The Allies have lost over 700 planes in the first month.

That is going to hurt as they are very short on replacements for the first few months. He will be forced to pull back very soon, me thinks....

With this carrier superiority cemented into 1942 and beyond, I'd seriously consider putting plans in place for a limited CENTPAC campaign to delay the inevitable counteroffensive in 1943 and 1944.

Christmas Island (Pac), Noumea, and even Fiji should all be attainable. Granted, it may be a major operation, but you've now the superiority in carriers to mount the operation, and you'll be glad of the ~3 months grace that you'll get when the Allies need to retake them.

Word from Emperor's Imperial Shipyards at Tokyo is - them 5 Tonan Whalers are being converted to carry Sake and rice beer for brave air and seamen at the southern Dai Tōa Kyōeiken area, and sent on their way ASAP!
Printing presses are already releasing a victory edition stamps in your honor.
Rumour has it that katana-masters from Okinawa are preparing a very special Oita tempered steel gift for Lowpe-san!

Srsly though, with only 1 Us carrier active (right? Did you already bag the York?), this should unlock KB for a nice IO & AUS campaign and a free reign at raiding shipping on main transport lanes.
Sydney, Perth, Ceylon, even West India raids, and an invasion-or two become possible, no?

I will think on it. It is scenario 1, and quite frankly fuel and oil are hard to come by.

I also worry that Obvert would cede that ground to me now, and rather attack in the Aleutians and SRA instead...biding him time there. He knows darn well the KB can only be in one spot...I am sure he wants it bouncing back and forth across the Empire like a ping pong ball.

We are the scenario 1 copy of the limited shipping mod. I am not good with numbers.

First jobs, first.

There is quite a lot of Allied cruisers at risk, and I need to work on sinking them...

Confirmed, the Seagull V is on Aussie ships. So, most likely the Australia went down.

How are your land based Zero air groups holding up? Where are they? They have to carry the fighter load for some time, so their health is always important.

Almost everything is shot...high fatigue, lots of disabled planes, etc.

Today, I am playing defensively in the air (except for one Oscar sweep), but leaving lots of air strikes on the periphery. I am hoping to recover some frames, fatigue, and morale.

I figure no matter how hard my squadrons have had it, the Allies have had it even harder right now.

Turn just finished and off to Obvert.

Jan 8, 1942

In cleanup fights both sides sink a destroyer, and then at daybreak in heavy thunderstorms a sharp fight at Palembang develops.

Heavy bombing runs by the Allies, especially at Palembang and Balikpapen....

Seagulls sunk for the day looks sweet, doesn't it?

Man...He is going to miss those heavy cruisers. Sure he gets lots of Brooklyn and Cleveland class girls but heavy cruisers are hard to come by til 44. I'm still honestly amazed at just how well IJN CAs perform in game. I guess its all about the experience levels?

I believe he has lost 7-8 heavy cruisers and 1 battlecruisers and 2 fleet carriers for my 3 heavy cruisers and 1 Ryujo. Shocking losses. Destroyer losses are super heavy for both sides, and will really be felt for the rest of the game.

There will be shocking more losses tomorrow...as some further posts will show.

The weather has turned, and now engagements will be at 5k to 2k and the IJN should start hitting with torpedoes.

POW fleeing! Palembang has torpedoes, but the runway is at 63% damaged with over 150 engineers working on it.

B17s score multiple hits on the oil...total damage now rises to 71 points of oil damage. I don't care about the refinery damage.

Yeesh. I guess he was taking a gamble to really slow you down by hitting something hard that you'd left underprotected, but that didn't happen.

That's an exemplification of a realistic defense of Java and Dutch Indies, congrs to Obvert.

I just really cannot understand by any degree until now, why did he deploy the Enterprise in the narrow waters of Makassar straits and surrounding, that imagination's defying.

Can anyone inquire Obvert on this?

He thought he was reinforcing success...my airfields were closed and taking a shot at damaged battleships seemed like a golden opportunity since the KB was days away. Plus an attempt to save the Repulse factored in too. Those TB only have a four hex range, and he wanted to get some BBs...but it split his Alpha strike with the SBDs going one way the TB going the other.

His naval search wasn't great on the periphery where my reinforcements were coming from. Thanks in large part to his aggressive use of flying boats in attack roles. I think he thought I was half as strong as I was.

Plus, I think I totally surprised him in standing down most of my ships and giving him the bombardment. It meant my ships engaged his after they had spent most of their main gun ammunition. Costly move on my part as I lost a fair bit of planes...but worth it in the long run. Without the runways closed, he wouldn't have sent the CVs in.

Finally, I made pains to make all my battleship SAGs very high numbered task forces...with the result they were usually the last to engage. I also structured all my ships in fairly low density task forces..what I call multiple small unit task forces...strong advantage at night, but a handicap during the day....but it did encourage lots and lots of naval fights.

Unfortunately, the weather was clear...never have I seen such an pitiful long lance performance so the ABDA navy really performed well. If not for the lack of ammo I think the fight could have really gone the other way.

There is something to be said for timing major naval operations with the weather in your favor!

Of course the fight isn't done...but I am getting stronger and he is getting weaker. Next turn should be interesting too.
