I have been registered for a while and have really just gotten down to playing SP WAW intensely (I am in the second battle of Lost Victories). What a wonderful and addictive game (my horrible tactics aside). I just wanted to say Hi and thanks for all the great information on this forum, you guys and gals seem to have alot of fun, I look forward to continuing to frequent here. :)

Hi Tbone!

Welcome out of the Shadows, :p you'll have a great time getting involved in our sane and our not-so-sane debates around here.

And as always; you're invited to post a challenge to anyone in the Opponents Wanted forum.... ;) nothing beats playing another SP:WAW addict, and taunting/cringing while doing it.

Thanks for the welcome! I will be trying out PBEM someday. Hwever, getting an understanding of the game system is still progressing. Not being to hard on myself but it would literally be hilarious how bad I would get beaten playing even a remotely competent human opponent. Currently the hardest item for me to grasp is using mortars. Either the unit says unavailable or by the time it is ready to fire I have men to close to the target and I am assuming they take friendly fire as a 10 man squad shows up as 8 afterwards without taking enemy fire that I could disern. The current US Army has nothing on me as far as FF is concerned. :( . I see the debate regarding M4 Tanks and German panther and tiger tanks and I think, thankfully, I cannot comment as I am in the dark as to eithers effectiveness. Combat Leader looks like a winner also, I can't wait for it's release also. Thanks
again for the welcome!!

Take lightly on our M4-Kat bashing, Tbone. We're doing it just for kicks, we can all pretty much agree that every tank has its strength and weakness. (An M4 would be toast vs. a Kat but that's like apples and oranges :p )

Regarding the mortars; are you using Forward Observers to call arty in? Mortars are usually the fastest to respond to a call, so I'm confused why you're having troubles with them. FO's call in mortars usually with 0.4 delay if they're not US ones. Yes, they do get out of contact every now and then, that's life when you have to rely on radios and not a collective Hive Mind. ;)

It's great to see new people jump in and join the fun! :)

This place is, indeed, the friendliest most helpful forum I personally know of....and aside from just a couple lunatics here and there, filled with some top notch people. :D

As for the M4 vs Kat thing....:D :D :D Bernie put it best..."friends don't let friends drive M4's". LMAO

That could be my problem the FO. I will have to print out the manual as switching back and forth is bothersome, so I usually learn on the fly. In LV battle one, I would usually click on a target hex (usually a bunker) then hit the bombard button and the list would come up with all the motars listed. Some units would not have HE button active and some dialogue box comes up when clicked but it closed to fast to see what it says. I would, if the HE button was activated, assign one or more mortar units to bombard. I would then get a 1.4 listing as time to impact. After my turn I would watch the enemy AI, then have my next turn again moving my units closer (which i see now is dumb) to the target and after the next enemy turn there would be a bunch of impacts ( I am assuming this is my mortar rounds though it is to fast to tell what exactly is impacting) and then my turn again. When I hit the bombard button again the impact markers are still displayed on the map however the units no longer show a time to impact number. So I guess I was assuming any unit close by could be used as a FO? I did not specifically use a dedicated FO unit for this, like it seems i should have. Sorry for the novel of a response.

As far as the Apples to Oranges, I guess Oranges are a better tank than Apples? And Apples being an M4 ? :D

It is a great forum for fun and learning and I am here a whole lot now when I should be working, guess I am getting addicted, somewhat.

It's very important to check out the delay before you move. ;)

Tbone: Welcome to the forum, glad your out of the closet (so to speak). Your now well on your way to becoming an addict. After reading your last post, just for stuff and giggles, do you have fast artillery ON in prefrences ???? If so it sounds (no sound) just like you described motar fire. Also second the reccomendation of Belisarius, very good info.
:) :) :)

Welcome TBone!

A word of advice on MCLV: Backup early and often. You never know when you will have an unexpected crash. You'd hate to have to start from the beginning after fighting your way through a bunch of battles.

