He's handing you time in Burma attacking with those odds. No way he'd push through.

I like the small stuff going on. Lots of little battles every day. Fun game.

I don't really understand his movements in Burma, truth be told. I have taken China...and with sl limits I just don't see what he thinks he can accomplish in the slog that is Burma. Generally, I am holding him with less than he has sent with the exception of near Katha where I look to deliver a serious setback to him.

Today he bombed, massively, the troops east of Ramree. I have AA, forts, terrain and losses are next to nothing, disruption high in one division, but the 1/3rd of a division are untouched and all that is needed to really hold the hex. Plus, I have troops moving in open...which by rights should be seriously attacked.

We have had a few dogfights over them, which he has won since I lack radar and am flying Lrcap.

I think I have a real good chance of savaging his troops near Katha...to the point that it will buy a year or more in this theater forcing him to think of invasion as the only route forward.

While the pt boat fight went on, his lsi stopped unloading and retreated, and two IJN CLs dropped a bucketfull of mines. Unfortunately, he did sweep my LRCAP with over 100 Lightnings and Tojo IIb just don't fight fighters well.

Tried something in the air against his PT boats, but of course it failed. Will try a different tactic tomorrow.

If he gets bogged down, and it's looking kind of likely... look for Burma to become a tar pit/feint. Jocke is too much of a pit fighter to let you just get away with western Asia.

I have thought of that, too. I was quite nervous while the 5th Marine was at Ramree..then he marched them east into the jungle a great weight was lifted. When his troops where on the coast, I feared greatly a Sumatra or Pegu style invasion...especially when he knew where my KB was.

Might get a turn today. I think if I do, Jocke will have rushed it, so that I get it...so I will be gentle in my offensive actions against the Allies if this proves to be the case.

July 24, 1943

I heard sinking sounds four times during the turn. One might have been a sub. Another PT Boat hit a mine at Lae, so that accounts for 2. The other two are a mystery.

Probed the Allied lines around the two isolated units, and it looks promising. I suspect I can see some heavy bombing here...

Probed the unit to the northeast and it is a very small Pioneer unit.

Subs have their own unique sinking sounds. It's very different from ship sounds. So it wasn't a sub.

No, I think one was a sub. I wasn't all that clear but it was a glub glub glub and the other were the ships.

PS: Jocke asked for to go gentle on him as it was the most rushed turn he ever flipped. I think that is not strictly true, since I know he sent turns back to Obvert without issuing any orders after a severely bad day. Or at I remember him saying he did.

Yes Lowpe, don't be gentle. After all, you're not being gentle to obvert, can't have you being unfair

One of my best units in the area, the 17th Independent Mixed Brigade was rushed as an emergency reinforcement to Buin against the Aussie division there. They fought well, but were pushed back with minor losses but 100% disablement.

Two daring fast transports later and some float plane pickups and only a handful of stragglers are left. They can now enjoy their cooks again as almost all of the support squads never left Rabaul. I am hoping they return to fighting form quickly.

There is lots happening here, and I don't detail it all. Every day I make numerous attacks, the weather or the Allies don't cooperate and most of my actions go for naught, but this is a great fun place to fight with all sorts of small tactics in play.

The Allied advance is by far so much more interesting than a 1000 ship invasion guarded by the Deathstar. I know that will come, but for now this is great fun!

PS: If I had some troops here, instead of picking potatoes in Idaho POW camps, I could have dealt the Allies some serious setbacks. Much like if I had allocated the West Coast invasion to India which I mentioned at the time. I don't think the Allies know how strong Japan really is in a scenario 2 game. Most of my destroyed units are back, but PP keep me from buying them all back. I have gotten a few released, and one will arrive in Manila shortly to finish rebuilding and training.

The Yukaze was fairly heavily damaged, but 4 AD's & naval support squads & the port of Rabaul have put her out of harms way in a couple of days. They can't fix the major the damage, but all the system damage will be gone in 8 days.

You can see where the APDs ran into the Brooklyn/Fletcher TF at Buin, trying to rush in the 2nd Kure only to be forced to retreat to Rabaul -- the mission a failure and Buin fell.

There were several other damaged APD's the AD were working on in addition to the Yukaze, although now the Yukaze is the only one left the rest leaving for Manila.

The sound effect is very different. The sinking sub sound is much more muted, more like breaking up.

How many sinking sounds are there? I heard two different types, but in truth play most turns with volume off.

There is one for subs (underwater breaking up noises) and one for ships (waves washing on the deck).

I think there might be an additional effect for if there are troops on the sinking ship (voices yelling but muted) that gets played over the waves washing on the deck noise for a ship.

Subtle clues as to what sunk .

Shortlands and Buin...

These PT boats are all that stands between the IJN and some choice ships carrying troops.

Allies have so huge an airforce, thanks to the California invasion, oversights like this are kind of funny. I can' believe the Allies can't scrape up a dozen fighters to prevent this kind of thing.

In Burma, we look to repulse the LRP Brigades, but unfortunately an Indian Division shows up...so another stalemate north of Katha. Allies continue to heavily bomb east of Ramree, but now troops are leaving that hex back towards Ramree....which is probably the 5th Marines. Time to worry about invasions again.

Japan pretty much stood down yesterday, with no aggressive attacks on the Allies. Allies sweep heavily in Burma, but none of the bases I had CAP over.

Allies bombed heavily west of Katha...but the Allies aren't making any progress there and even lost a half dozen bombers to the combination of AA/weather/accumulated wear and tear.

August is almost here, let us look a head a little.

The Oscar IV and first Frances arrives. No units fly the Frances for about a month, 2 groups will fly it in 43, growing to about 7 groups by the end game. A valuable special purpose attack plane I think. Norm arrives, but no squadrons ever fly this long legged float plane. Lilly IIc comes too, not much of an improvement over the IIb.

The US Army gets Banshees, and the British the Mosquito recon and the excellent torpedo carrying Beaufighter. Chinese get P40N.

Next month the Mustangs arrive.

Today, I am shutting down on Oscar r&d, I should have done it several days ago. Some is going into NF research. Pondering the last few changes.

I do recon counts of the number of Allied fighters present in Burma, and it is breath taking. Well over 800 that I can see on any given day. I still don't have any Jack or George capable squadron yet.

At this game date my guess it is about getting adequate air support to the right places.

Economy

I should add 500,000 supply at the HI this past month and pass the 2million supply mark (for the HI only). Fuel stocks are growing again, and surpass 2.6 million or a 222 day backlog. Hokkaido has another 300,000 fuel but only 60,000 supply.

Resources, a concern given that Olorin expanded LI by a reported 700, are growing on the HI too. They now stand at 280k, and have grown 300k in the last 30 days. Growing now everyday.

Oil is the declining resource, with only 500k in the HI, which sounds low, but there is another 1 million plus in Manchuko/Korea/China. Luzon has 80K, and there is 100K at sea.

Magwe, Rangoon are operating at full capacity.

Overall, the economy is very strong.

You should start moving that supply to where it will be needed. Doesn't matter if you have 6M supply in 1944 if it's all in Japan and not where you're actually fighting.

2 million in Japan, 4 million where I need it now. That seems a good balance right now.
