A few months ago I started a full game (scenario 79) of Focus Pacific, but I managed to screw myself by failing to organize the logistics. As a result, my factories ran out of steam just before May 1942

A few days ago, I decided to give it a try again. And that time, I decided to share what happens with you guys, so you can give me some wise advices, be appaled at my incompetence, and have a good laugh at my failings.

Soon to come, the reports about the four first days of the war. I'll try to include screenshots, but it'll mostly be text reports.

The port is hammered, striking the submarines while they are vulnerable both by the carrier planes and the land based planes from Takao (Formose). I know that, in Focus Pacific, the Allied Air Forces is a LOT stronger in the Phillipines, so I diverted most of the Vals from the Kido Butai to strike at Clark Field.

Later in the day, the secondary group of carriers (the Mini Butai) is attacked by planes from Cebu. But I anticipated it, and the Americans loses a lot of their brothers in arms to our fighters (even the A5M4 get a few kills)

That way, these ships will either sink at anchor or be stuck here while our foot soldiers invade the base.

The French base of Kwangchowan is also raided catching a lot of good fighters (and ships, French destroyers are dangerous and valuable targets and the Gauchet is also a juicy prize) on the ground.

MARIANA ISLANDS:

Guam is attacked too, to prepare the terrain for the invasion force sailing towards it. This is going to be a tough nut to crack, the terrain will be a huge boon for the defenders and I will probably need to divert additional forces to get rid of them.

Malaya sees a lot of fighting in the air, and we destroy most of the attacking British and French planes. The various landings (Kota Bharu, Miri in Borneo) are a bit costly but nothing unexpected.

I totally going after the dozens of subs in Manila as they are the biggest threat, through laying of mines and occasionally actually having a torpedo explode when it hits. However, if you attack Pearl harbor why go after the few vessels there which will cause you the least amount of harm, early war US Fleet subs with defective torpedoes? It would be best to put as many old BBs down as possible so their 14-16 inch guns aren't used in the future against your land bases softening them up for invasions. Historically the US submarines weren't a viable threat until late 43 when they finally fixed the multiple problems with their defective torpedoes. By late 43 you will know if the Japanese have a chance to go into 45 or 46. Taking out 2-4 old BBs will help you right away, VPs and more than sinking 4-8 subs at PH.

Seems like this should be fun to watch, but won't you be facing a pretty gimped AI due to how much the mod changes?

You made great points, but personally I prefer to take out the subs, even with the defective torpedoes, because they are an absolute pain to take out when they are at sea, especially for the Japanese who starts with really bad ASW capabilities. For 30 reports of ''Sub reported HIT'' in the combat log, only one of them has a chance to have worked, and as for the naval ASW patrols most of the depth charges will detonate above sub depth.

Battleships, on the other side, are awfully vulnerable to airstrikes, especially our Nell and Betty long range torpedo bombers (even Mavis, if youcan get them some torpedoes). They are such big targets that even a few bombers that makes through fighter and flak defense can cripple or sink them before they can do anything. The only thing I'm really scared of, when it comes to Allied AI Battleships, is my Intel and Naval search teams screwing up and failing to notice them in the open sea...that would allow them to make me regret my decision to strike at Manila.

Also, since I'm fighting the AI I'm not expecting them to do anything really threatening and/or bold, like for example send a super battleship fleet to bombard Tokyo before 1942. In my last game the AI tended to avoid fights and hunker down, at least for the first months, we'll see how it'll behave in this game.

Thank you, I hope you'll enjoy it

Well this mod is actually buffing up both sides of the war. Our progress in Malaya and the P-I will be much slower than in a standard game, as the Allied have an absurd amount of airplanes based there, and more units as well.

On the other hand, the additional Japanese ships and units should allow us to fare better in late 1942 and 1943. I can't promise that I won't get crushed by a stupid mistake on my part though, I'm far from being an expert or even a decent player.

But I'm pretty sure 1944 or 1945, if I managed to keep us going for that long, will be the deadline. Before starting the game, I took a peek at the Allied ''Ship availability'', and we'll get swarmed by an OCEAN of warships, especially an insane amount of CVEs.

WAR PLANS

INDUSTRY: I ordered a few more armament and vehicule factories to be built. I'm going to need a LOT of these to re-equip damaged units very, very soon. But the main effort will be directed at, you guessed it, the aircraft production. My Zero pool is already depleted, and I need a lot more good (or at least decent) planes, especially fighters. The production of Nates is stopped in favor of more Ki-43 IC Oscars, and the Zero factories are to be expanded.

I did not run as wild as I did in my first game, I hope it'll be easier for my economy...

MALAYA: Pretty classic, I'll just grind my way down to Singapore, which will be a pain to take. Any attempt to land at Kuantan or Mersing will probably end up in a slaughter, as Singapore has many Vildebeest and Swordfish squadrons. I discovered that the hard way, the first time I tried this scenario.

BORNEO: I'll try to knock out and take the base of Singkawang as soon as possible. It'll give me a great base to strike at Singapore, DEI and any eventual Allied convoy trying to relieve the Jewel of the British Empire.

