Out of curiosity, was this LR CAP or was he trying to supply his units in your base and the normal CAP got them?

I gave Rio a bad time, accusing him of trying to land at my airfield. I said that the JFBs would get a good laugh on this one. He said, "Don't forget to tell them you lost a Helen... bla, bla, bla." Seems like a fair trade to me.

What you are not seeing is how many you didn't shoot down that succeeding in their airdrop.
Unfortunately, the air transport phase doesn't provide us with a combat interface to see how many planes are pitted against each other.
You have no way to know how many squadrons of transports he committed.
Given how many planes you shot down I would guess quite a few more than that succeeded in getting through.

While this type of action can be costly in transports it can also be an effective method of getting supply through if the attrition loss can be sustained.
Way back in my Uncommon Valor days I played a PBEM game wherein I had a similar situation and used the very deep allied pool of transports in that scenario to my advantage.

Hi Hans.

You are exactly correct.

Rio informed me that this was just a fraction of his transports and it was a small price to pay for supplying his troops.

However we mustn't miss this serendipitous opportunity to have a little fun at Rio's expense, even remembering what pay-back will be.

It was also nice that my Zeros did not even have to break a sweat gaining some experience.

okay el lobo, you are half way thru the game give us your impressions. I recall you wanted to a less than historical expansion or historical, with perhaps a little stronger push in China.

How do you think it is playing out?

I think it can be summed-up in the statement, the more you know, the more you realize what you don't know.

I think my expansion is fairly limited compared to most games. I look at my map and then look at others' games and think, how the hell are they doing all of that? Even with limited expansion I have way too many places to defend and no troops with which to do so. And here you and others are fighting all over the damn place and I'm thinking, where did they get all of these troops?

But overall I am happy with where I am.

China. I would attempt to take it all again except I would go for Chungking earlier, making it my main focus. I over estimated the value of Sian and underestimated the value of CK.

Ceylon. I still wish I had Ceylon but not at the expense of having three Divisions or more there. If I did it again I would hopefully be smarter with respect to the way I took it. I would take it sooner with more troops to finish it off quicker and then leave a small sacrificial force there with enough air to keep his shipping harassed for a while longer.

The same for Adak except I would take Attu first, or at the same time.

The SRA. I'm OK with where I am but I am already planning my strong points for withdrawal. I am glad that I did not go into Australia.

I am not in the Pacific. My boundary stops at Truk and Marcus. We will see how that works.

I am sure you have heard the old story of how they catch monkeys, but for those who haven't. They take a hollow coconut and attach a rope to one end and at the other end they cut a small hole just big enough for a monkey to reach through with an empty hand. They put some food in the coconut and the monkey reaches in and grabs the food but his fist is too large to remove from the hole in the coconut. The monkey refuses to let-go of the food and the hunter just walks-up and nets the monkey.

Is there any JFBs who like Burma? If it weren't for the oil at Megwe, I would not be there and the sooner I let go of that oil I think the better-off I will be in that area. What ever clever Developer put that oil there deserves his own room in the Developer's Hall of Fame. I know that I invested too much in infrastructure there. But in different circumstances it might have been OK. That is war-wise.

Game-wise, Burma has been great fun. It has given me a chance to learn and develop my game skills, especially in the air.

Thank you and all of the other players who have helped me get this far.

This is the Japanese problem in every game! it's just that unless the player on the Allied side has played Japan, it doesn't look so thin from the other side. There are a lot of mysteries that can keep the Allies at Bay, not the least the positioning of the KB.

Still, extended expansion can work if it's an area that the Allies absolutely have to take back. It's tough to do much if you're ted up in fighting for the subcontinent or all of Australia is under siege.

Yes. I like Burma. I think the Japanese have an advantage in terrain and inside lines that coupled with the issue of trying to supply the armies in the jungle and interior valleys, make this a tough place for them to advance.

I hate Burma ... with a passion.

You've just started the good part ... the next 18 months is the real fun part. You have to keep guessing, correctly, when to stay, when to leave to the next MLR. Ad nauseum. Very tricky, very easy to make a mistake and cost a lot of squads ... or even units.

Here are the numbers. You would know a great deal more about the economy than I do.

