The Oscar squadron in China has swept the same hex 3 days in a row.. challenging AVG to a fight there. AVG responds, and the two crack squadrons exchange a few losses in an evenly fought battle.

Feb. 1st, and the Moresby landing is a go, despite bad weather and poor bombing conditions the prior day. It is nice to wait for good weather and aviation support for these types of operations, but lingering often causes more problems that a lack of air support on the ground. So onto the beaches of Moresby. The covering TF fights a series of battles with the PT boats, sinking a few, and prevents them from attacking the amphibious group. On the other hand, the presence of the PTs prevents the covering TF from bombarding. So the invasion goes in with little support from sea or air. It comes off as well as can be expected. There are no naval guns or mines present. The question is: will 2 regiments with limited HQ support be enough at Moresby? The allies have reinforced the position with an Australian brigade. One of the hazards of not conducting any recon until the day before the attack.

A look under the hood of the Japanese economy in this game. Managing the Japanese economy has 2 essential components: efficiently allocating supplies and balancing fuel consumption so that fleet movements do not use all the fuel necessary for the Japanese heavy industry.

I do not worry much about how much fuel my fleet uses during the period of the amphibious bonus. I do try to limit how much I use the BBs, other than the fast BBS, however. I try to go through the whole of 1942 only having to refuel the non-Kongo class BBs once. The cardinal rule on BBs for Japan is not to use a BB for anything that a CA can do.

The area that confounds many who want to play Japan is how to use supply efficiently. Expanding anything in the economy requires supply, and lots of it. Increasing vehicle production, engine production, air-frame production, and air R&D all uses supply. Converting merchant shipyards to naval shipyards uses supply. 1000 supply for each point of anything converted or added to the Japanese economy. I like to move much of the starting supply off the Home Islands into forward areas very quickly, so my changes to the Japanese economy occur gradually, because supply is not available to make every change that I want in the first few turns.

As PaxMondo has observed, the easiest way to think of supply for Japan is to think of it as a fixed amount. Japan will receive X amount of supply for the entire war. Whether Japan uses this supply as quickly as it generates it or hoards it for the end-game is the decision that every Japanese player must make. If I use all of my 1942 and early 1943 supply for air operations, ground operations, and engine and plane production in 1942 and early 1943, Japan will collapse quickly as the allied war effort gains steam from mid 1943 onward. I want to stay on the offensive for as long as possible, however, so I do not want to be miserly in 1942. There is no "correct" way to manage Japan's economy, but using supply efficiently is very important.

The most important question early on is engine and airframe production: especially the Nakajima 35 engine. This is THE engine of the Japanese war machine in 1942; the Oscar, Zero, Lilly, Thalia, Nick, and Kate all use this engine. It does not remain THE engine of the Japanese war machine for the entire war, however. As the war progresses, the Mitsubishi 33 and several other engines become more important. Eventually the Nakajima 35 is replaced by the Nakajima 45 in most air force fighters.

So one of the first decisions that a Japanese player must make is how many Nakajima 35s, Zeros, and Oscars do I want to produce. Hundreds of Nakahima 35s must be made each month, but producing too many will result in waste of thousands, or hundreds of thousands of supply. Producing too few will result in Japan losing the initiative prematurely and thus losing the game.

Here is my Nakajima 35 production at the moment. I want to reach 500 engines in the pool to receive a bonus on my R&D, as quickly as possible after the R&D factories for the Zero and Oscar are repaired; however, I do not want to overproduce the Nakajima 35. I have set the production at 290 per month for the moment. I can always add more later, but I can never subtract. Once the supply is allocated and the factories increased, the supply is gone forever, so a go-slow approach is often a good idea.

80 per month should be enough Zeros, and I hope to turn off Zero and Oscar production for a couple months; otherwise, I will not reach 500 Nakajimas 35s in the pool for a long time. I have been cautious in my use of the Lilly. It does not hold up well against flak. As a result, I have a sufficient pool of Lillies, and Lilly production has been shut off for the past month. Thalia production is just above the minimum needed to replace operational losses. Kate production is at the minimum necessary to maintain Japan's naval air force. It can be increased later, if necessary. Eventually, however, the Kate will be replaced with the Jill, so expansion of Kate production to late-war levels is to be avoided.