P-I: If I go with what I have now, I'll probably still be sieging Manila in March 42. So I immediatly comitted two more infantry Divisions (actually in Japan) to help with the invasions. The sooner I take Manila, Clark Field, Bataan and Cebu, the better.

PORT MORESBY: I'll try to rush and nab Rabaul ASAP, then jump directly to P-M while by-passing Lae and Buna. It'll be risky, we'll be vulnerable to planes from Australia but Port Moresby is worth a lot of points and is a great defensive position, especially when supported from Rabaul.

DEI: It's going to be a painful, painful ride. Many bases have coastal guns defenses, and the Dutch forces are tough. Sorong and Ambon will probably be my priority targets in order to soften up the heavier bases (Batavia, Balikpapan) and to lessen the aerial support said bases would get.

THE REST OF THE PACIFIC OCEAN: I'm not sure what to focus on yet. I'll try to take care of my primary objectives, while keeping an eye out for how the enemy reacts then adapt.

CHINA: Now this is going to be a ''go big or go home'' plan. As soon as Hong Kong falls, I'll start a pincer movement in Southern and Northern China, with superstacks of around 15k / 20k AV.

The Northern Army will be tasked with taking Sian, the HQ of Mao's forces, then encircle the Chinese armies near Kaifeng, while paras will take the last base linking Noth China with Chunking.

Meanwhile, in the South, forces from Thailand will land at Pakhoi then march to Kwangchowan. Once the French base is cleared they will take Nanning to end any Allied presence in Southern China. The vainquishers of Hong Kong will march North, taking Wuchow and any Chinese base on the way before joining up with the ''Pakhoi Force''. Then they will march to Chunking.

Even if they can't take Chunking they will cut off the supply lines from the Chinese ''capital'' to the rest of the country. Starved and out of ammo, the Chinese soldiers will soon crumble against our determined soldiers.

NOTE: As I am a fairly new player with much, much to learn, I'll welcome any kind of advice with open arms. But do not be surprised if the AAR ends up in miserable failure after I f*** up something despite advices. With that, I hope you'll enjoy it!...or at least not be too depressed by my lack of skill.

P-I:

Today is a brutal day in the skies. I ordered my bombers for now, while the fighters clear the skies for them. Skyrockets are dangerous foes, even for the A6M2 and can slaughter bombers. We must shoot down a many of them as possible.

Despite some losses, the day is clearly ours as dozens of American flyboys are shot down. I also make a costly mistake by ordering a raid on Davao's port by some planes of the Mini Butai. An AVD isn't worth several carrier pilots and planes.

SOUTHERN CHINA:

This front has been a complete success today. We hammered the French base with the force of a great typhoon and unleashed raging fire on them and their planes. I think we can consider Kwangchowan's airfield to be shut down, not a single French airplane was seen in the air today. Also these were some great hits on the DD's in port. I'm only showing the most important raids of the day, there was around a dozen of them, causing varied amount of damage and I admit I was surprised by how effective the Idas were.

Still relatively quiet on the ground. In both theaters our land forces and ships are brillantly protected by our fighters, downing a good amount of Chinese and British planes who attempted a multitude of small raids. Great progress was made today. I'm sorry about the lack of screenshots, when I decided to make this an AAR I was alread the 12/12/1941, also my CPU has a weird thing with screenshots that can make it bug or even crash. I'll try to take one at every turn's end, and from time to time take a ''situation assessment'' screenshot to show you the losses and the score.

You should check to see what the KB air groups were set for would be interested in what resulted in the Clark AFB attack order.

BREAKING NEWS! Apparently, some of the K-B's squadrons were set to ''airfield attack'' as their secondry mission. So it's my own damn fault for yesterday's strike on Clark Field, huh. Mytery solved!

P-I:

The Americans sends two destroyers, probably from Manila, to disrupt our amphibious Task Forces bound for Vigan and Aparri. Luckily, they miss the first and run into the second's escort. The Peary is immediatly sunk by a torpedo from DD Nagatsuki, and the Pillsbury is engaged several times that time. She's damaged, but not sunk, we'll sink her later.

The first ground attack is, as I expected, painful. The Canadians are tough, and I don't think any of the defender is going down without a fight. But, despite the scary numbers, we actually came out on top of this fight. The defenders lost most of their fortifications, the majority of our losses are disabled squads, and the enemy suffered more destroyed squads than us. We need to keep the pressure, before this turns into a looooong fight.

Singkawang is plastered by a task force of heavy ships, flagged by the Yamato. This will make the planes based here useless and soften up the base for the soon to happen invasion.

SUB WARFARE:

For those who don't know, Focus Pacific also gives Japan a bunch of German ships and submarines. Here we can see a U-boat wasting a big tanker next to Ceylon. Nice to have you with us, friends!

Basically the same that happened since the beginning of the war. We lose some planes, they lose a bunch of planes, and because of the bad weather our bombers do not take off to capitalize on our enemies' weakness. Grr. We do sink the AS Canopus, AP President Madison and the AO Otus, thanks to the K-B.

