artillery can help, but if you are attacking a superior force, you can expect heavy casualties.

Regarding #4, it sounds like you are asking about units "taking turns" attacking. Assuming I have sufficient superior forces, I try to Deliberate Attack consistently (not Shock) to keep the pressure on the enemy, but each turn I will rest one or two of my most exhausted/damaged units so they have a small breather before they fight again.

And, as others have said, Combat Engineers are the best way to reduce fortifications. If you are attacking without combat engineers, you have less chance of reducing fort levels on any given attack. As fort levels fall, your attacks will become more tilted in your favor.

Heavy artillery, daily bombing, and three HQs and troops prepped 100% with good leaders.

Tanks, Engineers.

No supply for the defenders.

Other things to consider...

Leadership ratings, specifically land since this is ground attack, but aggression as well. Not that extreme aggression is always helpful, sometimes it just means a unit will press an attack after it shouldn't.

Preparation. Units should be prepped when they attack a base. Some is better than none.

Attack with combined units. Divisions are better than individual regiments.
