The finances I can devote to computer games have always been limited, and so I tend to buy older games that I can get at a discount. Which is why I am coming to you today having never (yet) played this game that was released a number of years ago. I'm a life-long wargamer and history buff who's always had a fascination with the Civil War. Enough so that when I was younger and healthier, it was not unusual to find me marching around with a musket on a hot summer weekend, covered in sweat under my wool uniform! Beside my computer stand two book-shelves, one filled with games, the other with books on military history, three quarters of which are about the American Civil War. Its one of those situations where the shelves are all bowed in the middle, and you gotta wonder how long they'll hold out. At some point a year or two ago, a grognard buddy of mine and myself were looking for a computer game we could play multiplayer while he was posted overseas. I had two major criteria: historical authenticity, and a game that allowed you to control both strategic and tactical level operations. Its kind of amazing how hard it is to find that last combination in the same game! There are some very detailed Strategic Games out there, and some visually beautiful Tactical Games, but if you want your battles to have a context in a larger campaign or war...those are woefully lacking. So naturally, I was drawn to FoF. Then something came up in my life, and my free-time was utterly consumed. My friend played the game single-player, and gave it good reviews, but for me it was like that book you say you're going to read someday and just never get around to. Which brings us full circle. The same friend wants to play a Civil War game again. I reminded him of FoF, and dusted off my copy. His computer has since crashed, and he's not sure what he did with his copy of the game, so he's considering buying it again or downloading it. I told him (wisely it turns out) to let me make sure I could play it first. First thing I did was downloaded the patches. When I try to start a game, there is initially music, but a black screen. Eventually, I do see the quote from Lincoln, but there is a choppy quality to the music, and almost immediately an error box pops up. If I choose the ignore option, the music will resume for about two seconds before I get another similar error. After about a dozen popped up, it crashed to desktop. Here's what I copied down from the first error message: "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Assertion Failed! Program: ...ixGames\Forge of Freedom\Forge of Freedom.exe File: C:\Projects\ACWPlato\Source\tile.cpp Line: 199 Expression: ret = = 0" I know it will be helpful to have info on my computer as well, but I don't know exactly what you need... I have a Dell PC, running Windows Vista Home Premium, with an AMD Phenom 9600 Quad-Core 2.3 GHz Processor, 3327 MB of RAM, a 32 bit operating system, and an NVIDIA GeForce GT 520 graphics card. I appreciate any help you can offer!