Also more costly attacks on our carriers by US planes, and our troops from Babeldaob have landed in Legaspi.

But soon, I hear bad news that instantly ruins my mood: at least one carrier has been spotted by my patrol aircraft, near Wake Island. I'm glad I cancelled the invasion force bound for this base (I know trying to take it without bombarding it is pretty much impossible), but now I've got a problem. There is a dragon prowling next to the Marianas, and Kwajelein is actually stacked with warships I sent there to form raider task forces. We'll have to see, hopefully it'll go back to Pearl or whatever allied base. But if it stats going south...this could be bad.

A flight of Nells from Roi-Namur attack Wake, as I forgot to tell them to stand down. Every single fighter of the island is there to intercept them...except they don't. For some reason, the only bomber we lose is to Wake's flak. I'm not complaining at all, it's nice to see these things happen to the AI from time to time. Also we did some pretty good damage, too bad we won't be able to capitalize on this.

P-I:

Clark Field is, once more, bombed and it's skies swept of allied fighters. We also use the Kido Butai to strike at Cebu's port, which is harboring several huge APs. I think these used to be cruise liners, now they are very important and very valuable troop transports, and I'll do my best to make sure they do not escape. The Klutina, Chena, Gulkana and Goldstream are probably gone, but the others will certainly need some more help to sink.

A pretty good day, if only this MOTHER******* CARRIER wasn't going to the SOUTH of Wake! this **** decided to start to move down, and if my calculations are correct he will pass through the Marianas from north to south, and will probably bomb Kwajelein on his way.

You know what...no.

I'm not going to sit there while this d-bag have a grand time sinking my navy. I'll muster every warship I can get and sally forth to meet this CV. It's probably going to end horribly, but that's what's going to happen ANYWAY. I'll try to guess his path to cut him off.

Even if we managed to intercept him, he's probably heavily escorted...everything will rest on our sailors' shoulders. May the IJN make us proud, tomorrow.

A few months ago I started a full game (scenario 79) of Focus Pacific, but I managed to screw myself by failing to organize the logistics. As a result, my factories ran out of steam just before May 1942

Iam getting ready to start as Japan. Share with us what were the things you did wrong?

Well, I'm terribly unexperienced, and as i said my last game didn't last long so I am not the best to give advice about what to or not to do, but I'll gladly help as much as I can

First, my biggest mistake was failing to understand the resources system. I thought resources where stocked in the pool and directly used by industry, but the pool only tells you how much resources you have in total, you need to haul them to your industries, or they will very quickly stop working. (The closest and biggest reserves of resources when the game starts are in Sakhalin, Hokkaïdo and the main Korean ports.)

Then I got over-enthusiastic when I saw I could control the aircraft/engine production and air research development. I ordered way too many factories to be built, which sucked my HI pool dry rapidly. Coupled with the first mistake, disaster happened in February 1942.

Also I got intimidated by the strengh of Allied defenses in Focus Pacific, and I played way too defensively, while early on Japan MUST be agressive, no matter if losses are high. I underestimated Manila and Clark Field, got bogged down in Luzon and Malaya, while failing to attack Davao. And while I was standing still, Allied convoys carried supplies, fuel and soldiers from the USA and India right to the bases I failed to grab early on.

I think that's it for now, I'll probably think of more things later

SOUTHERN CHINA:

Here we are doing what we do best on this front: blowing up French planes on the ground. Once we clear it, this base will probably become nothing more than a backwater station, but right now we really need to keep it neutralized.

GUAM:

Our disembarking troops take heavy losses, then a pounding by the island's defenders. This is annoying, but for now we must put up with it. Our soldiers are badly disrupted, an assalut right now would be costly and would probably be ineffective.

I was honestly scared that the Allies would just avoid my surface combat task force then bomb the hell out of it during the day, but things went perfectly well! Today my men offered me a big ass cake, with the Enterprise and the Repulse on top of it. Thank you guys, you are awesome!

A huge success with the Big E[image][/image] TF since it was faster than yours since you had the CL Katori, was an 18 knot training cruiser with only 4 x 5.5 inch guns and 4 21 inch torpedo tubes. he should have been able to show you a clean set of heels and run away, since the attack started at 20,000 yards. I guess you caught him by surprise and sent a spread of torpedoes before he could react hitting the Big E twice and crippling her as her escorts fought to protect the crippled carrier.

Yeah, I think I got a ''Allied Naval Force is surprised!'' when my men creeped up on them after spotting their TF. Thank god for IJN skill at night battles

Or maybe the enemy TF commander got cocky and thought his two CAs would be enough to protect the Enterprise. If that's the case, I know someone who's going to spend the rest of the war in some abandoned in the US desert, commanding a TF of drowned rats in a bucket of piss.

To maximise my chance I ordered my task force to patrol between Kwajelein and...Rongelap, if I remember correctly, right in the enemy's supposed path according to the infos on the strategic map. That's probably why my TF didn't pursue the remaining US ships after the battle despite having a ''reaction range'', they were out of movement points/ops points, I think.
