Thus far, an interesting mix of shoestring and all-in efforts by Japan, heading for a Stalingrad-at-Sydney event. But it's early yet. Has Japan neglected other conventional targets? Mindinao? Palawan?

Mines were disappointing at Wake. I was hoping the entire invasion fleet would blunder into them. He took his time getting here.

Carriers hit troop transports just south of the Andaman Islands. I'm guessing a pair of smaller carriers. My RN CVs are moving further north, out of range. I'm guessing they're what brought them in in the first place. This was the last small unit leaving Sabang. Not much to cry over.

Fingers crossed on Chitose going down, but IIRC K-XI is one that has the little 45cm torps so they would not do so much damage. No messages about fuel or ammo storage explosions in what you posted. I say 70% chance she sank. Check for float plane losses in the Intel report. I know some may have flown to nearby bases or ships, but any that were not in the air should have gone down with the ship.

The fight for Manila is bogging down and I'm resting my troops for awhile. I've lost a lot of the combat value of my forces. If I can crack this open, Luzon is as good as mine. Intel Monkey is feeding me info about some troops loaded on a tanker bound for Bataan. Seems far-fetched as they would probably die on the beach.

Sorry, I've been slacking. Doing an AAR seems like more a full time job than playing the game.

I'll get an update with the next turn.

52 engineers destroyed and 60 combat squads disabled... ouch, and you only lost 9 tanks. His full AV was only 180 to begin the battle. Manila should be yours. Hopefully there is a nice stockpile of supply there.

No worries - I empathize with you on the time that AARs take to write - mine is languishing as well.

I enjoy reading your updates when you have them, however.

Thanks, PB. I'm glad someone is looking. It makes it worthwhile.

13 February 1942

With my other game going at full bore, I was worried about losing interest in this one. Looking it over, I don't think that will be the case. Too many interesting things going on in this one.

Landings
<None>

Losses
Hami
Pingsiang
Sabang

Haiphong falls, though some troops are still there. I'll finish them off. Between there and Hanoi, that's over 200 resource centers, which can only help. I'll heal a while before deciding whether to take the rest of the country or not. Threatening Thailand from the east can only be helpful, after what he's doing to me.

Enemy troops have arrived in Perth. I have 4 DD which I've been sending on bombardment missions there, but they've had no effect so far. I'm effectively surrounded at this point with him having taken Cunderdin. More of his forces are moving south towards Albany. I was thinking of trying to run, but I'll fight this out, having a brigade of infantry with attached armor.

It looks like all my further Australian reinforcements will come through Aden. I looked at Cape Town, and nothing will arrive there. That mean's I can take any xAPs destined for there and re-route them to the north. I've been taking them to Karachi, where they can take the train to Diamond Harbor and I have the ships there to get them to Australia. It's a long, circuitous route, as I have to watch for enemy carriers in the Indian ocean.

In the Burma area, my forces are making good time to Tavoy. Hell, maybe I can even threaten Singapore eventually. That would make the RN real relevant again. I had 5 squadrons of Hurricanes plus a bunch of Blenheims at Karachi, so they're making their way east to the front.

My Luzon convoy is rounding Midway, heading west. If KB sticks near Brisbane, they won't be a factor. My troops at Manila are sitting tight for now. He is bombing me from the northern bases with light stuff.

Nothing happening near Palambang yet.

Not a whole lot otherwise. Lots of convoys in transit. I'm estimating the Manila force reaching in 14 days. Probably a bit longer for the Aussies to Melbourne. He has troops about 2/3 the way between Brisbane and Newcastle. Can't tell if they're moving or not. My heavies have been bombing them.

Resolution and Ramillies arrive At Cape Town, which add more needed firepower to the RN. One more's already enroute (Revenge?), so I'll have a bunch on hand for bombardments.

Actually, lots of stuff arrived this turn.

6 APDs in Panama.

A bunch of RAF squadrons at Aden.

Reinforcements rounding Midway, unseen. Looking back, I wish I had made these an amphib group instead of transport, as unloading will be more of a challenge.

With luck, I'll have this base before my convoys arrive. That'll make dealing with regular transport missions easier than trying to unload all that stuff at Bataan.

