Great result!! The skippers of the Brit DEs deserve VCs. The smaller TFs ran the IJN short of ammo is my guess...on top of the lucky DE torpedo hits.

PP—

I agree, they both fought valiantly.

It was unfortunate that the Charleston and other PG/PCs got caught up when returning to port from ASW patrols.

Question: Would giving "Safest" orders for the route home helped in possibly preventing that happenstance from occurring?

Good to hear from you,

Hag

EDIT 8/27: Yes, PP—I finally get your point! The Jap bombardment was doubtless unsuccessful because of the small TFs engaging it! Recommending Navy Crosses for those gentlemen as well!

pontiouspilot-

It is always a welcome sight to watch a Japanese Capital Ship sink below the waves.

However, El Lobo made the Allies pay a heavy price to sink BB Hyuga.

Presently, my primary goals at the Southern Marianas Islands are as follows:

1.) Safely complete the loading of transports for Operations Bottle and Cork.

2.) Prevent the Japanese from bombarding the airfields and destroying hundreds of aircraft.

Best Regards,

-Terry

Operations Bottle & Cork

Marianas Islands

as of September 10, 1943

Loading

By the end of the day on September 10, 1943, Operations Bottle and Cork are anticipated to fully complete the loading of ground forces, aircraft, and supply on transport ships bound for Takao, Formosa and Pescadores.

Staging Area

By the end of the day on September 11, 1943, the entire Invasion Fleet for Operations Bottle and Cork are anticipated to be at hex 107, 94 (one hex due west of Tinian).

Distance and Time

The distance from the Staging Area to hex 83,63 (one hex due west of Pescadores) is 1,640 miles.

All of the Task Forces of the Invasion Fleet will move together as one group at the speed of 5 knots (slowed down by Mine Tender Task Forces).

On September 20, 1943, it is anticipated that the Invasion Fleet will arrive at hex 83,63 (one hex due west of Pescadores).

The Route

On September 12, 1943, it is anticipated that the Invasion Fleet will leave the Staging Area (one hex due west of Tinian).

The Invasion Fleet will move directly northwest (diagonally) to hex 94,68 (two hexes southwest of Naha, Okinawa) to give El Lobo the impression that the Invasion Fleet’s destination is Okinawa.

Upon reaching hex 94,68 (two hexes southwest of Naha, Okinawa), the Invasion Fleet will turn due west passing directly under Orchid Island and Hengchen to hex 84,68 (one hex southwest of Hengchen).

Upon reaching hex 84,68 (one hex southwest of Hengchen), the Invasion Fleet will turn northwest to hex 83,63 (one hex due west of Pescadores).

Invasion

On September 21, 1942, it is anticipated that ground forces and supply will simultaneously and amphibiously land at Takao, Formosa and Pescadores.

However, in the event that Allied recon of Takao and Pescadores indicate that those two bases are lightly defended by the Japanese, though the Marines are 100% fully-prepped for Pescadores and though U.S. Army troops are 100% fully-prepped for Takao, the Marines will proceed to invade Amoy, China while the U.S. Army splits its forces to invade both Takao and Pescadores.

Conclusion

Should my time permit, at some point during the Invasion Fleet’s route toward hex 83,63 (one hex due west of Pescadores), I will provide the Order of Battle for all Invasion Fleet Task Forces and the Order of Battle for the ground forces, aircraft, and supply anticipated to land at Takao, Pescadores, and possibly Amoy, China.

A map of the Marianas Islands lit-up like Christmas on September 10, 1943 is displayed below.

Best Regards,

-Terry

Rusty-

El Lobo phoned me from Thailand last night.

A few days ago, he rescued a little Chihuahua that was hit by a car. El Lobo and his wife took the little dog to the vet and they were worried that the dog's leg would need to be amputated. As it turns out, it now appears that perhaps only the dog's foot will need to be amputated. El Lobo advised that he has three updates with maps to post on his AAR, but that he has been giving the little dog he named Pow Wow plenty of attention and love and hasn't had the time to post his updates.

Best Regards,

-Terry

Gentlemen—

Unless someone slaps me out of it, I set sail this morning 7 Port Attack SS TFs... they are going to enter Takao, Kai-whatever the other Formosan port is, Pescadores, Amoy, Swatow, Tsinkiang & Chaochow—two days before the TFG enters the invasion hex—and blow up whatever they can.

