Hi,

recently I had run over this little desktop game, and enjoyed it a lot in a single player. Actually I played about 8 different subs, got killed 3 times (mines, circular run, depth charge), but enjoyed it immensely.

I would like to offer to GM a session with one of you - and write back what is happening in form of narrative.

Anyone interested to command a sub in Pacific ?
J.

An intriguing prospect, Barb. Thanks for the offer. But it's all I can do to squeeze out a turn or two of WiTP:AE these days.

I will be interested to read the narrative as it is posted though.

What was the name of board game? Silent Service? Submarine?? Think it was Submarine. That game was FUN! Spent many an hour playing it against several fiendish opponents during my High School days.

Nobody interested? You don't have to know a lot about that particular board game or rules, I will run all the options through with you...

So, I had set up a short game within Silent Victory table game - intended to "best" the 5 patrols of real USS Wahoo (SS-238) under command of Lt.Dudley W."Mush" Morton.

I am using self-made excel sheets for the game, as it wont do to push counters around at workplace :D

This is how my "recreated" Patrol Log appears at the start:

Patrols are based according to the Parameters given on Commander Card available in game:

Dudley W."Mush" Morton, Lt.Commander, Navy Cross (4), Purple Heart
Start: Jan 1943, Australia
Aggressive - must always attack any contacts. Must always initiate an additional round of combat against non-sunk, unescorted targets.
May attack at close range with a detection roll of 12
Ship: USS Wahoo (Gato class)

Patrols:

1) Marianas (rebase, end in PH)
2) China Sea
3) Empire
4) Empire
5) Empire

19 ships sunk
54,683 tons

This represent my "recreated" Ship Mat for Argonaut Class submarine within excel (For Gato I had another one):

I am also playing with all the additional rules like Single Escort, Variable Escort/Aircraft Quality, Evasive Maneuvers, etc. plus a few logical adjustments (e.g. Warship like DD is always considered to be under escort - but when sunk on a first salvo, it is hardly possible to be counterattacked by it... :)

I used a little imagination and creativity to transpose Dice Rolls into actual results for a written log during the patrols. All times are meant to be local - thus around 06:00 is morning, 12:00 is midday and around 20:00 is dawn. And so "Mush" shove off for his first patrol in command of USS Wahoo (SS-238):

16th January 1943
Patrol orders arrived and the boat slipped its mooring lines. Patrol area: Marianas.
Each patrol starts and ends (unless sunk) by some time spent on transit - for transit there are chances of some encouter, but they are small. So it is in this case, not a ship or plane were encountered in passage through the Solomons and Marshalls. Skipper decided to patrol along the Truk-Guam route and his decision brought fruit on the third day.

28th January 1943:
14:12 Smoke sighted on a horizon, set course to intercept.
15:43 Target identified as xAK Tainan Maru of 2000 tons with single Escort of 1200 tons, continued tracking target.
16:58 Started submerged approach for attack.
18:25 Fwd Tubes 1+2 fired against merchant ship, Fwd tubes 3+4 fired against escort at close range (700yds).
18:26 First torpedo missed the merchant forward, Second torpedo exploded aft, Merchant ship stopped. Third torpedo missed the Escort ship forward, Fourth torpedo exploded under the stack, Escort sinking.
18:32 Escort Sunk, Merchant ships still stopped, commenced torpedo tube reload.
18:45 Rigged for Gun Action, Surface.
18:54 Fire checked after firing 24 rounds.
18:58 Merchant ship slipped under the waves.

Shifting Patrol area to Guam-Saipan and Japan-Guam route.

19:26 Radar Contact bearing 177, distance 15k yards, intercept course set
21:13 Contact identified as Cargo ship Boko Maru of 2800 tons with two escorts
21:18 Decided to try to take out escorts first. Submerged approach initiated
22:14 Firing position attained. Fired 3x torpedoes out of forward Starboard tubes against closer escort.
22:16 All three torpedoes missed.
22:18 Escort not reacting, probably didn't spot torpedoes. Reloading forward tubes.
22:56 Surfaced, initiating end around.

4th December 1943
06:12 Submerged in position to reengage
07:23 Fired three torpedoes from fwd tubes on closer escort
07:25 Missed again! Diving deep, silent running
07:36 Enemy ships churning forward without stopping - still unaware of our presence.
09:55 Surfaced, regained radar contact, end around started. Reloading forward torpedoes.

12:43 Submerged in position to reengage.
13:36 Fired three Mk.18 (Electric) torpedoes on the Cargo ship.
13:39 First torpedo missed forward of the target. Torpedoes 2 and 3 hit the target with ugly "THUD" sound. Target continue to sail unscathed. Escorts didn't notice a thing.

15:01 Surfaced, initiated end-around again, reloading forward tubes with two last Mk.14 and one Mk.18 torpedo. Tubes aft have 4 Mk.14 loaded.

21:43 Attained position to reengage. This time going in on the surface!
22:34 Firing Mk.18 forward against Cargo ship, 2 Mk.14 forward against distant escort, turning boat to fire aft tubes.
22:35 Firing 4 Mk.14 against close escort.
22:36 Distant Escort obliterated by hit aft, many secondary explosions followed - probably depth charges exploding.
22:36 Close escort hit by torpedo forward, but remains in action.
22:38 Cargo ship damaged by Mk.18 hit amidship. Not sinking.
22:40 Running away at emergency, but the closer escort (damaged) turned to help their fellows.
23:36 Out of torpedoes, continuing to shadow the damaged enemy cargo ship. Escort still around.

5th December 1943
06:32 Still shadowing the damaged cargo ship accompanied by Escort. Radioed position to other subs to finish the cripple.
09:40 No subs nearby to finish off the cripple, Ordered return to base. Broke contact with the enemy.

Thus compared to the real "Mush" Morton I did manage similar results - 1 less ship sunk, 6800 tons more. Moreover I did manage to return to ride a deck job!

I have a feeling that some things would get a little better feeling, like in 5 patrols I had not seen an aircraft, convoys/ships are too easy to follow with SJ radar, Encounters with minefields and warships are rare to the extreme (in the first place it helps player survive, in the second you better get really lucky with dice rolls if capital ship crosses your bow). Also Wolfpack modifiers are too rare especially considering they apply only for Convoy encounters that are rare in itself.

Yet I can tell that in about 10-12 campaign games (raging 12/42 Perch/Tambor/Gar starts to finish with Gato/Balao boats) the feeling is pretty right. Once I had sunk myself by circular run, once by minefield and once by escorts. But most successful campaigns ended with 80-130 000 tons of tonnage sunk. I had seen a total of one CVE, one BB and few smaller ships (getting almost sunk by enemy sub was no fun at all!)