From my point of view, I am happy with HI, resources, and fuel but not with supply and oil. It seems to me that I have lots of fuel and I am trying to ship it to the HI as fast as my tanker inventory will allow, the same with resources. I would shut-off refineries for awhile if it were not for them generating supply.

Except for the HI, most of my fort, airfield and port expanding is completed. I am starting to stand-down a lot of my Navy air groups, including training groups, to save a little supply. I need to slow-down my Navy training a little anyway or I will be literally pulling guys off of the streets into the groups, if the game allows that.

The Magic Highway is still pulling oil but not as much as previously. I think that is because there is not as much out there as before. I even gave-in and took Babo and Boela just to get a little more oil.

Supply is gaining about 2K/day ... that's ok in '43 ... if you're building a lot of factories now getting ready for your final AC builds. If you're NOT, then it likely means your daily air sorties are too high ... look at those, you may be able to trim some ...

Oil is fine ... of course grab all you can, but never shut off refineries ... keep them building supply and fuel. Remember, oil is only valuable because you can convert it to supply and fuel. Keep pulling everything you can from the DEI into your inner sphere: PI, Formosa, Korea, HI.

ARM/VEH, I never turn these off. There is never too many. HI is only to used to convert to ARM/VEH/AC/SHIPS. Well, you're about done building ships as they now just become allied VP's. Sure you need AC, but you're closing in on the magic 4M, so that looks good. Keep the ARM/VEH going.

Fuel: Overall good, but you're lower in the HI than I like. However, if a big chunk of that fuel is within your inner sphere, ok. If it is still sitting in the DEI, you need to move it. Consider getting some xAK's in gear. Not nearly as efficient, but in 12 months you will start to lose it. So see what you can do with your TK fleet for a couple of months, if no progress, then get xAK's involved. I would want at least 6M of the 7.8M in the inner sphere right now ... and 4.5M in HI. So, that means you need to look at shifting +3M fuel before Dec 43 ... not hard with a bit of focue.

Resources: GOOD.

Thanks Pax.

I have ~2.5M fuel combined at Palembang and Singers. I will focus on getting this to Manila and Formosa for the near future and then the HI.

Why do you want to ship it to Formosa?

Even Luzon can be a little hard to understand depending up where the lower SRA fuel and oil is going.

You can ship fuel from Singers to CRB/HK while setting Malaya bases to stockpile. It will prevent fuel from flowing back to Singers, so it will find the way intoo China eventually

I probably won't but I may not want to put all my fuel in one basket.

quote:

Here is my thought process re Luzon.

I need to ship my fuel out of Singers, but to where? I am already shipping some to Haiphong and may ship a little more but I want something a little more certain.

I could ship it to the HI but I want to get it out of Singers as fast as I can. Between Singers and the HI, Manila is a logical in-between destination. I will use my most efficient tankers to there for the next three or four months and then depending on how it goes, move some of them to the Manila to HI route.

Most of the lower and some of the upper SRA fuel and oil are going to Manila with some going to Haiphong and some to the HI.

I tried CRB earlier in the game but it never did move out so I moved to Haiphong which has been working well. A great deal of the fuel going to the HI is coming out of China, Shanghai, Hankow, Haichow,Tsingtao, and Tientsin. The later four being used hoping it will also encourage the fuel to flow from Urumchi.

If you set you Malaya bases to stock-pile, do they actually stock-pile? If so, how much actually gets stored there? Do you set all of them? Is spoilage a problem?

My approach is simple. I shuttle all of the oil to Formosa non-stop, and from there second leg, second shuttle line to Japan proper at the same time.

Fuel at Formosa/PI is better than DEI. He's got 5M out there ... needs to move it in closer.

Rio is building strength in Mandalay but I will hold-out as long as I can. The same for the hex south-east of Prome.

CHINA May 22, 1943 Turn 532

The units that broke-out of CK to the south showed a movement arrow to the west a few turns back. I now have 850 AV in the hex to their west. Even at 4X magnification and a magnifying glass I see no arrow now.

I am moving units into the hex west of CK and will move them all at once into CK for another DA.

You basically have neglected any expansion South east of New Guinea, isn't that?

So what is your main defensive line-posts, there?

North New Guinea-Moluccas-Caroline Islands?

So what is your main defensive line-posts, there?

North New Guinea-Moluccas-Caroline Islands?

The Moluccas. Right now I am trying to decide who and how much I am going to lose at Truk.