You are likely to find mines the hard way in at least four of those ports. If you are willing to take that risk for a chance at torpedoing a ship or two, that's OK too. Sometimes subs can survive one mine hit and once detected, a minefield is less likely to affect more of your ships or subs.

BB—

I count your assessment as a nice backhand across the chops... Thanks, mate! I'm feeling much better now!

So... are these mined ports intrinsic to the game?

Because... while it's true El has recently been laying mines in ports he perceives are imminently threatened, it hasn't been his M.O. to prepare a deep-defense, mine-wise.

For example, we just witnessed him laying mines in the Bonins and the Northern Marianas within the last few weeks, after the TFG arrived off Rota.

Given that what we believe—that he does not suspect invasions at Formosa, Pescadores, and the coast of China—is it likely he'd have planted mines at those locales?

Still... I shall ponder upon this for the next four days... it's not worth risking subs to nail a few backwater rust-buckets... and it will be a long way back to Guam.

News Alert

Admiral Rio Bravo Has Been Relieved of His Command

September 11, 1943

Gentlemen of The War College-

Unfortunately, I regret having to advise you that Admiral Rio Bravo has been relieved of all duties for erroneously colluding with the enemy through a dispatch sent on September 11, 1943.

Please enjoy having a good laugh and some fun at the Dumb Ass Admiral's mistake while reading the following (i.e., Rio's Email sent to El Lobo versus Captain Haggard on August 26, 2017):

Captain Haggard-

The title "Important" hits me as rather lame considering Deborah's passing only four days ago.

CHARGE (Bugles blaring in the background)

1.) We leave OWT bound for OWP tomorrow; September 12, 1943.

2.) The entire Invasion Fleet presently at OWT has been refueled from the Replenishment Task Force within the hex; including all your Task Forces within the hex.

3.) All Combat Ship Task Forces presently at OWT are fully armed.

4.) I set all your Mine Sweeping Task Forces to follow the Invasion Fleet's lead Task Force; TF 17.

5.) All Task Forces presently at one or the other four southern Marianas Ports have loaded and are set to meet the Invasion Fleet at OWT. They should all arrive by day-end on September 11, 1943.

6.) Please check all the Task Forces under The Haggard Group to assure that I have not set any of your Task Forces to head west that you do not want heading west and to assure that all of your Task Forces you want heading west are indeed set to follow TF 17.

DESTRYOER TENDERS (AVDs) PRESENTLY AT OWT

These AVDS were at OER as you sent them there, I assume to be protected by the Invasion Fleet. Accordingly, when I moved the Invasion Fleet to OWT, I set the AVDs to follow so they would still remain under the protection of the Invasion Fleet. I have now set them to return to Guam. They are your ships, if you want them elsewhere, so order them elsewhere.

AUTOMATIC SUBMARINE WITHDRAWALS

Are you keeping an eyes on the dates your submarines are scheduled to automatically withdraw so that we don't lose any Political Points for late withdrawals?

ADEN SUPPLY TF 690

At Aden, baby xAKs are presently loading supply that will go to Bombay, then Calcutta, then to Rangoon to unload, and then to Calcutta. We have xAKS at Calcutta presently loading their second shipment of supply for Rangoon. But, I want more supply ships running between Calcutta and Rangoon to get more supply to Rangoon faster. Accordingly, the bay xAKs will help achieve that goal. The baby xAKs need an escort. Find one of your ships and plan to meet the baby xAKs to escort them from Bombay to Calcutta and on to Rangoon. Your escort ship will remain with the baby xAKs for additional supply shipments to Rangoon.

GUAM SPITFIRES SET TO NIGHT CAP

We will monitor their night-flight experience. If the night-flight experience climbs, we will make sure we have a Spitfire Squadron at each of the four southern Marianas flying Night CAP.

THE HAGGARD GROUP DAMAGED SURFACE COMBAT SHIPS PRESENTLY AT GUAM

I took DE Electra and CLAA Van Heemskerek off Shipyard Repair and transferred them to TF 649 (A Damaged Surface Combat Ships Task Force) leaving Guam for Pearl Harbor. I wasn't sure if Guam could fully repair your or my damaged Surface Combat ships. Preferring to be safe rather than sorry, TF 649 heads to Pearl. If you do not want your two ships to go to Pearl; turn them around.