Brought to you by someone who had to learn that the hard way.:)

Thanks guys. I have not adjusted any settings on preferences yet. From searching the forums, that does indeed seem to be what is happening, fast Artillery must be on. (mental note: Must read instruction manual). As far as the crashing goes thankfully everything has been working good so far, but i will definitely take your advice and save often. After taking Belisarius's advice and reading the thread on Artillery, all I can say is  , I have alot to learn. There seem to be so many good games coming out, it really becomes an addicting hobby when you start counting the days til the next game is released. How does everyone find time to play games like SPWAW, and say Uncommon Valor, I have both just not enough time to play both in depth at the same time along with Korsun Pocket coming up and Combat Leader, Squad Assault and now Airborne Assualt... Like the article from a link in another thread said, you would need 26 hours a day easily to get the most out of all these games.

Welcome Tbone!

Remember to 'Shift' your fire instead of replotting it somewhere, when you can.

Don't get mind-controlled by Jesster like Hawk did....

LOL!!

I will admit I am itching to use some Panthers and Tigers in a battle moreso than an M4. Guess it is from reading alot of history and the almost mythological quality given to these tanks. I look forward to seeing if they (when my tactics warrant it) are as good as they are made out to be. I would guess in a gun to armour matchup most tigers or panthers would be more than a match and then some for an M4. That does not include Crew Experience, Tactics employed, or support units (planes and infantry) contributions. All of you probably are in a better situation to know than I am so I will just follow along with the debate, and have fun.

Thanks for the tip about shifting fire, I recently read about overshooting a target then adjusting down a couple of hexes to simulate a delay in firing. Will have to try this out.

I have to tell you guys (Hawk & Jess) that I'm getting awefully tired of seeing my superior tactics wasted by the marshmellows my M4s are bouncing off the hulls of Jim1954's PzIVhs! I'm getting better results from my regular US Infantry close assaults!

At least SPWAW accurately models the 4:1 ratio an M4 needs to kill a Kat. Without the 3" gun on those things, they are really frustrating.

Hawk, you are confusing liking something with using it to be brave and for a challenge. See, you like Kats, but use the M4 for the challenge. We all know it, even Jess. Remember the poll?

Yeah... Guts in the trees, guts in the bushes, guts everywhere! ;)

Ya know, this whole "Kats are good but it takes balls to drive an M4" debate reminds me of one of my favorite sound bites... I'd upload it, but the forums don't do wavs so here's what it says:

"Gonads are useful for their purposes, but they are no substitute for brains." :D

BTW, TBone, welcome to the forums. As for your diappearing text boxes, you can set the delay on how long they get displayed in the preferences section of the game. Another tip, for faster play and less chance of a lock-up, is to load directly from the mech.exe file instead of the menu. It bypasses the opening video (which causes problems for some users).

It's true, you are. Why, you even have a pair of sandals made out of old M4 track sections instead of old tires! Of course, they are a bit of a hazard at the beach, but when you wear that Kermit the Frog inflatable ring you look just like a DD. :)

LOL. :D

I don't know what they are like in SP yet (only played Lost victories and a download from the raiders website so far), but in Combat Mission Beyond Overlord, (again my tactics aside) I was slaughtered trying to advance against German armour, against the AI. Not saying that validates anything because my tactics are what probably did my guys and tanks in. Couldn't seem to even get in firing range most of the time before i was hit. It will be fun once I have a better tactical edge to use inferior equipment and still win.

Hello Bernie, thanks for the heads up on the text boxes. I finally printed out all 250+ pages of that monster manual  clicking on an item 15 times trying to see what flashes on the screen was to funny ( I figured I had to fast a computer or something and needed a moslo program to moderate speed, go figure ha). I was reading your post about your SPCon and looking at the pics, seems like a good time was had, I would be interested in visiting those sites someday also, (the "wife to be" though is totally not understanding to why I am all of a sudden glued to the computer (playing SP), let along going to look at some "old tanks and guns" ) her words. Oh well, I will have to wait for pictures again, that is nice that you guys do that and upload pics for everyone to check out.