Other than that, keeping my planes in Australia busy. A big convoy from the States will arrive in Sydney within a few days, bringing in a bunch of reinforcements. Aussies from India are slowly making their way there.

My troops are nearing Tavoy. Recon's showing a lot of troops there. It looks like cruisers are hanging there also, and I'm wondering why my planes at Rangoon aren't hitting them.

Reinforcements are passing Wake, about 8-10 hexes to the north. One of the transport TFs has a lowly 1/1 detection rating. Clear on everyone else. Hopefully this will be uneventful.

That 1/1 detection level is most likely a submarine, and at that level, he would not have any reliable information on the TF... probably only lists 1 ship.

Notice that your Manila attack is getting a minus for supply, which is probably starting to run short if you did not pick up much at Clark.

Do you have any P-40s in transfer range of Manila to cover the TF when it starts to unload? You can move directly from Bataan to Clark Field, without entering Manila Harbor, and unload at Clark if need be. Try to stay at least 5 hexes from the Marianas, 11 if possible. A unit of Petes starts the game in the Marianas and cannot transfer out unless moved by ship. They have an extended range of 4 hexes. Jakes have a range or 10 hexes at extended. I doubt that he has Jakes there, but the Petes are probably still there.

There was pretty much nothing at Clark.

I have no planes within range. I pulled everyone out fairly quickly, thinking everything would fall right away. I do have some quality planes in these convoys.

Jakes and Petes won't hurt me as I have two carriers escorting these groups. He has been very aggressive with his floatplanes, using them for antiship roles.

I will be cheering for you. I have mentioned several times in AARs that it is likely that the allies could resupply the Philippines from Pearl Harbor against a Japanese player who bypassed the Philippines to focus exclusively west or south. I was laughed at and scoffed at every time that I made the suggestion.

I have played the Japanese many times, and I know that unless I anticipated a supply convoy from Pearl and was on guard, I would not have detected that convoy until it was off the coast of Luzon. Japan just does not have that many patrol aircraft in early 1942, and there is large area to cover: from the coast of Burma to the southern DEI to CentPac and SoPac to the Kuriles. Later in the game, Nells and Betties are key search assets, but in the first months, they are useless for naval search. The Nell and Betty pilots start with 20 naval search. To make matters worse, two of the 5 Mavis squadrons are restricted, permanently, to the Home Islands, and a third squadron only has 3 aircraft.

Well, he's finally done it and is invading Palembang. This probably won't last long.

Likewise, I didn't notice the troops enroute to Clark, which makes things tougher on me. I need to wrap up Manila before he makes taking it impossible.

My inbound convoys are unspotted again. He's probably getting hints from the SBD sighting subs or something along the way, if they're real, that is.

More troops are showing at Palembang, so he'll be starting a new offensive before too long.

Aurorus has been spot on about Japanese long range searches. My convoy is about 12 hexes W of Iwo Jima. Nobody's been spotted. He has no clue I'm even in the area. Maybe after the Philippines, I'll sweep the carriers towards Japan to mess with his shipping. I'd love to hit some factories, but in my history, carrier aviation doesn't seem to hurt that too much.

Wake Island was paid a visit by my battleships. Like my convoy, I don't think he had a clue this was coming.

My convoys passing Iwo Jima couldn't help themselves and hit some shipping there. I did serious damage to whatever he was hauling there. I had a conundrum about what to do with my naval air. My first thought was to keep everyone grounded, but I don't want to be surprised. Just having search planes up can give them away too, so I want to be prepared. Fortunately, only the carriers are detected. Nobody sees any of the transports yet. I'm worried that next turn, search planes will be out in force. I'm hoping he thinks this is just a raid and my carriers will depart. We'll see...

My subs take a couple of shots at convoys around Japan, but as expected, fail.

My convoy is clearing Iwo Jima. The carriers are sighted, but strangely, none of the transports or oilers are. Everyone should be fairly safe. KB announced their presence about 9 hexes SE of Sydney, attacking all the transports I pulled out of there to Melbourne, sinking many. It doesn't like they'll come north, so when my transports leave the Philippines, I may divert my carriers to wreck some of his shipping on the way back.

