The super important planes to r&d is the:
Frank and Sam.  Shoot for 6-10 size 30 factories on each. Then you need to build George or Jack or both. Frank, George and Jack have upgrade paths so be careful about that.
You want to build well over 3000 Franks by mid 44...they will be used to wear down Lightnings and Jugs and Corsairs. Throw in 1000 to 2000 Georges or Jacks and you will be okay to mid 44.
That also means you need to r&d the Ha45 engine and also the Ha43 for the Sam.
You can r&d one late fighter like the Shinden if you want.
other planes you want are the Judy, Jill, Randy 102a, Grace, Irving -s, Nick D. you can look at Oscar, Tony etc...but Frank and Sam. Perhaps a kamikaze?

The Ki-100 (late war Tony) is a nice one for the early R&D acceleration. Keep advancing through the lesser Ki-61A-Ki-61D models and start researching the Ki-100. Once the Ki-61A research factories have all healed (mid-late 1942), research can be started on the subsequently converted Ki-100 factories the next day. You won't have all your Frank research factories pulling for you until a year or so later.
The Tojo-IIc is a must have in later 1942-mid-1943. Oscar IIa and IIb are worthwhile upgrades over the Ic as fighting platforms. With significant range and a 2x250kg bomb payload, they can also be potent (and fast) kamikazes later in the war. Judy is a worthy upgrade from the Val (don't build the D3A3, it's a waste) and the later Judys are a nasty surprise with an 800 kg payload. Jills are fast with excellent range, a worthy TB upgrade. The Grace is a dream and can be run as a DB or TB.
Of course, almost all of these opinions and advice presuppose that this game will see 1943, let alone 1944.
