Holy massive blurry picture. You may want to scale this down abit.

Can't see aft but possibly USS America?

Definitely an American amphibious assault ship.

If I got any closer my boat would be shot out from under me.

Clearly resembles this. http://www.cmano-db.com/ship/2354/ :)

I'm going for LHA 6 as well but I'm unsure about the stern. Will be interested to see what the actual answer is.

A Wasp-class amphibious assault ship maybe?

USS Tripoli (LHA-7) was just launched and it's probably well south of this position undergoing sea trial in the Gulf. But I could be wrong. A smaller pic is no better re: resolution. But it scales better on my cell phone.

That's what I thought at first but the hazy hills in the background are NOT Pascagoula, and that ship looks finished, not just launched (admittedly hard to tell from the picture). Back to the drawing board, so to speak.

Pic NOT from a Russian sub .. something more like a Boston Whaler. Although the recon sensors might be in the same league

Does this mean that the ship is on the East Coast? If that is the case my earlier guess is on the other coast.

My final guess is USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7). I'm probably completely wrong.

Yes ... East Coast. Picture taken May 17 mid afternoon. I will check in the morning and see if she remains docked at that waterfront location.

My guess would have been USS America (LHA-6) or more likely, since she just launched, USS Tripoli (LHA-7) but the hills in the background make the latter dubious as Tripoli is in Mississippi. USS Iwo Jima is currently in Mayport. She is definitely an LHD/LHA.

Well I am not exactly sure. Pretty sure it is the USS Kearsarge. http://www.uscarriers.net/lhd3history.htm
has her in Norfolk on the 19th so that does makes me wonder. The pic was taken of the Earle weapons station pier.
The Kearsarge frequents the depot which supplies ships out of Norfolk. I always see
ammo ships there. It has all the look of an LHD. This time I was lucky.