Here is an image of the Japanese top pilots to this point in the war. This will give you some idea of how I have use Japan's air forces in the early months. I like the Zero. In the first month, the air force fighters handle mostly "milk runs," escorting bombers over bases that have already been cleared of allied fighters by Zeros. The Oscar 1a and 1bs are poor air superiority fighters, even at this stage in the war. With slightly better armament the Oscar 1c is better and a fine plane for this stage of the war, and the squadrons that have been upgraded from Nates to the Oscar 1c are taking a larger and larger role in the war. However, the Zero gets kills, so that you do not have to face the same plane (and often the same pilot) twice. The Oscar does not get many kills, even at this stage of the war. Fighting for air superiority with Oscar is tricky. It often takes a combined effort of Oscars, followed by airfield raids, to achieve lasting air superiority with Oscar.

As you can see, all my top pilots are Zero pilots. I have relied heavily on the Zero. (A careful eye will notice that one of my top pilots is flying a Pete from a CS. He is in a Pete training program similar to that of the Topsy training program used by the army.) The fatigue levels in this image are little high for my liking. I try not to fly pilots with over 20 fatigue, but these naval aviators have been a busy group for the past 2 months.

I set the SCTF to "patrol" the Moresby hex for a turn and must have made a mistake and cleared the patrol zone, because they started to "return to port." As a result the PT boats slipped in and found my minesweepers. This time, there was no heroics from the DMS, and this round went to the PT boats.

Daylight over Java and recon shows a heavy concentration of fighters at Soerabaja. I set up 2 sweeps: one from Bandjemasin, nearby, and one from further away in Makasar. 42 Oscars came in from Banjemasin and 27 Zeros from Makasar. Ideally, I wanted the Oscars to arrive first, parry the bulk of the CAP, for the Zeros to come in second and score some kills against a depleted CAP. It worked the opposite. The Zeros came in first and though outnumbered, were able to fight even with the CAP and get away without many losses. Then the Oscars came in against a depleted CAP and scored some kills, as if to prove me wrong about Oscar not scoring many kills.

B-17s come in over Moresby and tangle with LRCAP from the CV covering group. These are not the lightly gunned Ds, but the real McCoy B-17s: the Es. Tough matchup for the Zero. B-17Es are a job for Nicks.

Sasai, J. in a A6M2 Zero makes head on attack ... forces B-17E Fortress out of formation.

Notice the last line about Sasai, J. That is a product of pilot experience. He is an experience 84 pilot (who now has 3 kills... one of which is a B-17). The level of historical detail in the game is incredible. In fact, Junichi Sasai was one of the first Japanese aces of the war. He was also one of the pilots who innovated the "head-on" attack on B-17s to knock them out of formation. He begins the game in one of the squadrons at Takao. I moved him to the CVs after the Manila campaign, and he now flies off the Akagi.

Sasai was his commanding officer... a samurai by legacy. He was a "peasants' warrior," however, who discarded the prestige of the samurai by all accounts and was a friend to his squadron. Does Sakai mention the incident over New Guinea when he and his wingmates performed a series of aerial acrobatics over the U.S. airfield? Sasai received a letter the next day from the U.S. commander, in English, congratulating them for such a fine display. Sasai was not happy with Sakai and the others.

Thank you very much. I will watch this tonight. I was just complaining to Bob that it has been years since I read a good pilot's story from WWII, and books from the English-speaking world are so hard to come by here in Argentina.

Not the most desirable results for Japan. I really regret not having a proper ground HQ present now. The AF unit has some extra support to help get the disabled squads recovered, but an HQ would expedite this attack greatly. The risk of getting bogged down at Moresby is now substantial.

The action is slowing down a bit as the Japanese consolidate their gains and reorganize their forces before continuing the push forward. The 4th was a slow day with little of consequence.

In the early morning hours of the 5th, a Dutch sub finds a high-value target.

The land supply issue in this game s**ks (kill me Alfred)

I like how the game handles land supply. The only objection that I have is how slowly units disintegrate after reaching 0 supply. They should fall apart within a week or so, rather than hanging on for months, which they often do.