PROVIDING AN ORGASM FOR YOU

Although El Lobo's attempt to bombard Guam failed, The Haggard Group lost several Combat Ships. The loss of several of your Surface Combat Ships leaves the Marianas Islands rather vulnerable. Although I believe that El Lobo was spanked hard enough (i.e., sinking one Jap Battleship and heavily damaging another) to discourage him from attempting to bombard our Marianas Island bases, that son of a bitch has proven that he simply can't be trusted not to be a sneaky, low-down, rotten, dirty rat bastard!

Accordingly, should you desire to accept the following transfer of Surface Combat Ships to The Haggard Group, the following Surface Combat Ships will be transferred to your Command effective September 12, 1943 under the following firm condition: These ships are ONLY to be used for the defense of the Allied held Marianas bases and NOT to be used to dash off on an offensive operation (and, at some point these ships will no doubt be transferred back to my command):

BB Maryland (refit date 2/43)

BB Pennsylvania (refit date 6/43)

BB Idaho (refit date 10/43)

CA Chester (refit date 1/44)

CA Louisville (refit date 1/44)

CA Chicago (refit date 1/44)

CL Achilles (refit date 2/45)

CL Raleigh (no refit scheduled)

CL Detroit (no refit scheduled)

CL Concord (no refit scheduled)

DD Ellet (refit date 4/44)

DD Porter (refit date 3/43)

DD Phelps (refit date 8/44)

DD Smith (refit date 10/43)

DD Reid (refit date 10/43)

DD Cassin (refit date 10/43)

All of the above ships are at Guam and undocked.

Hopefully, toward the end of November or early December, a huge Fleet will leave Pearl transporting reinforcement ground forces, supply, fuel, and possibly more aircraft. This Fleet will be accompanied by at least 4 Carriers, a BB, CL, CA, and around 20 or more Fletcher DDs. I am thinking, that perhaps the above ships stay to defend the Marianas Islands until the Fletchers arrive to relieve them of their duty so they can go to Pearl to refit. I think we need to discuss this "refit" matter for these above ships in greater detail.

No, I am not cleaning you up after your mess. You do have an Adjutant!

AIRCRAFT AT THE MARIANAS ISLANDS

Effective September 12, 1943. considering the Invasion Fleet leaves to head west, should you desire to change the present flights of the aircraft at the Marianas Islands to support your defense of the Marianas Islands, you may do so. However, leave the bombers (Liberators and Venturas) and the long-range recon aircraft (PB4Y-1P Liberators) alone as they will be bombing and performing recon the Bonin Islands to give El Lobo a brief impression that the Bonin Islands are where the Invasion fleet is headed.

CONCLUSION

Should any of the above be unclear, which it easily could be as I feel like I am walking around in a fog bank (Felt the same feeling when pa and ma passed), give me a phone call before you issue your orders for September 12, 1943.

I do realize that if El Lobo sends his carriers to fight at the Marianas while our carriers are out west, we may experience some heavy casualties. However, with close to 1,400 aircraft and the Surface Combat ships staying behind, we should be able to spank his butt too. Part of me hopes that he does send his carriers down while our carriers are away because we would then most likely keep the vast majority of our fighting ships in tact while El Lobo's fighting ships take a beating.

Saddle up Hag, we are taking the war to El Lobo's backyard.

Your pal,

-Admiral Bravo

In reference to Deborah's passing at 5:10 p.m. (Burlington, Ontario Time) on the 22nd of August, 2017:

Deborah was my fiancé.

She was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in September of 2010.

For almost seven years, Deborah suffered through numerous chemotherapy treatments and one Cyber-knife radiation treatment to shrink a tumor in her brain as the Ovarian Cancer spread throughout her entire body. Due to the cancer, numerous chemotherapy treatments, and the Cyber-knife treatment, her immune system was seriously compromised. Her health gradually deteriorated and the horrible pain, physical disabilities, and sense of hopelessness progressively increased through the battle years of her illness.

Through it all, Deborah kept that unique Canadian sense of humor and at times though her courage briefly dampened, she fought this nightmare with dignity and grace to the bitter end.

I strongly encourage each of you to advise any woman that you care about, for that matter any woman you know, to annually have a 125A Test. Presently, it is the ONLY test (though not 100% foolproof) that can provide an early hint of Ovarian Cancer. It is a simple blood test. If this type of cancer is diagnosed in Stage One, there is an excellent chance that it can be zapped before the cancer has a chance to spread. If not diagnosed early, which the vast, vast majority of cases are not, there is presently no cure and it is an excruciating, horrible illness for any woman to have to experience. Please take my advice seriously. I am not crying wolf nor am I ill informed. It is far better to be safe than agonizingly sorry.

