As soon as the Help popup appears on the main menu, or maybe a second or two after, the game crashes.

I've gone through the Support FAQ and tried everything. Nothing changes it.

I'm on Windows 7

Here is the crashlog.

10:39:56 PM Initialize: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
at DWSteamAPI.GetAppID()

Open the game installation folder and find a subfolder named "redist" and open it. Inside you should find a file named DXSETPUP.exe, please run it and install DirectX9.

if that doesn't work

Could you please attach a DxDiag report file to your message / reply?

Please attach a DxDiag report fie.
How to get a DxDiag report file:

1. Click on "START" (on Windows 8/10 press “Windows key” and the “R” key at the same time)
2. Click "run" (skip this step on Windows 8/10)
3. Type in "dxdiag" and click "OK"
4. Check through the tabs and perform all tests
5. Click "Save all Information..." and save the text file to a location of your choice
6. Attach the file to your message
7, if your new and can't / don't have permission etc, then copy paste into a reply or pm me with the details, or host file else where so it can be viewed

Direct X didn't change anything...maybe gave me a second or two before it crashed again.

Uploaded the dxdiag file.

Reset the game to default options by finding the file defaultOptions and removing it or renaming it.
Distant World will recreate the file with default options and get you back into the game.
In windows 10 the file is in C:\Users\yourusername\Documents\My Games\Distant Worlds Universe
Not sure where it would be with Windows 7... it should be in the same folder as the crashlog file DW_CrashDump.txt

When I get this error it usually happens if I have made a mistake in the mod I am developing such as having 107 playable races but only 100 image files for those races.

I remove the file defaultOptions which gets me back into Distant Worlds no mods loaded, fix the problem in my mod that caused the error and then load the mod.

If you have recently purchased the game and been unable to start it, you could also verify the files if you purchased the game in Steam. Check that no games files were corrupted by following this link.

I'm not using any mods, this is a fresh install. I've tried the steam version and the non-steam version. Same crash.

I deleted defaultOptions, no change. I thought maybe this had to do with Internet Explorer, so I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the newest version, but no, same crash, same error report.

Is there a way to stop that initial Galactopedia help box from opening first thing on the main menu? I know there is a checkbox, but I can't click it before the game crashes. Maybe there is a .ini file somewhere that does the same thing?

sound drivers are very old Date and Size: 10/30/2012

Realtek High Definition Audio drivers latest version are here

http://www.realtek.com.tw/Downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=24&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3

no game related errors in the logs included, so anything else would be guesswork from me.

quote:

add the exe of the game to your Anti Virus and firewall program, to make sure check the logs of these to see if it was one if any of them was to blame.

That usually means a 3rd party program, like an Internet security programs, is or could be interfering with the game or update installation.

run the game from a admin account and use full admin permissions.

please make sure all game pre requisite are installed with the game, even if you think or fully know there are already installed, it will only over write, and it may be that you have a older or newer version of these where as the game in question may need a certain version.

please make sure you are running the latest game version and have up to date drivers installed on your pc,

use a clean profile on startup so have in other words less applications and programs auto running in the background when you run the game

If you have the original version. So you'll need to update it from the Internet.
Please note that you'll only need the last update, as the updates are comprehensive. (not needed with steam)

^^ link has all the latest info on game errors above ^^

media player has to be set as default for game to work with movies

I installed the Realtek Driver, but nothing changed. Same crash on menu as soon as it loads.

I've done nearly everything mentioned in that FAQ link...

One thing I noticed is that dotnetfx35.exe doesn't seem to work or do anything. All the other stuff included in the redist folder installs, except that one.

I've tried running it as admin. Nothing happens except the box asking me if I'm sure about running the program. I click yes. Then nothing.

I'm going to try uninstalling all the net frameworks then reinstall them

Okay, dotnetfx35.exe actually starts now and will try to install. Unfortunately, Setup.exe stops working near the end. I can't get through without it crashing. : /

without any errors on your report it's hard to say what it could be, seems you have something on your end that's stopping it, have you checked the anti virus logs for any info to see if it's that?

as some are rubbish and stop games from working or running.

7. Please run XNA Framework 4.0. This can be found in:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Distant Worlds Universe\redist\xnafx40_redist.msi
(Steps 8-11 are also described in this guide: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/03/07/8108332.aspx).

8. Go to the Control Panel then Programs and Features and attempt to repair .NET Framework 4.0.

9. If a repair does not help, then try to download and run the .NET Framework Repair Tool to see if it can find and fix any issues with the .NET Framework on your computer. You can download the tool from the below link:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30135

10. If the repair tool does not help, then go to the Add/Remove Programs control panel and attempt to uninstall .NET Framework 4.0. Then reinstall .NET Framework 4.0 from the link below:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=17718

11. If uninstall still fails from Add/Remove Programs, download the .NET Framework cleanup tool and choose to remove .NET Framework 4.0. Then reinstall again .NET Framework 4.0 (using the file downloaded in the previous step). The cleanup tool can be found at the below link:
http://blogs.msdn.com/cfs-file.ashx/__key/CommunityServer-Components-PostAttachments/00-08-90-44-93/dotnetfx_5F00_cleanup_5F00_tool.zip

12. Please run msconfig and disable all background programs and then run the game. If the issue is resolved, then you can re-enable each program until you find the interfering program. You can see a tutorial of how to use msconfig below:
https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/shutting-down-background-applications

so you have tried all this and still it doesn't work?

even with adding the game exe to your anti virus safe list etc?

Man, I've tried everything several times over. Been googling error codes and all that, but nothing seems to work. Net Framework 3.5 doesn't seem to be installing or being recognized. I can't figure out why...

Oh, and the game won't start through the launcher anymore as well. I mean, not a big problem, I can still launch it through the .exe...but hey, maybe it's a usable clue to what is going on?

as long as it works then, seems you have found your own solution then, but yes again no idea why it's not working as it should either, something on your side it doesn't like and maybe conflicting with it, but to say what again would be guess work i'm sorry to say

No, its not fixed. I was just meaning for when I need to launch to game to see if it crashes. It still crashes as the help window pops up on the main menu. Maaaybe I get like...3-4 seconds...I can sometimes close the help window and see the main menu...but just for a second before it crashes.

only option now is to try staff support and see if they have any idea's, but tbh they will or may only say what already been suggested above tbh

good luck

Just open a tech support ticket or contact http://www.matrixgames.com/support/ with your order details (order reference number or/and email address used when placed the order) and they will provide you more game related support