Unlike most people, I do not view the "China" problem as one of the supply available to the Chinese. In point of fact, the Chinese had little supplies and of the estimated 4 million Chinese who died in the war, the majority died for lack of medical supplies and even starvation. The "China" problem is actually a problem with the garrisons. The Japanese can handle their garrison requirements in China with puppet units almost exclusively. This was not the case at all. Large portions of the Japanese army were tied down in maintaining control of the roads and the countryside. The garrison requirements in China for Japan should be much higher. That would solve the "China problem" in my opinion and make it more accurate to the historical challenge that Japan faced in launching offensives in China.

As an aside, the other problem in China is the enormous number of disabled squads that China has. These consume supply but contribute nothing. In fact, per the manual, units with large numbers of disabled squads consume more supply than units without disabled squads. Many of these squads should be considered "destroyed" for the purposes of game engine in the at-start setup.

Indeed I've been expecting them returning to Rabaul. The minefield was laid Feb 5th., timing has been just right but supposed KB move was utterly wrong.

In Sumatra, the allies have formed a redoubt at Padang. Lillies and Anns from Palembang and Johore Batu have gone in several times to bomb unescorted. One of the units present is a British Aviation unit, so I suspected that Bob may shift a few fighters up from Java to try to catch the unescorted bombers. The ground strike for the 6th was called off, and recon showed that indeed, Bob did send a flight of fighters up. A sweep by a detachment from Commander Kato's 64th Hayabusa squadron was ordered for the 7th.

Kato was not in command. This is the detachment, which was upgraded to Oscar Ics on Dec. 7th. The action heats up in South China, where a Japanese stack is moving toward Wenchow. A large strike was ordered to support the advance on Wenchow, including 75 Sallies, 27 lillies, and 24 Sonias.

In the Phillipines, several air strikes from Sallies, Anns, and Sonias operating off Clark Field is followed up by an attack against the isolated remnants of the Luzon army east of Manila. The allied unit perform remarkably well. It appears they have reached the 0 supply threshold, but hold out valiantly.

The Japanese follow up the fighter sweep over Soerabaja with a raid on the airfield. Clear skies and the strike comes off well. Who said Ground bombing skill does not matter? All these pilots are over 75 ground bombing after flying over Luzon 5 days a week for 6 weeks. These are some crack bomber pilots.

Under current mechanics, Chinese units well inside my Japanese controlled zone can and receive supply, amply, if any "supply line" can be traced back to a supply source closely dodging and slaloming through my units.Tell me this realistic??

With regard to the garrisoning problem, in my game Chinese "puppet" units are definitely not enough and I'm forced to make ample use of regular Japanese army units to keep order and control, and the more I advance and conquer, the more acute is the problem, which is hindering me not a few.

I like that hexsides can be controlled after moving through them in disputed hexes, but hexes cannot, because it forces players to maintain a coherent line. Keep in mind that the amount of supply that a unit receives depends upon the path that the supply must take to get to the unit. So, if you control road hexes and railway hexes, for example, and force supply to flow to units through difficult terrain, supply will be lost in transit and the units will often be under-supplied.

I realize now that, in this instance, he was probably receiving supply from Wenchow, which would be producing an excess sufficient to supply those unit.

Most players believe that there is a "problem" in China, in that, with a focused effort, Japan can conquer most of China, at least as far as Chungking, whereas in the actual war, Japan did not. I don't view this as a serious problem, unlike most players. My position is that Japanese units in China were under-supplied throughout the war, and Japan did not make China a focus. Most Japanese players in this game do, and therefore they use much more supply in China than Japan actually did historically. The use of large amounts of supply in China means that fewer bases that can be expanded, less fortifications can be built, less air missions can be launched, and so forth, in other theaters. It is also, in my opinion, why many Japanese players find that supply, rather than fuel, is the crippling limitation on Japan's economy in the later game.

China is not a "critical" theater in my opinion, because as every allied player can attest, supply flows poorly through central China. Therefore, China is not the best location from which to begin an attack on the Home Islands. The allies are better served moving through the DEI and the Phillipines and SoPac and CentPac. Again, this is my opinion. There are a few instances where the allies had some limited success pressuring Japan from China, but these are exceptions and not the norm.

This is not to say that I am going to ignore China in this game or any game. It is just that I take a different view of China than most JFBs. Just because I can conquer the whole of China does not mean that I must conquer the whole of China. With a highly focused effort from day 1, I could probably conquer all of Australia as well. Does that mean I must conquer all of Australia while the allies reinforce the DEI? No, absolutely not.