As others that were close to me and passed away, I will sorely miss Deborah. But, I will never miss the memory of her smile as it will remain my saddle pal till the day I leave this life for adventures unknown.

Sincerely,

-Terry

I am certain Takao, Pescadores, and Taihoku have mines at start, and Amoy is a maybe in that group. The other three you listed are less developed ports so it is unlikely that the limited pool of mines would be used there.

Rio - your letter re: Deborah's passing was extremely moving and must have been heartfelt. I was aware she was terminally ill and was suffering greatly, but thought she had passed some time ago. The only thing worse than dying is dying slowly in great pain. I am glad she brought joy to your life and memories -when it comes down to it that is the best any of us can ever do for the world. I'll have a sip of wine to her memory tonight.

BBfanboy-

I appreciate your kind words.

Thank you.

Best Regards,

-Terry

Highlight for Today

The Operations Bottle and Cork Invasion Fleet moving at 5 knots is 160 miles northwest of Guam.

Synopsis of Combat Action for Today

The lone leatherneck trudged into Chungking knee-deep in ash. Now and then he sunk to his neck as his route took him over one bomb crater after the other. He was exhausted. The hike from just east of Hong Kong where Captain Haggard's submarine had dropped him off had been a grueling trek. He had managed to avoid more Japanese troops than that gal he had banged on Guam had crabs. He muttered again, "Damn Sailors;"..as he had numerous times blaming the Harbor Ducks for having infested the hookers. He heard the bombers before he spotted them, but looking up toward the south, there they were; dozens of them. Gunny Wallace, dispatched from the First Marine Division to deliver a dispatch, frantically raced his eyes around three hundred and sixty degrees seeking shelter. Nothing but a sea of ash. He resigned himself to simply raise his palms, press his hands tightly over his ears, and open his mouth. He kept his eyes open. He wanted to see this and he wasn't disappointed. The ground trembled under his tattered boots as the earth for miles erupted in rather spectacular, colorful flames. The Japanese bombing of Chungking, went on, and on, and on, and on until he became quite bored with the spectacle. Wave after wave after wave of Red Suns unloaded on Chungking like his wife had unloaded on him that time she found him drunk and sprawled in the gutter at the Corner of 5th and Vermouth just outside the gate in Oceanside, California. He had barked, "Private you are married to a Marine. Stand down and get me a beer!" Of course she didn't. His eyes began to burn and he coughed as clouds of smoke drifted to block that other Red Sun, the big one way up, higher than those baby Red Suns that had deafened his ears. Out of the smoke appeared what no one would recognize as a Chinese soldier. He was as thin as a woman's patience when she wants something done and she wants it done now. Like the time in Philly a particular Filly had grown weary of waiting for him to divorce his wife when he was a recruiter but wasn't doing too well being recruited to her nest on a permanent basis. From his hip hung a sling-shot and his ripped dungarees brimmed with protruding rocks, rocks about the same size one would sling from a sling-shot. He spoke Chinese which didn't surprise the Gunny. He chuckled, and managed to assimilate enough rapid arm movements to realize that he was to follow the hyper soldier somewhere. The two of them arrived at what the Gunny supposed use to be a tent. There were several Chinese soldiers milling about, shoveling ash into buckets and fanning smoke away from a hollowed jaw man with a scowl on his face large enough to shade half the state of Arizona. He spoke, "I speak English." The gunny sort of saluted, but not really. He spoke in a crisp voice, "Relax, Jarheads are in route to Amoy."

A cautionary approach. We feared the oarsman might get fatigued.

Gentlemen—

Here's a curious thing: I attached my MS TFs to the TFG's lead TF and the TFG traveled 0 hexes yesterday. No ship damages, everything else seemingly fine.

Is it something to do with MS TFs?

Maybe next time I'll make them "Surface Combat" and then switch missions at the target?

Color me wa-ay stumped, aka "normal".

Hag

Wishing all a great Labor Day weekend!

If you have multiple daisy-chained follow orders the AI tends to get confused and does nothing. I think the AI tries to move TFs in numerical sequence but if the follow orders are not matching it gets stuck in a circular logic. NEVER have more than one leading TF with all the other following it.
