Please could somebody help me? I'm afraid I've accidentally gone and downloaded a 300MB five year old game rather than this Steel Panthers World at War thing. What a complete twat I am. Could somebody direct me to the correct dowload screen to get this NEW free game, please? (twat - mild english expletive)

Grah, if you don't like the game you don't have to play it. Why do you feel the need to poke fun at SPWAW? A quick look on the forum shows the tremendous enthusiasm that many feel for it. Considering the great effort Matrix has put into the game you come off as rather ungrateful. SPWAW is a gift to the wargaming community: isn't it poor form to complain about the perceived quality of a gift to the giver? However, I do hope that you will take the time to delve into the game. You may be pleasantly surprised by what you find. This is a game by wargamers for wargamers.

Is this sarcasm or a real plea for help? Pardon me, I am not sure. If you do need help finding the game, we'll do what we can to help. If this is an off-hand slam, my only suggestion is the same. Try it first. Then submit your criticism. We'll listen. This is not any other version of SP. A quick play of it will confirm that. I think I would have taken a little more care to see what I was downloading before I invested that much time, if this is sarcasm. If you are unhappy with it, you know who to blame for taking the time to download it (G). Wild Bill ------------------ Wild Bill Wilder Coordinator, Scenario Design Matrix Games

Well, I don't know what this guy expects out of a new game. There are really three types of new games: The games with better gameplay, but relatively unchanged graphics, the games with better graphics but relatively unchanged gameplay, and finally the games that happen to be completely original. SPWAW never pretended to be a completely original game, but the game play is vastly improved over the previous SP games, though the graphics engine is the same as the other 3 games. Most of the games that everyone thinks are so great are the Doom and Command and Conquer clones. Gameplay is identical in each case to the original, but the grapnics are very good. Then of course there are the completely original games. The sims is a good example. Totally new ideas and hence a totally new game. Anyways, graphics mean nothing to gameplay and vice versa. So the real question is, what would you rather have, a new gameplay experience or something pretty to look at? Why don't you go to a quake or unreal forum and ask them why the game is exactly the same as Doom? Or how bout going to starcraft and asking them how the game is so vastly different from command and conquer? It comes down to preferences in the end. I like new challanges and being forced to develop new techniques and tactics, while others like something pretty to look at while using the same techniques they used for years.

I agree with Desert Fox, new challenges are what makes this game and community so great. So my questions to you are: 1: You must have recognized the SP name as a 5 year old product, what did you think sp2 and 3 were? Thay were inprovements on a system that worked. The guys from Matrix and Wild Bills Raiders jsut took it to a new level, at the cost of their time and energy with out charging you a dime. 2: Did you read the main page at Matrix or Thegamers.net? Says its a totally redone version of SP. As with any new game, things need to be tweeked, but the game is fantastic plus it runs in windows. I have not played in 6 months because my old dos based sp games would not run on my new system. 3: Think about the guys at SSI. If they could see how many downloads are going for this game, the're probably whishing they slapped a 39.99 sticker on it and sent it out to the stores. The guys at Matrix worked hard to get permision to remake the game and none are getting compensation save the gratitude of fellow gamers. i for one say we should take up a collection for them 3rd Recon

Grah's comments remind me of the criticism some have for Koei's RTK series.(it's up to seven in the orient six here) If you are not a fan of this genre go elsewhere. Personally I feel this game is a marked improvement over SP1. Hats off to the Spwaw team, and if you feel the need to criticize it build something better. regards, sven p.s. Wild Bill what ever happened to John Waters? [This message has been edited by sven (edited 05-11-2000).]