Lots of ground fights.

Tavoy's looking like too big a nut to crack, so I'm pulling everyone back to Moulmein. Once I recover the troops a bit, I may just do a medium sized push into Thailand -- maybe threaten Bangkok from the north.

Manila's pretty ugly. I don't think I'll liberate it before my ships arrive. I'll feed troops in from Bataan when they get there. Slower than I wanted.

Forgot to add. Palambang fell the previous turn.

Wow. Real interesting AAR. Good luck with the PI resupply mission. Apparently the KB is unified in this game, unlike the other one you are playing.

Cheers,
CC

It will be interesting if your modified Plan orange works; the part that was to resupply PI and not a major fleet engagement. If successful it will make future Japanese players expend a little more air search to mid PAC looking for the ghost resupply convoy to PI.

Yeah, in the other game, I might have been able to bite off pieces of KB, the way he spread them around.

Japanese search is definitely not all-encompassing. With KB tied up elsewhere, I can do plenty up north. Too bad this wasn't a good 19 knot convoy, as they would punch through quickly. As it is, he has no clue I'm about to beef up Luzon.

Timing is everything if the allies want to try to resupply to Luzon. The Japanese have limited search assets and a large area to cover in the first months of the war. The problem for Japan is that the Nells and Betties begin with pilots who have very poor naval search. These units are essential search assets later, but not until some time has been devoted to training the pilots. Also, control of Wake Island is key. If the Japanese player wishes to by-pass Luzon, he must take Wake early to prevent an enormous hole in his air search.

Pretty much what's made this possible is his turning the Philippines into a sideshow. Against any other opponent, for this to work, you'd have to be shipping stuff out of Pearl almost on day one. Provided KB doesn't linger in the way somewhere, you would probably get away with it.

25 February 1942

The convoy has cleared Iwo and is 3.5 days away from Bataan. Nobody is sighted now. I guess what he doesn't know won't hurt him. Dave has no clue what's coming. I'm sticking to just bombarding at Manila, as that seems to be working.

KB is busy wiping out shipping trying to escape to Melbourne. Judging by the plane count, I'm nearly 100% certain the whole group is there. After landing my troops, I can afford to get creative with my two carriers.

I succeed at Ichang, though I still take heavy losses. Nice to see China isn't totally collapsing, like it usually does for me.

Ground combat at Ichang (83,48)

Attacking force 119145 troops, 784 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 3494

Two troop convoys are still enroute to Melbourne. With KB about, I may have to divert them at the last moment, so we'll see. A bunch more Australian troops are unloading at Karachi, heading to Diamond Harbor, where they'll be shipped over.

My troop should clear Tavoy by next turn. He has 3 battleships, (Ise, Hyuga, Kongo) bombarding my troops there, but I only suffered 6 casualties. Once gathered up at Moulmein, I'll push east into Thailand. With him so focused on Australia, he's neglecting other parts of the map.

Once I gather enough troop transports at Pearl, I'll be making my move into the Gilberts. From there I can pick a spot in the Solomons or Santa Cruz islands to start an offensive. At that point, I'll look at grabbing several islands simultaneously, so I can have overlapping air cover. One island will not hold off a KB sized carrier force.

What is happening on Java? Do you still have Batavia? Can you get at least a good number of medium bombers there to strat bomb Palembang? What about B-17s? What about the rest of the oil locations? Running BBs and CVs around Australia for months is going to eat through his fuel stockpiles very quickly. Not advisable to engage in SoPac campaign without all the DEI oil producing for Japan.

What is happening in Burma?

Batavia is still holding out. He took heavy losses the previous turn and is just bombarding this turn.

No way I can get any planes there. Anything out of Australia is a no-go, and I need what I have in Burma.

Even though he took Palembang and has Balikpapan, a big down side to those bases are the max port size. He won't be able to ship more than about 50k in fuel per convoy -- ever.

In Burma, my forces are withdrawing from Tavoy back to Moulmein. From there, I plan to move East into Thailand. I can keep enough behind to defend what I have. I'm about to sortie my RN carriers from Colombo to see if I can hunt down those three old battleships he's had in the area.

Why is this a problem?
