OK, I cant take it. Many of us will have played the XCOM games and totally loved the experience. I have play no other game that had me by the goolies so much. There is a company 'Altar interactive' doing an unoffficial sequel, XCEPT THEY DUMBED IT DOWN. This had the potential to be the modern remake of XCom I dreamed (almost) about but they sold out and made it 'accessable for casual(read thick) gamers'.

This post is to suggest to Matrix they put their awesome game talents to the next XCOM game (remake/sequal/whatever).
I know you have a lot in the works but I would love to see YOU guys handle such classic material and bring it into the year 2003+

Anybody out there who agrees with me please post in here, lets have Matrix do the next XCom, (even in gameplay if you cant purchase the name rights). I feel youse are the ONLY developers on the planet who could do this justice.

So you have played it? Otherwise I wouldn't listen to too many rumours. You don't say what critical part of gameplay they have "dumbed down". Perhaps you have posted on their forums and asked? I'm still positive about the experience except the plot will (as in X-Coms too) not likely be good.

Mac. its a bit too obvious that its going too be very simplified. Eg Many people ask about lack of kneeling or going prone. The only answer hey get is 'we dont feel anybody would use tht feature anyway',or' features such as this are unnecessary...' They dont understand their audience or the 'tactical squad combat genre'.

If there was detail and deep tactical possibility in the game we'd have heard about it by now, they only make excuses as to why the game doesnt need this or that option. The gameplay is going to be very shallow, even compared to XCOM, unnacceptable. The graphics do look tasty, credit for that but Gameplay is what counts and they have sold out BIGTIME in that area. It will be about as deep as Armymen on the playstation.

Sorry to say, and if im wrong ill wear it and apologise but this game is not going to get the average casual gamers dollar$ nor will it please the cult following of XCOM, a game 8 yrs old that they cant equal gameplay depth today.

Save your money Mac, or watch the fan reaction before buying it.

Mac, on the plot issue, I think the XCom plot was good. Prevent the alien invasion from taking over the Earth. The cool bit was you PLAYED the story, not read it inbetween levels. The story was researching new techs, confronting new species, spreading your bases all over the world.....XCom3 brought in corporations and opposing factions, more of a story but LESS enthralling for some reason. I think letting the player know he/she has to save the world and having masses of resources, money and tech to do it his or her way was awesome fun.

I say again, Matrix you guys would make a million if you applied your talents and standards to the XCom universe, it would advertise itself, all you would have to do is tell the fans how deep youd go with it. At the very least if you released a visually updated XCom 1or 2 youd be set, but Ive read Paul Vebbers posts on CL:COI and if XCom got this sort of treatment, WOW!!

I´m personally looking forward bigtime to this, having been a total Xcom junkie back then.

I suppose you guys are talking about Freedom Ridge:The Dreamland chronicles?

I thought that was cancelled,or at least has been delayed umpteen times over the last several years.

There is one other game out there that uses the X-Com engine,i forgot about it until recently, actually it combines two good genres. Its a warhammer 40,000 PC game called Chaos gate.In it you control a group of terran imperial marines.

*edit: I have never tried the game, though it seems a little hard to find.

Actually i think its impossible for anyone to pick up the franchise, even if they wanted to.From the fansites i visited a while back the company that took over microprose, forget their name, will not give up the rights to the game even though theres no plan on making new ones that i know of.Thats why the new game is being dubbed the "spiritual" successor to X-Com.More than likely there are lots of things they can't put in the game then to make it like the old ones, you know those darn copyrights.

Just by reading the forums I am worried about the approach they have. As an example there will be no kneeling or prone. The devs dont feel its necessary. It seems to me all you will do in this game is click around and shoot, thought not required.
Theres NO destructable terrain, there was in XCom. You have LESS tactical options than in XCom.

I was keen as for this too Marc but it seems obvious this will be less TACTICAL then XCom, cmon its 8-9 yrs old! and the thing that drew me in about XCom was its gameplay and depth, and those are the things these devs have paid little attention to.

I will be checking it out every now and then though, just wont buy it unless there is a lot more options we dont know about yet, but i dont think there is.

Maliki, I dont think copyright has much to do with the way the game is turning out. The devs have mentioned throughout the whole development they will make this game 'accessable to casual gamers...' this certainly doesnt mean they are making it a
tactical gem, more a move around, look cool and shoot stuff..
repeat.

Matrix you guys would blow XCom fans away with what you could do with this franchise. I can pray.

Oops! though i do support your suggestion that the game be picked up.I always thought it would've been neat for an intergalatic one to be done. You know have the same kind of strategic screen as in the first one but expand the action to the moon and mars and such.If one could be done using the strategic and tactical interface of the first one while combining the improved terrain damage model of apoc, you know buildings fall down when they lose a floor or their supports, then i would happily shell out good money for it.

Don't mean to be posting so much to the subject but i am a complete junkie of the game:D

But the devs seem to be talking about the game with people which is a positive sign ;). Also they don't want to talk about everything that isn't finalized which is very understandable. It's also they who know more about the game than us at this point.

One has to ask if separate clips for each weapon type would be fun? Since it's not a strategy aimed for hard core crowd I'm sure it wouldn't be considered a must feature (or fun in the first place). I also play such games.

Oh, I never buy anything without a couple reviews from reliable sources. Ok I admit there have been some games but I was never disappointed ;).

But it can never be what some fans would like but that doesn't matter if it's a solid good game. It's too bad I never seem to be able to see Jagged Alliance 2 in the shops.

The plot of the first game was ok. Nothing earth shattering but for the first game there's usually no need because everything feels new. Nothing to write a book about.

Anyway, back to my original question.
Will you guys consider adding an XCom game to your future titles list?
Dont say no straight away, have a meeting and brainstorm what you could do. Theres a lot of money in a good XCom sequel, especiall as I vision how you guys would do it, so how a bout it?

At least maybe start an official forum on it too guage the fan support?

Matrix would have to float some serious loans to buy the liscense
I remember EA games of all people didnt think it was economicly feasible to buy the Mechwarrior frachise from Microprose

Aaaah, X-Com

A tear wells in my eye just thinking about it. I just LOVED this game. I`ve been a big fan of the Gollop brothers since they created lazer squad (1 & 2, the foundation stone of the X-Com series) and Chaos for the humble 8 bit machines (zx spectrum), which they evolved into magic and mayhem.

Oh, and to answer the question, I`m sure Matrix would do an excellent job of such a game.

One final thing, as there seem to be so many fans of this, has anyone tried Lazer squad Nemisis, by the Gollop brothers. An email only game I believe, soon to be redone as a "full" game.

Never took the plunge, but i`m sure its good.

Ahh X-COM nice game for its time, loved it. Just hated trying to end the mission and find that last alien but still a very good game.
